- Joseph Archer was born on February 11, 1938 in New York City, New York, USA. He is an actor, known for Route 66 (1960).
- He became a professional boxer in 1956 and won his first 30 fights. He was a skilled boxer who lacked major punching power. He fought twice for the middleweight title, in 1966 and 1967, both times against Emile Griffith. He lost both fights by close decisions. He retired following the second title loss with a career record of 45-4 (8 KO).
- His brother, Jimmy Archer, was also a professional fighter before becoming an actor.
- Archer is credited with ending Sugar Ray Robinson's boxing career via a unanimous 10-round victory in front of 9,234 fans at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena on November 10, 1965.
