High school football kicks off this weekend in many parts of the United States. For some student-athletes, high school ball is a fun way to hang out with friends and get good exercise, but for others, it’s a chance to secure a scholarship to one of the top colleges in the country.
Many high school players who will be in action this season have already made commitments to their college of choice. Fans who want to watch high school football now should check out the Nfhs Network, a direct-to-consumer (Dtc) service that offers more than 300,000 high school sporting events every year. A large portion of the top high school football programs in America are signed on with Nfhs Network, making it the best place to see the college football stars of tomorrow play today.

Director Andrew Bujalski invented mumblecore with his 2002 debut, Funny Ha Ha. His latest film, Computer Chess, stars the geeky competitors of an eighties virtual-chess tournament. These are the movies, books, TV shows, albums, and European countries that shaped his work. 1. Austin City Lights and Brookline Is My Lady (Public-access TV shows)Public access is always the best thing on TV. It’s the last stand of the avant-garde. Austin City Lights was this stunning show with a cast of eccentrics, including a strange woman named “Flash” Jordan Thomas and her mother, Lady B. I have a strong memory of them standing around singing a song they seemed to be making up on the spot. Brookline Is My Lady was a variety show from Boston in the nineties. Sketch-comedy stuff that you wouldn’t find in a more professional production. 2. Elvis Costello, Get Happy!!If I could be a musician, I...

For all the billions the medium makes year-on-year, you figure people of all stripes are buying video games. Black, Asian, gay, disabled... the pleasures of video games speaks to all of them. But the games industry does a lousy job when it comes to diversity. Most lead characters are, as I said yesterday, Standard Issue White Guy #38 and their supporting casts generally hew to the same WASPy mold. Where there are characters that come from alternative backgrounds, tokenism usually runs rampant, meaning that you don't really get good characterization. If you're lucky, stereotypes are avoided and all you need to do shake your head at missed opportunities.
But, the team at 2K Games that's making 2012 shooter "Xcom" wants to make the most of an opportunity. According to an interview at Gay Gamer, they're putting a closeted gay scientist in the Fps/strategy hybrid and he won't be any kind of mincing sidekick.

At last years E3, 2K showed off its reboot of the MicroProse classic “X-com,” a turn-based tactical game from the 90s that actually borrowed from Gerry Anderson’s 70s “UFO” series. Who could ever forget the purple wigs? Besides striking the hyphen in the title, 2K Marin transmogrified the game into a pretty pedestrian looking first-person shooter that was panned by diehard fans for not being true to the franchise and for not being turn-based like the original game.

In this video game spectacular, Will, Jeff and Lucas are joined by their gassy, yet charming friend Max to discuss the glut of video games that were offered by developers over the past month or so. They also talk about the demos they have been playing, the games they’re looking forward to and some of the awesome events happening in Toronto over the next few weeks.

Without ruining major plot points in "BioShock 2" (the game did release just two days ago, after all), people are obviously thinking ahead to "BioShock 3" and where it might take place. Does it return to Rapture, or are we moving to another twisted location entirely? Sitting down with Jordan Thomas, the creative director of "BioShock 2," I asked him if they feel like they've finished telling the story of Rapture. Here's what he said:
"No. The whole argument of 'BioShock 2' is that you can zoom in on a personal story within that mysterious setting. I think Rapture's a very fertile place. That said, if you follow the whole backstory, it is intricate as all get out. The amount of space within there to move around and to build idealogs gone wrong, like Ryan and Lamb, gets trickier each time you add one.
"So much of the backstory comes from the past,...

Those who haven't been following the progress of "BioShock 2" may be surprised to learn that the above image, created by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, depicts the protagonist of the game. Yes, you are a Big Daddy, and your nemesis is one Sophia Lamb, who has taken control of Rapture after the fall of Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan's motivations were so crucial to understanding the underwater world of Rapture, but Sophia Lamb's philosophies take center stage in "BioShock 2," so I want to make sure you guys understand where she's coming from. Thankfully, Hogarth De La Plante, who worked on the original "BioShock" and is now the lead environmental artist for "BioShock 2," was more than happy to discuss just what makes Lamb tick. In his words:
"Lamb is…on the other end of the scale [from Andrew Ryan]. She's sort of Marxist. People always ask, 'If Andrew Ryan is modeled after Ayn Rand,...

How do you turn a deeply flawed man into a religious figure? Simple: make a sequel. That's what 2K Games did with the protagonist of the critically acclaimed "BioShock" for the upcoming sequel, "BioShock 2." The follow up to one of the best games of 2007 takes place ten years after the original game, where the inhabitants of Rapture are left with a very deep impression of the original's main character, Jack Ryan; so much so that some of the inhabitants of Rapture have placed him on a pedestal usually reserved for holy figures. At a recent demo, "BioShock 2"'s creative director, Jordan Thomas, had this to say when asked about Jack’s role in the upcoming game:
"He's mentioned. His story, for the purposes of 'BioShock 2,' is over, in terms of his world driving narrative. That said, the things that he did are being fiercely debated by the splicers, because...
