It’s the second Australian acquisition by the ViacomCBS-owned premium network of late, having also picked up See-Saw Films’ The End last September.

If you're still shipping Peregrine and James, Ms. Fisher's Modern Mysteries Season 2 Episode 6 is the episode for you.
Acorn TV was kind enough to provide TV Fanatic with an exclusive clip of the upcoming episode that finds the pair working a case that gives them some food for thought.
"On race day, the president of the Sandridge Pigeon Club is discovered dead in the coop, covered in feathers and choked by birdseed," reads the logline for the episode.
"While Peregrine works the case with James, Birdie has her own mysterious mission to complete."
The clip shows the ever-observant Ms. Fisher speaking to James and dissecting her observations about the guest characters who very well could have murdered the man found in his coop.
What's immediately obvious is that the conversation begins about those characters, but it very quickly becomes about the two characters at the wheel of the show.

Balancing humour and pathos: Kristen Dunphy and Chloe Rickard on the controlled chaos of ‘Wakefield’
When Wakefield premiered on the ABC this month, it was the culmination of a nearly decade-long journey for creator and showrunner Kristen Dunphy.
Finding a home for the mental health-focused series was only half the battle for its creative team as they were forced to navigate a Covid-19 shutdown across international and state borders. Dunphy and executive producer Chloe Rickard, COO Jungle Entertainment, talk to If about what it meant to finally complete the project.
Introspection resulting from self-isolation is hardly a new phenomenon.
But how does it factor into the portrayal of a fictional character?
In the case of Wakefield, Covid-19 protocol may have given lead actor Rudi Dharmalingam some of the emotional triggers necessary to step into the role of Nikhil Katira, a psychiatric nurse whose sanity begins to unravel while working at the titular facility.
Before he could resume filming the miniseries following the Covid-19 lockdown, Dharmalingam first had to complete quarantine,...

With a gift for soothing the afflicted and reaching the unreachable, he’s the most stable person in what tends to be a pretty crazy place. But right now, his grip on his own sanity is slipping. The question is… why?
Joining Dharmalingam in the cast of the eight-part ABC/Jungle Entertainment drama are Geraldine Hakewill, Mandy McElinney, Harriet Dyer, Harry Greenwood, Ryan Corr, Felicity Ward, Kim Gyngell, Dan Wyllie, Sam Simmons and Bessie Holland.

Fiona Eagger.
The biggest challenge facing TV producers next year is figuring out ways to keep Australian dramas screening on the free-to-air broadcasters, according to Fiona Eagger.
Eagger, who co-founded Every Cloud Productions with Deb Cox, welcomes the raising of the TV Producer Offset to 30 per cent but laments the abolition of the local content sub-quotas for Fta networks.
“For Australian producers our greatest challenge is keeping Australian drama alive on our free-to-airs,” she tells If. “All the networks want to keep making Australian drama because when it hits the sweet spot, it creates great audience loyalty to a brand.
“But they’re worried about their revenues and livelihoods so, hand-in-glove with Screen Australia and the state agencies, we have to be really clever in how we put deals together.
“We are resilient and inventive but it’s not easy when the government gives on one hand but takes away on the other hand.

Jocelyn Moorhouse with Dop Martin McGrath on the ‘Wakefield’ set.
Jocelyn Moorhouse was shooting the ABC’s Stateless when Jungle Entertainment offered her the gig of set-up director of the ABC drama Wakefield.
The concept was unlike anything she’d ever heard of, centering on the interaction between staff and patients at a Blue Mountains psychiatric hospital, leavened with musical numbers and tap dancing, so she was hooked.
Brit Rudi Dharmalingam plays Nik, a gifted psych nurse in the eight-episode show created by Kristen Dunphy, who is the showrunner with Sam Meikle, produced by Shay Spencer and Ally Henville for Jungle Entertainment and BBC Studios.
The sanest person in a pretty crazy place, Nik is confronted by a dark secret from his past when a song gets stuck in his head.
Reuniting with the director after collaborating on the Seven Network’s Wanted, Geraldine Hakewill plays a psychiatrist, with Mandy McElhinney as the head nurse.

When we left Phryne Fisher five years ago after the third season of “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries,” the Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s glamorous Jazz Age private eye was jetting off in her own biplane, flying away from a bunch of stylishly solved murders and a complicated relationship with Melbourne Detective Inspector Jack Robinson.
This, obviously, was just a thoroughly and totally unacceptable way to end the show.
Based on the 20-book series of “Miss Fisher” mysteries by Kerry Greenwood, fans knew there were plenty more stories waiting to be embodied by the cult favorite character, played by Essie Davis. Another season of the television show wasn’t in the cards at ABC, so producers Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger, via their production company Every Cloud Productions, turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for a movie-length installment — which promptly almost tripled its fundraising goal and started filming.

We talked to Miss Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries' Geraldine Hakewill about becoming the next Miss Fisher in the popular franchise.
The world of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries expands with Miss Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries, a spin-off series that proves that, while Essie Davis' Phyrne Fisher is a force of nature entirely her own, this feminist murder mystery period formula is more powerful than even its charismatic original leading lady.
Stepping into Davis' very fashionable shoes is the charismatic Geraldine Hakewill, who plays Peregrine Fisher, Phyrne's neice in Miss Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries, set in Melbourne, Australia in the 1960s. Like her aunt, Peregrine is unapologetically herself, solving mysteries that matter with or without the help of the Melbourne police.

In 1965 Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland came up with the term “youthquake” to describe the social upheaval as the 1950s-set constraints on pop culture, fashion, and, well, decorum were cast aside. The new four-part series from Acorn TV, “Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries,” takes place in Australia during this exact era, and costume designer Maria Pattison was tasked with capturing this exuberance in the outfits worn by Peregrine Fisher, portrayed by Geraldine Hakewill.
“She was grounded in the youthquake movement and power to the people,” Pattison said recently in an interview with IndieWire. “A lot of expression was coming out through clothing, because ready-to-wear was happening and people were able to choose things off the rack and create their own style.”
The result is a vibrant color palette of jewel tones and pastels in polished, tailored looks that never veer into fusty. “When we think of the ‘60s a lot...

In this nostalgia-saturated cultural landscape, it’s inevitable that any beloved series will seem ripe for an update. The question then becomes: How do you do it authentically without becoming the spinoff that fans discuss with a bunch of mumbled caveats along the lines of “trust me, the original was better.”
Australian actress Geraldine Hakewill found herself in this very place when she won the titular role in “Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries,” the follow-up to “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.” “Miss Fisher,” set in 1920s Melbourne, debuted in 2012 in Australia and starred Essie Davis as a glamorous private detective who balanced her love of the finer things in life with solving crimes. Thanks to airings on Acorn TV, Netflix and PBS, it has gained a cult following – enough of one that in 2017 a Kickstarter to make a Miss Fisher movie raised over half a million dollars.

Based on the series of novels by Kerry Greenwood, “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” made a splash on ABC in Australia in 2012, telling the tale of Phryne Fisher, a detective in 1920s Melbourne who balanced crime-solving with (gasp!) cocktail drinking and (gasp!) fast car driving and (gasp!) professional-caliber flirting and (big gasp!) opinion-having. After its Aussie debut, the show gained an American fanbase with subsequent airings on PBS, Netflix, and Acorn TV.
Now, in an Acorn TV Original series that aired in Australia earlier this year and will debut in the U.S. on April 29, spinoff “Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries” updates the scenario to the 1960s, with Peregrine Fisher – Phryne’s niece, who inherits her estate after she disappears and is presumed dead – arriving on the scene to take over detective duties.

Geraldine Hakewill as Peregrine Fisher.
The first of four Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries telemovies won its timeslot on the Seven Network last night.
Produced by Beth Frey for Every Cloud Productions, the show was No. 1 across its two hours, although the first hour trailed Network 10’s Gogglebox and the ABC’s Escape from the City.
Seven claimed victory because the viewing figures averaged across the two hours exceeded those on 10 and the ABC.
Created by Fiona Eagger and Deb Cox and directed by Fiona Banks, the 1964-set drama-comedy introduced Geraldine Hakewill as Peregrine Fisher, who takes on the mantle of lady private detective from Phryne Fisher, the aunt she never knew.
Teaming up with a club of feisty women known as The Adventuresses, she went undercover at a department store to solve the murder of a Barbie Jones, a glamorous model who is found perched on a...

Director Fiona Banks is tired of watching shows which depict women as victims, back-stabbers or characters who are pitted against each other.
So she was thrilled when she was offered Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, Every Cloud Productions’ spin off of the ABC series which starred Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher.
“The thing that drew me to the show from the word go is the genuine friendships between the women,” says Banks, who served as the set-up director for the first time in her illustrious career.
“These women support and encourage each other. These are good strong relationships. They are not always in agreement with each other and there is lot of humour and strength of character.”

In 2010, filmmaker Tony Prescott studied directing at Aftrs, where "the education was based on making a feature, but we made short films"..

In 2011 he started developing an idea for a feature that he developed over five years - and forty drafts - with fellow Aftrs student James Raue (whose own first film, Psychoanalysis, is currently touring festivals).
The Pretend One is about a young woman (Wanted's Geraldine Hakewill) and her imaginary friend (Michael Whalley).
Their relationship becomes complicated when a suitor comes to town and Whalley's character becomes jealous.
Talking to people about the kind of Australian film he wanted to make, Prescott "struggled to find a reference".

There are more than 600 islands in all, and Bill Bennett’s Uninhabited is set on one of them. Strange occurrences threaten to disrupt their peaceful getaway -...
