With only two films in James Cameron’s Avatar series since 2009, it is challenging to imagine the existence of five installments by 2031, let alone two more movies later. That’s right, folks. I said two more movies! According to James Cameron, he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but there’s a twist. Instead of dedicating the remainder of his mortality to the effects-driven, money-printing franchise, he could pass the torch to another filmmaker.
Speaking with Collider about the Avatar franchise’s future, Cameron said, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Filmmaker James Cameron confirmed that he and actress Kate Winslet are working together again on ‘Avatar 3’. James had said the project’s post production schedule was “hectic”, but the film is due out “Christmas of ’25”, reports deadline.
James said in an interview with People that Kate will once again play Ronal.
While Kate’s involvement in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ was relatively minimal, it sounds like she will have more to do in the third film.
The director said Kate “went to school” with a real-life shaman to learn more about she will employ in the 2025 release.
“When you see her doing that purification ritual to try to revive Kitty in the film and some of the stuff that she’s going to do in movie three, that’s based on actual practice,” he said.

Shortly after the release of the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora video game, James Cameron is sharing more details about Avatar 4. Before spilling the beans about the fourth film, Cameron wants fans to know Avatar 3 is “right on track” for its December 19, 2025 release in theaters.
“We did the capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [Avatar: The Way of Water], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four,” Cameron told People.
Meanwhile, wheels are in motion for Avatar 4, which Cameron says includes a six-year time jump (presumably after the events of Avatar 3). “We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back,” Cameron says about the 2029 release. “And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is out on digital. Perhaps you've heard of it? The long-awaited sequel to 2009's "Avatar" by James Cameron made almost $2.5 billion at the box office. It continues the story of the Sully family as they hide out from the humans of the Rda, who have returned to Pandora after years away. The family finds sanctuary with the Metkayina, a water-based group of Na'vi who have developed physical adaptations for swimming.
You may have heard the stories on-set of the actors holding their breath underwater, aka freediving, for a very long time. This includes Kate Winslet — who played Ronal, one of the Metkayina — holding her breath for a whopping seven minutes and 15 seconds. In fact, all the swimming scenes were done "wet for wet," meaning that they were all shot underwater. That meant the actors had to learn to swim under the surface for a long time without scuba gear,...

Who would have guessed that The Joe Schmo Show, a series that aired three seasons on the since-renamed Spike network scattered between 2003 and 2013, would be TV’s most influential format of 2022 and 2023? Other than fans of The Joe Schmo Show, I mean.
That series, in which an ordinary civilian — a “Joe Schmo,” if you will — is pranked/hoaxed/conned/scammed into believing he was part of a reality show when he was actually surrounded by a crew of actors, has its potent DNA in Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal, one of my favorite shows of last year, and Peacock’s Paul T. Goldman, a provocatively noxious offering from earlier this winter. Now it’s back again in Freevee’s Jury Duty.

Los Angeles, March 25 (Ians) Hollywood actress Kate Winslet and her ‘Titanic’ director James Cameron re-teamed for ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.
In a clip from the featurette ‘New Characters of Pandora’ – available on the digital release – Winslet discussed returning to the water, how she really didn’t have a choice about taking the part of Ronal, and how she helped shape the character.
When Winslet told her kids that Cameron had sent her the Avatar script, they didn’t give her much of a choice about taking the part. But the “added water element” might have really sealed the deal for her, reports ‘Entertainment Weekly’.
“I am a water person,” Winslet said, “All ‘Titanic’ jokes aside”. ‘The New Characters of Pandora’ featurette introduces important new characters in the Avatar saga played by Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, and Jemaine Clement.

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” from its upcoming digital release, the film’s cast and crew reveal the multiple innovative methods they deployed to shoot the film, as the production team quite literally learned how to work vis-à-vis the way of water.
Going from land to water was a big adjustment for the cast. Stars Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington and Kate Winslet discuss having to learn to regulate their bodies and breathing within this unfamiliar layer of the set so they could properly capture the essence of Cameron’s vision.

The dramatic, and partly fictional retelling of the sinking of the Titanic - which took place early in the morning on April 15th, 1912 - has a warm place in the hearts of audiences around the world. The film is directed by James Cameron, known for his emotional, yet gorgeously cinematic filmmaking techniques and storytelling skills. The film's cast includes the illustrious Leonardo DiCaprio starring alongside his love interest, Kate Winslet. In addition to these actors, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Francis Fisher, and Gloria Stuart are all seen on screen during the 3 hours and 14 minutes of the film. These actors join together in a grand and moving film that accurately portrays the events of the Titanic’s ill-fated voyage through the eyes of the fictional characters invented by James Cameron himself. After twenty-five years, the story remains a beautiful capture of what it means to fall in love in a society...

Kate Winslet’s press tour for “Avatar: The Way of Water” has included several memorable moments, but few come close to matching Winslet’s decision to help motivate a first-time interviewer during an international press junket. A video of Winslet sharing words of encouragement to a shy young reporter has gone viral on social media, with the clip surpassing 1 million views on Twitter in less than 24 hours.
Winslet was being interviewed for the German TV network Zdf (via The Independent) when the outlet’s young reporter, Martha, told the Oscar winner, “Um, it’s my first time.” Winslet paused the interview and leaned closer to the reporter.
“This is your first time doing it?” Winslet asked. “Ok, well guess what? When we do this interview, it’s going to be the most amazing interview ever. And do you know why? Because we’ve decided that it’s going to be.

James Cameron's "Avatar" film series is an ongoing work of science fiction built upon more money and sheer human effort than any single Hollywood project has any right to be made with. And yet, somehow, it exists, so we're absolutely going to talk about it. Every frame of CGI (which is basically every frame of both films) denotes the combined skill of hundreds of VFX artists. Taking it a step further, every design that the VFX team brought to life denotes another tier of creators, whether it be Dylan Cole, who shaped the oceanic side of Pandora for "The Way of Water," or Deborah L. Scott, who clothed Cameron's Na'vi in both of the "Avatar" films.
You'd think that designing a few loincloths for fancy cartoon space aliens would be easy, especially for someone like Scott whose previous credits include everything from "Back to the Future" and "Titanic" to "The Amazing Spider-Man 2,...

In 2009, "Avatar" became the biggest box office movie of all time, and now it looks like James Cameron's sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water" is picking up where the original left off, having just crossed 1.5 billion globally. That fact is a ringing global endorsement for a franchise that has been accused in the past of having very little cultural impact. It also means that people are responding to the strong female characters in the film.
Ideally, the extra attention being paid to highlighting fully-realized characters like Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and Ronal (Kate Winslet), the matriarch of the Metkayina clan, won't be necessary for much longer. Inspiration can come from anyone. In a perfect world, like the one the Na'vi are trying to protect, there would hopefully be less need to applaud and single out a warrior just for protecting her home world, like the other tribesmen.

For James Cameron, the filming of Avatar: The Way of Water allowed him to focus on his actors and their performances in a way he’s not used to. The filmmaker, who is known for set pieces in films such as the Terminator franchise, Titanic and True Lies, notes that it was freeing to have none of the usual distractions on The Way of Water, which was filmed with actors using performance capture technology in New Zealand.
“As a director, I’m much more attuned to the actors, because that’s all I have to worry about,” Cameron says in a new behind-the-scenes featurette, which The Hollywood Reporter is debuting. “I’m not distracted by the camera move or the extras in the background. The following post contains spoilers for "Avatar: The Way of Water."
Audiences have returned to Pandora almost a decade and a half after our first visit to James Cameron's "Avatar." The sequel takes place 14 years after the original film, and Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) have a family of both biological and adopted children. Since most of the humans left Pandora, there have been years of peace. Now the Rda (Resources Development Administration) has returned, with Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) in a Na'vi avatar (it's complicated). Earth is dying, and there are riches to exploit here. You see where this is going.
The Sully family has to evacuate after the children are captured, but the Rda is hunting them. They move to join the Metkayina, a faraway group of Na'vi who have evolved slightly differently to swim in the sea and commune with sentient whale-like creatures called Tulkun.

“Titanic” director James Cameron’s first venture to Pandora made way for the new sequel film “Avatar: The Way of Water” splashing into theaters this weekend. The first encounter with the beautiful, otherworldly planet of Pandora in 2009 introduced us to Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) who form a Pocahontas-like bond that leads to a romance crossing many lines on both sides of the uneasy rapport between their people. Jake comes to Pandora a paralyzed ex-marine who can no longer use his legs, excited to be able to walk again in the tall blue body of his Avatar. What starts out as an attempted conquest and of the Na’vi people turns into what Jake’s fellow soldiers see as a betrayal when he sides with the Na’vi and Neytiri to save their homeland from destruction and colonization.

On December 16, “Avatar: The Way of Water” was released in theaters. Director James Cameron‘s long-awaited sequel to the 2009 original has Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver reprising their roles alongside newcomers Kate Winslet and Edie Falco. The plot, centered a decade after “Avatar,” focuses on Jake Sully (Worthington). He lives with his newfound family on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri (Saldana) and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their home.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is finally here.
James Cameron’s long-in-development follow-up to his 2009 blockbuster, the most successful movie of all time, transports viewers back to the planet Pandora, full of wonderfully weird extraterrestrial life and, of course, larger-than-life manmade threats. This time around we join Jake (Sam Worthington), the former-human-turned-Na’vi and his wife, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), plus their kids Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) and Tuktirey (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), plus their adopted kids Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) and human kid Spider (Jack Champion). This happy brood is displaced when the evil corporation Rda returns to the planet and with them Recombinants – resurrected versions of the evil soldiers from the first movie, this time in Avatar form, led by Quaritch (Stephen Lang).
In order to save his family (and the rest of Pandora), Jake flees to the water and asks for sanctuary from the reef tride, led...

This post contains spoilers for "Avatar: The Way of Water."
Even the biggest detractors of the "Avatar" franchise acknowledge that it looks damn good. Both the first film when it came out, and the new one, "Avatar: The Way of Water," represent the absolute pinnacle of special effects at the time of each project's completion. You don't have to care about human-turned-alien hybrid Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) or the Na'vi princess Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) to appreciate how mind-blowing it is that they look like real outer space creatures, down to every near-microscopic pore in their faces.
Not content with merely generating photo-realistic aliens, however, writer-director James Cameron has created an entire photo-real ecosystem and staged massive battles within it. All of these are eye-catching — but which of them truly takes our breaths away the most?

James Cameron likes his female heroines as strong and capable as possible. For instance, take Sigourney Weaver‘s Ellen Ripley in “Aliens” or Linda Hamilton‘s Sarah Connor in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” But according to Cameron, Kate Winslet‘s Ronal in “Avatar: The Way Of Water” is the director’s most “empowering” female action hero yet.

Spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water follow.
Ever since "Avatar" was released in 2009, creator and director James Cameron has promised that multiple sequels would follow. As the last 13 years rolled on, Cameron's insistence on the sequels coming to fruition began to resemble a boast more than a promise. However, just like George Lucas before him, Cameron was playing the long game when it came to his vision for the future of the planet Pandora and its inhabitants, and the second film (entitled "The Way of Water") has finally arrived.
Yet while Cameron's commitment to the series is now abundantly clear, what exactly will occur in the sequels has remained a mystery prior to the release of the new installment. It's wild to realize in today's landscape of films and shows saturated by previously existing IP, but there are no prior "Avatar" novels, comic books or video games that act...

ReviewJames Cameron’s sequel looks so glorious all the time that you can’t tear your eyes away from it despite the lengthy runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes.Sowmya RajendranA family man must defend his loved ones against a powerful enemy. They take refuge among friends and establish new bonds; the hormonal teenagers hit on each other, the younger ones explore the new place with excitement, and the kids occasionally rebel against the adults. But the enemy is relentless and soon, the family must come together to confront him. This could be the plot of just about any movie. It’s not particularly original, and Hollywood has mounted thinly plotted, lavish productions on the ‘families stick together’ trope way too often. But in James Cameron’s hands, this familiar old wine transforms into a jaw-dropping, exhilarating cinematic experience. The first film in the franchise was released back in 2009 and yet,...

Avatar: The Way Of Water
Along with Empire Of Light, this week’s film is also a bit of cinema nostalgia. No, it’s not about the beginning of Hollywood or a particular famous director, nor Like Eol a movie palace. That’s because it has something in common with this year’s (so far) biggest box office earner: it is a sequel several years after the original. Now it doesn’t come close to the 36 years between the Top Gun flicks, but 13 is a long stretch indeed. That’s when James Cameron followed up the, then, biggest film of all time, Titanic, with a film that surpassed it (at the time). And now after endless reports and rumors, official and unofficial announcements, the sequel to his Sf-fantasy epic is finally here (supposedly the first of at least four follow-ups). So dust off those 3D stereo specs for a return...

It is impossible to talk about “Avatar: The Way of Water” without sounding hyperbolic. But James Cameron’s sequel is a truly dazzling cinematic experience that will have you floating on a blockbuster high.
No matter if you’ve spent a second of your life in the past 13 years thinking about what’s happening on Pandora or how Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are getting on, assuming you remember their characters’ names. “The Way of Water” will make awe-struck believers out of even “Avatar” agnostics like me, at least for three hours and 12 minutes. The film isn’t just visually compelling, either, it’s spiritually rich as well — a simple but penetrating story about family and the natural world that is galaxies better than the first.
About that run time: Three hours and 12 minutes sounds excessive, but there is something decidedly decadent about really committing that much...

After sitting through hours upon hours of heavy dramas offered up for awards consideration, the escapism dished up by James Cameron with Avatar: The Way of Water felt like a burst of pure joy. Avatar: The Way of Water is a visually dazzling experience that needs to be seen on the largest screen possible, and in 3-D if it’s available.
James Cameron and his team have delivered a stunning sequel that outdoes its 2009 predecessor in every possible way. There are more spectacular action sequences, the characters are better developed, and the visual effects are groundbreaking. Cameron even managed to make the sequel more emotionally compelling, hitting all the right beats and allowing audiences to get lost in this make-believe world populated by the strange-looking blue Na’vi, the aquamarine-tinted Metkayina clan, and massive whales. The release of Avatar: The Way of Water is nearly upon us. Director James Cameron recently chatted with Robert Rodriguez for Variety’s Directors on Directors series about the Avatar sequel, and Rodriguez brought up the pregnant Na’vi warriors. Both Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri and Kate Winslet’s Ronal are depicted as pregnant in the movie, which Cameron says takes female empowerment to the next level.
Everybody’s always talking about female empowerment. But what is such a big part of a woman’s life that we, as men, don’t experience? And I thought, “Well, if you’re really going to go all the way down the rabbit hole of female empowerment, let’s have a female warrior who’s six months pregnant in battle.” It doesn’t happen in our society — probably hasn’t happened for hundreds of years. But I guarantee you, back in the day,...

Kate Winslet recorded herself resurfacing after holding her breath underwater while filming Avatar: The Way of Water.
In 2020, the Titanic star first made headlines with her record-breaking seven-minute and 15-second breath hold while shooting James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel.
Winslet recently spoke with Games Radar about “smashing” previous records set by Tom Cruise during his six-minute underwater sequence for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.
“I have the video of me surfacing saying, ‘Am I dead, have I died?’ And then going, ‘What was [my time]?’” Winslet said.
“Straight away I wanted to know my time. And I couldn’t believe it… The next thing I say is, ‘We need to radio set. I wanted Jim [Cameron] to know right away.”
Director Cameron later joked: “She’s not competitive at all.”
“Well, I didn’t have to hold my breath for over seven minutes,” Winslet explained.
“It’s just that the opportunity to set a record presented itself.

Thirteen years after directing the first Avatar film in 2009, James Cameron returns to the director’s chair to helm the film’s long-awaited sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water. What is surprising is not that the film is entertaining, rather, it is more of a revelation that Avatar: The Way of Water may be the director’s most accomplished and well-rounded outing to date.
Taking place more than ten years following the events of the first film, The Way of Water tells the ongoing saga of the Sully family as they attempt to forge a future for the inhabitants of Pandora – the Na’vi – when humans return after discovering a new resource on the planet to plunder.
The humans know that they stand no chance against the messianic Sully unless they can infiltrate the Na’vi and plan to do so through subterfuge and the presence of the newly resurrected...

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is an epic sci-fi film, sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 film ‘Avatar’. When Avatar was released, more than a decade after Titanic, it was a spectacle one wouldn’t want to miss for the world. It was a unique concept with an out of this world (literally) landscapes and characters, a subconscious reference to reincarnation. In Avatar: The Way of Water the whole idea of ‘Avatar’ – the artificially created body, remotely piloted into the unknown, which crucially formed a dramatic part, is left behind!

Who cares about Avatar? No one quite seems to know. James Cameron’s 2009 behemoth, the highest-grossing film in the world until Avengers: Endgame a decade later, has been at the centre of a small cultural fracas in the lead-up to its Covid-delayed sequel. One half of the internet has fervently defended the film against claims by the other that it’s, as actor and podcast host Griffin Newman once coined, only “memorable for being unmemorable”. Where is its mark on the world? Where are the legions of fans strutting around in blue body paint and wiggly cat ears? Where are the imitators? Shouldn’t there have been a million more derivative films about aliens defending themselves from colonisation?
I can answer these questions no better than anyone else. But, sitting down 13 years later to watch Avatar: The Way of Water, after years of Cameron promising his follow-up would make us...

Review: So that’s why it took so long. That’s sure to be the thought of many an audience member while watching James Cameron’s majestic Avatar: The Way of Water unfurl before them on the big screen (understatement of the year: See this on the biggest screen possible). It’s been 12 years since Avatar become a global phenomenon, and the inevitable encore has taken its sweet time reaching those of us who were eager to see what else Pandora had to offer. The wait was significant, but necessary: Cameron and his technicians, artists and designers clearly needed the years to ensure the sequel topped the original in every conceivable way. They’ve succeeded, and then some.

Avatar: The Way of Water is a long time coming. The newest chapter in James Cameron’s spears-versus-guns, aliens-versus-predators epic has been planned all along, and its own sequel, Avatar 3, is already set for a 2024 release (the movies were filmed simultaneously). Avatar 4, partially shot, has been slated for 2026. The fifth installment’s got a script. These are movies in which the colonizing empire is the bad guy, the destroyer and abuser of a new world and the people — called Na’vi — inhabiting it. Maybe there’s some irony in...

It has been over a decade since we had the first Avatar movie which is not dissimilar from an empty vase – it’s pretty to look at but gosh, there isn’t much inside. Now we finally have a sequel – Avatar The Way of Water.
Set years after the first film, The Way of Water follows Jake Sully and his new family as they live in the glorious world of Pandora. However, soon humanity comes back and threatens Jake’s idyllic life. In order to escape the insurgence, Jake takes his family to the Reef people and they all have to learn…the way of water…to survive.
The world that Cameron has created is vast and plentiful, and The Way of Water opens up a whole new element to Pandora. Thousands of CGI artists have painstakingly provided astonishing visuals, transporting you to this colourful (though mainly blue), vast world.

Kate Winslet’s seven minute-plus underwater breath hold for “Avatar: The Way of Water” has been making headlines since 2020, but moviegoers will finally get to see what all the fuss is about as James Cameron’s long-awaited “Avatar” sequel finally opens in theaters. Actress Kate Winslet has beaten Hollywood star Tom Cruise’s record after she held her breath for a staggering seven minutes and 15 seconds while filming ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’. The average person can hold their breath for roughly one or two minutes.
The actress, 47, who plays Ronal in the highly anticipated sequel stayed underwater for seven minutes and 15 seconds.
Cruise famously held his breath for six minutes on the set of ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’.
Winslet was so chuffed with her aquatics skills that she got her husband to video the scene after she sneaked him on set during production.
Speaking at a global press conference ahead of the film’s launch she said: “I actually have a video of when I surface from that breath-hold. And the only reason I have it is because my husband snuck in.
“I said, ‘Please don’t come because I just don’t want you videoing.

It was around 2015, some six years after “Avatar” was released, that director James Cameron reached out to the film’s leads, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, to talk them through a potential sequel (or four). “We saw kind of a design element of the story,” recalls Worthington, who returns as human-turned-Na’vi Jake in the latest film. “It was like a campfire tale done in beautiful pictures right up until potentially the end of the saga.”
Saldana, who plays Na’vi warrior (and Jake’s partner) Neytiri, interjects: “That’s when he [Cameron] told us it’s gonna be in the water.”
Perhaps it was inevitable that Cameron, who as well as being a director is also a deep sea explorer, would eventually incorporate two of what appear to be his greatest loves: the Avatar universe, to which he has dedicated the last two decades of his life (and plans to...

Kate Winslet became a star right before our eyes when she sailed the open seas, wrapped in the arms of Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's monster hit "Titanic" back in December of 1997. Winslet reportedly beat out Winona Ryder, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Claire Danes (who had just co-starred with DiCaprio in "Romeo + Juliet") to earn the now iconic role of Rose. Now, Winslet and Cameron have reunited in another ocean-themed epic, "Avatar: The Way of Water," which is finally coming to theaters on December 16, 2022.
Winslet will employ her Oscar-winning acting abilities to inhabit a new Na'vi character named Ronal, a lionhearted leader of the oceanic Metkayina tribe. In the film's trailer, she's seen next to another Metkayina tribe member, Tonowari, played by New Zealander Cliff Curtis. "Avatar: The Way of Water" takes place more than a decade after the events of the first film, and will follow Jake (Sam Worthington...

James Cameron brought a little of Pandora — and a lot of his starry cast — to London for the “Avatar: The Way of Water” world premiere on Tuesday night. The long-promised, eagerly-awaited sequel has been 13 years in the making, and now it’s finally set to debut in cinemas in just a few days, a moment the director wasn’t always sure would come.
“I had a lot of doubt when the pandemic hit,” Cameron told Variety on the blue carpet in Leicester Square. “We got shut down for six months. We didn’t know if there were going to be any movie theaters left to release the movie into. But we’ve survived all that. The theaters are full again. It’s all back. We’re all sold out for the first few weeks. So yeah, pretty happy!”
