It has been well establish that superhero films have basically become their own genre. Their popularity and sheer volume has placed them into their own unique category. We are also beginning to see subcategories emerge within superhero films that twist and turn the typical format we have come to expect. The film All Superheroes Must Die is one of the newest examples of this phenomenon. It takes the archetypal heroes we recognize and places them into dark and perverse world we would normally associate with a horror film. That juxtaposition of genre is clever premise which could provide a much needed boost to a genre that can easily become stale. Regrettably the final product does not live up to the promise of that potential. Being a small...

If you look at my bio here at Jpp, you'll notice that it says I’m a bit a Watchmen fanatic. Watchmen has colored my appreciation of the superhero genre forever. I can't stomach reading weekly/monthly DC or Marvel hero entries any more. I want my heroes darker, edgier, slightly more "real." I pretty much worship The Comedian, after all. It's that dark edge that keeps me coming back to my favorite comics and makes me seek out newer stuff like Fly, Deathmatch and Before Watchmen. Also known as Vs., All Superheroes Must Die stars Jason Trost as Charge. When he awakens on a lonely street in the middle of what appears to be a small town, he discovers that he's trapped in a game of survival alongside fellow heroes CutThroat (Lucas Till), Shadow (Sophie Merkley) and The Wall (Lee Valmassey) against Rickshaw (James Remar).

What makes a superhero super? Is it their moral character, or their fantastic powers that allow them to vanquish all villains? What if their powers were lost and the very reason for their existence was suddenly drained from them? All Superheroes Must Die is now out on Blu-ray and DVD, from Image Entertainment, and in honor of the release, Wamg decided to take a look at the other side of superheroes… the not so damsel in distress.
While there are plenty of innocent hostages, Sophie Merkley as Shadow isn’t one of them. Merkley joins the impressive company of strong women that includes Scarlett Johansson (Marvel’s The Avengers), Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) and Sigourney Weaver (Alien). I’ve been following All Superheroes Must Die ever since it was originally being marketed as Vs, so you can say I’ve been anticipating B-Movie specialist Jason Trost’s Saw/superhero hybrid for an awful long time. Why? Because ever since I saw Trost’s short The Fp, which eventually spawned the feature film I absolutely fell in love with, I just couldn’t ignore anything this guy was working on. I mean, he wears an eye-patch and won’t tell anyone why. How are you not following his every move?!
Hearing about the abstract concept of All Superheroes Must Die, I was immediately hooked from the start, and I wasn’t kidding about the whole Saw aspect either. Four superheroes wake up in different parts of a generic town, only to find their arch enemy Rickshaw (James Remar) has scattered innocent civilians around the town who need saving.

I have heard this called “Kick-Ass meets Saw” but I really hope this film as little of Kick-Ass as possible. More Defendor and Boy Wonder please. I wonder is one of the heros in this film will try to fight real criminals and get stabbed like Kick-Ass.
The film is set to premiere at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival on Wednesday Oct 26th 2011 at 9.45pm.
Vs also stars Sophie Merkley and Lee Valmassy.

[1] The superhero-supervillain showdown is a staple of any costumed-hero flick, but writer/director Jason Trost's indie thriller Vs takes it to a whole new level by expanding that central conflict and mixing in an element of horror. Described as "Kick-Ass meets Saw," Vs revolves around a quartet of young superheroes who are forced by their archnemesis Rickshaw (James Remar) to pass a series of deadly tests, lest he destroy the 100 innocent civilians he's kidnapped. Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), Sean Whalen, Nick Principe, Sophie Merkley, and Trost also star. Watch the trailer after the jump. [via First Showing [2]] Maybe it's because I've never been into the Saw films to begin with, so the premise doesn't automatically rouse my interest, but this trailer just leaves me cold. The villain isn't especially engaging, the heroes even less so, and there isn't enough action, violence, or gore to draw me in on that level. It's...

"You can't save everybody, man." Time for some indie wackiness in the form of a trailer for a film titled Vs, mashing up Kick Ass (or Super) and Saw, plus an evil Uncle Sam with a flamethrower, for some weird dark, superhero drama. Lucas Till (from X-Men: First Class) stars as "Cutthroat", who gets captured and forced to save innocent civilians in some villain's twisted game. James Remar also stars as Rickshaw, along with Sean Whalen, Nick Principe, Sophie Merkley, Jason Trost. I honestly can't say it looks good, but intriguing at the least. It's premiering at the Toronto After Dark Fest and AICN debuted this new trailer and a poster. Watch the first teaser trailer for Jason Trost's Vs (Versus), from YouTube (via AICN): A terrifically dark and twisted tale about four superheroes abducted by their arch-nemesis and forced to compete in a series of challenges in...
