Spike Lee was not on the speakers list at a rally Thursday morning for striking film and television writers outside City Hall in New York. But one of the Brooklyn-born filmmaker’s best-loved movies, 1989’s Do the Right Thing, kept cropping up as local elected officials took turns calling for studio executives to resume negotiations with the Writers Guild of America and help end a strike now in its eighth week.
“Eight weeks is too long — It’s time for a fair contract,” said Carmen De La Rosa, one of 12 elected members of New York’s 51-seat City Council who spoke at a demonstration in downtown Manhattan organized by the WGA East. De La Rosa on Thursday introduced a formal resolution that her colleagues will vote on calling for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to resume “good faith” negotiations with the WGA and settle their differences equitably.

With the recent airing of the four-part documentary series “Allen v. Farrow” on HBO, Woody Allen’s name has been in the news a lot over the last few weeks. And with so much renewed interest in long-standing allegations against Allen, there’s now a new round of people attempting to distance themselves from the director.
As reported by the New York Post, Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, recently contributed $1,000 to the campaign of Julie Menin, who is running for a city council seat on the Upper East Side in New York. However, Menin and her camp refused the donation and immediately returned it to the couple. “Julie doesn’t know Mr. Allen and the campaign did not solicit this contribution. It was returned the same day it came in because of past allegations against Mr. Allen,” said Menin rep Max Kramer.

Maybe Lin-Manuel Miranda really can do everything. When Broadway’s favorite bookstore — The Drama Book Shop — was evicted from its longtime Theater District home in January, Miranda and some influential pals came to its rescue.
But as any New Yorker knows to their bones, the only thing riskier than an audition is pinning your dreams to real estate wishes. So today’s news is welcomed: The Drama Book Shop will reopen its doors in March at its new location — 266 West 39th Street — just a block south of the previous one.
Stuffed with scripts, librettos, monologues and any other books about or needed by the theater community, the independent bookstore had been a district mainstay for more than 100 years (though not in the same location). Squeezed out of its building by Manhattan’s ever-costly real estate market, the store announced its closing.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, his Hamilton director Thomas Kail and producer Jeffrey Seller are coming to the rescue of a beloved New York bookstore. Along with theater owner James L. Nederlander, the group has agreed to buy the beleaguered Drama Book Shop in Manhattan’s theater district.
The new owners, with support from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment, will reopen the soon-to-close bookstore in the fall of 2019, according to an announcement today.
The Drama Book Shop, in various locations, has been catering to the city’s theater community for a century, offering what’s considered one of the largest selections of plays, scripts and related materials in the country. The space is a frequent home to readings, book parties and get-togethers for the theater crowd, and even won a special 2011 Tony Award for excellence.
But huge rent increases made the shop’s current location (since 2001) on West 40th Street untenable.

There’s plenty of production to go around. That was the message sent Tuesday by the film commissioners of New York City and New Jersey during a conversation held as part of the annual Crain’s Entertainment Summit.
Julie Menin, commissioner of the New York City Mayor’s office of Media and Entertainment, and Steven Gorelick, executive director New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission, made it clear that New York and New Jersey are not feverishly competing to lure projects to one side of the Hudson River or the other. The conversation, moderated by Addie Morfoot, a contributor to Crain’s and Variety, also touched on the booming demand for stage space and location filming sites and the need to develop diversity initiatives to bring more women and persons of color into the entertainment business.

The announcement of intended infrastructural investments indicates the municipal government’s embrace of NYC’s recent filming boom. The city is seeking proposals to develop the 200,000 square feet of the property that will transform it into a mammoth “Made in New York (MiNY) Campus.” The search process will be co-facilitated by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, as headed by Commissioner of Media and Entertainment Julie Menin. The construction will also include the development of dilapidated buildings on the pier, road work, utility upgrades, and streetscaping. New York City Weighs In On Weinstein Co. Bankruptcy, Urges Court To Keep The Studio In The Big Apple
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration has weighed in on the fate of the Weinstein Co., urging the bankruptcy judge who will preside over the sale to consider keeping its successor headquartered in New York City.
The Office of Media and Entertainment appealed to Judge Mary Walrath to weigh the importance of film and television industry to the city, noting it accounts for 130,000 jobs and infuses an estimated $9 billion to its economy.
“The Weinstein Co. has played an important role in that industry, and so I’m writing to respectfully request that the Court, when reviewing the bids, take into consideration a successor to The Weinstein Co. that will maintain its operations in New York City,” wrote the agency’s commissioner, Julie Menin, in a document filed today with the court.

Women on the hunt for their latest artistic endeavor should look no further than the Big Apple. The Mayor’s Office of New York City is planning to implement a series of initiatives created to address gender inequity in film and theater, both on and off screen and stage. The Mome Women’s Fund for Film and Theatre, as it’s called, will “provide funding at strategic moments to help the applicants shepherd their projects to successful completion,” according to the initiative’s website. One of the highlights? A $5 million fund to provide grants to film and theater projects for and about women. “It’s incredibly discouraging that while women comprise 52 percent of the city’s population, less than 10 percent of the top-grossing films are directed by women,” said the Office’s Commissioner, Julie Menin. “I hope that our efforts pave the way for others to follow suit, and look...
