Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track… So we’re going to do the hard work for you.
This week we head down under to Australia, where Paramount+ original Last King of the Cross has been making a serious racket. Telling the true story of gang warfare in the notorious Sydney Kings Cross district, the 10-part crime thriller harks back to classics such as The Godfather. Its journey to screen has been a lengthy but enjoyable one, say producers.

Whilst the era of straight to video B-movie action may be a distant memory, the spirit lives on in independent productions that can be considered labors of love in their efforts to get completed. “Echo 8”, an Australian based martial arts/action piece put together with a micro budget during a nationwide pandemic, is one such example.. In such circumstances a tremendous achievement. The concept of an assassin regaining memories and their own conscience is a fertile one and has been a popular mainstay of action cinema across the decades. How then does this effort compare?
Echo 8 (Maria Tran) and Delta 1 (David Vuong) are assassins under the watch of Agenda 5 (Takeshi Hara). Deemed to be the most efficient of the Zodiac organizations teams, they are assigned one job after another unit messes up a straightforward hit. The target is Hanh (Gabrielle Chan) a mother who is pressuring the local authorities to reopen 216 cold cases.

Exclusive: Tim Roth is replacing Ian McShane in Paramount+’s buzzy Australian drama series Last King of the Cross.
Roth takes on the role of antagonist Ezra Shipman in the Helium Pictures-produced serialized crime drama after McShane withdrew due to health concerns.
McShane was originally cast as Shipman in late March. He is also set to reprise his role opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 4. Deadline has reached out to his reps.
The show’s producer/executive producer and Helium founder Mark Fennessy said: “It’s unfortunate that Ian is unable to join us and we wish him a speedy recovery. Exclusive: Paramount+ Australia drama Last King of the Cross has added more cast with the likes of 300: Rise of an Empire’s Callan Mulvey joining previously-announced Ian McShane and Lincoln Younes.
Tess Haubrich (Spiderhead, Alien: Covenant), Claude Jabbour, Maria Tran (Truy Sat, Echo 8), Matt Nable (Riddick, Bikie Wars: Brothers In Arms) and Damian Walshe-Howling have also boarded the 10-parter, which represents one of Paramount+’s biggest international bets as it expands non-u.S. footprint.

Who says the world of martial arts cinema needs to be a boys club? Certainly not Australian filmmaker Maria Tran, who is very much aware that while the Jet Lis and Jackie Chans of the world have historically claimed most of the limelight, standing right behind them - and often kicking their asses - are a host of talented female performers. And she's bringing them front and center with her new documentary project, Femme Fatales, which is launching in to its production cycle now. For the past decade of her life, Fairfield-based filmmaker Maria Tran has devoted her life in making Hong Kong cinema homage action films in her backyard. Tiger Cop is a fine example of the classic 1980’s Chinese Martial Art genre. If you are fans of Yukari Oshima, Moon Lee and Cynthia Rothrock then this right up your street. Tiger Cop is two sets of extravagant trailers which pays homage to them movies and stars which brought us hard-hitting fight scenes over the years.
Maria Tran plays the new inspector on the force and right away she gets into trouble when introduced to her new partner. It’s a very well choreographed fight scene showcasing Maria’s hand to hand combat, the art of blocking and some very nice kicks. Maria really mixes it up, when watching the fights it takes me back to watching movies such as Angels, Outlaw brothers, Yes Madam and more.
