Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

It’s October, and that means it’s horror movie season. Netflix is ready to scare your pants off with the streaming platform’s latest original horror movie, “Eli.” Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Ciarán Foy (“Sinister 2”), the film follows Eli (Charlie Shotwell from 2016’s “Captain Fantastic”), an 11-year-old boy with an auto-immune disorder who, sheltered from the dangerous environmental stimuli of the world, is checked into a “clean house” for treatment. But he soon discovers that the house is not just “clean” — it’s haunted. Think “Bubble Boy” meets “The Conjuring.” Similarities to the latter are reinforced by the presence of Lili Taylor (star of “The Conjuring” and the recently canceled Netflix series “Chambers”) in the film’s cast. Kelly Reilly (recently seen in TV’s “Yellowstone”) also stars.

Similar to how Paramount unloaded The Cloverfield Paradox to Netflix, the studio has sold all global rights for its Paramount Players horror film Eli to Netflix.
Ciaran Foy (Sinister 2) directed the movie which centers around a boy receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder who discovers that the house he’s living isn’t as safe as he thought.
David Chirchirillo, Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing wrote the script. Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy produced Eli with John Zaozirny with Melinda Nishioka as Ep.
Charlie Shotwell, Lili Taylor, Max Martini and Sadie Sink star. Eli was a 2015 Black List horror script and Paramount was originally planning to release the film on Jan. 4 before undating it a few weeks ago.
Paramount also sold overseas to Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Annihilation, thought kept domestic which didn’t take off with $32M at the box office. Recently, Warner Bros. spared any headlines over...

The course of true love failing to run smooth
Have you ever given online dating a try? Tens of millions of people have, and although this has resulted in a lot of happy relationships (and many more mutually satisfying one night stands), it has also, inevitably, produced a few horror stories. Bad Match, which screened at last year's Frightfest, tells the story of two people looking for very different things who collide at a swipe and end up in a very bad place as a result. Director David Chirchirillo uses this construct to talk about men and women's expectations of each other and the extent to which cinema has contributed to them.
It's very much a post-Fatal Attraction film, I suggested when we discussed it last August, and he agreed.
First impressions
"That was one hundred percent the intention. I pitched it as Fatal Attraction for the smartphone generation.

David Chirchirillo, co-writer of 2014's vicious black comedy Cheap Thrills, turns his attention to online dating in Bad Match, the tale of a hookup gone very, very wrong. Blending contemporary concern about the dehumanizing effect of app-enabled sex with much older tropes, it isn't quite the crazy-spurned-woman exploitation flick it seems to be. Though it's no Fatal Attraction, the modest thriller should play well with younger viewers in its limited run.

Stars: Matthew Gray Gubler, AnnaLynne McCord, Alisha Boe, Sheila Vand, Sam Eidson | Written and Directed by Trent Haaga
Seemingly inhabiting the same universe as Cheap Thrills, the film he co-wrote with David Chirchirillo, 68 Kill, Trent Haaga’s second feature as director (his first being Chop) is a similar deep-dive into the fringes of American society – an underbelly that walks the fine line between morality and depravity. A world where people will do anything for money. Or so it would seem.
Trailer-dwelling, sewage-pumping Chip (Matthew Gray Gubler) may not lead the most glamorous life, but he’s got one thing going for him: he’s head over heels infatuated with his girlfriend Liza (AnnaLynne McCord). He’s more than willing to overlook her wild streak, the fact that she’s hooking up with their landlord and her rather extreme mood swings. So when she proposes a plot to steal $68,000, he goes along with the plan.

Time for another Frightfest 2017 interview as our host Stuart Wright talks to writer/director David Chirchirillo, whose film Bad Match has its European Premiere at the festival on Friday 25th August.
An Internet-dating playboy’s life spirals out of control after meeting a woman online in a darkly funny, yet disturbing horror suspense thriller. A look at modern dating techniques and the way people use the Internet to inform and often needlessly complicate their lives. From director David Chirchirillo, the writer of Cheap Thrills, a postmodern Fatal Attraction for the Tinder Generation, which builds upon expectations, and then completely shatters them. No one is who they seem, nothing plays out the way one thinks it will, and by the shocking end, one is left questioning their own lives as a result.
The Horror Channel Frightfest takes place August 24th – 28th 2017 at both the Empire Cinema and Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square.

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy also joins horror ahead of scheduled summer shoot.
Ciarán Foy will direct Broad Green Pictures’ horror film from a screenplay that Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing are rewriting based on David Chirchirillo’s 2015 Black List script.
Production is scheduled to begin this summer on Eli, which centres on a young boy who undergoes treatment for a disease in a clinic that becomes a haunted prison with no way out.

Studio execs vote each year on the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood, with the winners landing on Hollywood Blacklist. For seven years running, there's been a Halloween counterpart, the Blood List, run by Kailey Marsh. Last year, the list featured Jennifer Lopez's iconic The Boy Next Door in all its first-edition-copy-of-The-Iliad glory and the upcoming Blake Lively thriller, Into the Deep. Here are the 13 (yes, 13 because it's spooky) scripts that make up the top — including the upcoming McG film, The Babysitter, and a film named De Niro that Must star Robert De Niro, right?Top 13 Features 1. It is that time again as 2014 is already half over. Wow, time flies when you are watching movies. The year being half over brings my annual, “Top 10 Movies of the Year…So Far” list, and without question this is my strongest list by a long shot. One big reason is the increase of great titles that have been released On Demand. Half of my list in fact is made up of films I saw On Demand. Now I am all for supporting your local Art House Theater as much as possible, but certain films don’t make it outside of La and New York so On Demand is a great tool to experience some great Independent movies. I feel like geek culture is far too obsessed with franchises that stick to the same format over and over again. I enjoy franchise movies as well, as you will see on this list,...

Cheap Thrills – the movie so nice, I reviewed it twice! And by nice, I mean “absolutely bonkers, brutally honest, and disgustingly entertaining,” of course. You didn’t actually think a dark thriller sporting Troma roots would be missing a wicked sense of humor, completed by aided visual extravagance – did you? Scribes Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo attack current economical troubles and societal selfishness by playing a mindless bar game that turns into a gruesome fight for normalcy – not millions, just enough to squeak by. Director E.L. Katz values human lives with measly dollar amounts, but our characters become fixated on surviving the night with handfuls of cash – a beautiful character breakdown that darkly questions our own moral judgement. Can one seriously monetarily evaluate a human life?

Chicago – “Cheap Thrills” is a case study in human desperation and depravity. It’s a sick and twisted film, but it goes about it in a most absorbing albeit uncomfortable way. It’s one of those films that forces the viewer to place themselves in the protagonist’s unpredictable position, asking a question like, “What would you do for money?” Once you do it, what else are you willing to do for more and then, “How far is too far?”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
In his directorial debut, E.L. Katz, along with screenwriters David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga, want us to ask such questions and many more. Based on the levels of humiliation and pain witnessed on the screen, they also want us to squirm in frustrated and anger. It’s like a product of “The Twilight Zone” and “Creepshow” spilling into each other, that happens to deliver one of the most memorable endings of the year.

The movie equivalent of a mean girls’ game whose only goal is the humiliation of its protagonist, for your entertainment. Also: a failed parable of the twistedness of the 1 percent. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
So I was at this party one time in high school, and a bunch of mean girls thought they could trick me into embarrassing myself. The game was: I put a blanket over my head, and then I had to hand them stuff that was on my person until I hit on the one secret item that they had it in their heads that they wanted me to give them. I can’t remember what the first thing I gave them was — something innocuous, like my watch or a shoe, neither of which was the secret thing, of course.

*full disclosure: a theatrical screening of this film was provided by Sinister Cinema. Director: E.L. Katz. Writers: David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga. Cast: Pat Healy, Ethan Embry, Sara Paxton and David Koechner. Raven Banner Entertainment and Sinister Cinema released another thrilling title, called Cheap Thrills, March 27th. This film played in several Canadian cities, for one night only. First time director E.L. Katz delivered a bloody good time with this feature as two men competed for blood money. Vince (Ethan Embry) and Craig (Pat Healy) are in the spotlight for much of the film. And, these two friends find greed more important than any comradery. Truly disturbing, Cheap Thrills is one of the most disturbing indie thrillers to come out this year. The film's story is much like a reality game show. The two contestants, Vince and Craig, compete for money, while performing debaucherous acts. Craig has to forget his...

Cheap Thrills
Written by Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo
Directed by E.L. Katz
USA, 2013
The new film Cheap Thrills is the kind of horror film that’s so effective, you may only want to see it once. Consider that a compliment of the highest order, as this low-budget indie film, playing at Fantastic Fest this weekend, aspires to be a wholly nasty piece of work and reaches that plateau early and often. Anchored by an appropriately sweaty and desperate Pat Healy, Cheap Thrills is gruesome and visceral, while always being slightly tethered to matters of the real world.
Healy is Craig, a would-be writer who gets an eviction notice on the small apartment he, his wife, and his baby son live in, and loses his low-paying mechanic job all on the same day. To drown his sorrows, he slumps over to a bar where he coincidentally runs into an old...

As soon as I saw "Cheap Thrills" at the 2013 SXSW film festival, I knew it was something special. It is a very simple logline, a very direct set-up, but the way it executes the idea is pitch-perfect and it never flinches from the grim path that it sets for itself. I've heaped praise on the direction by E.L. Katz and the script by Trent Haaga and David Chirchirillo, but one of the things that really makes the film sing is the casting. Pat Healy is one of those guys you've seen in a thousand things even if you're not sure you've seen him in a thousand things, and in the last few years, he's finally started getting the roles where you'll remember him. He was so disturbing in "Compliance" as the guy on the phone who creates the situation, and in "The Innkeepers," he and Sara Paxton play a pair...

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And a lot of really gross stuff. This is the sly premise behind the smart -- and, yes, very gross -- thriller “Cheap Thrills,” which has dazzled Midnight festival crowds for the past year and hits theaters March 21.Directed by E.L. Katz from a script by David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga, the film’s premise is simple -- perfect, really, for intelligently executed low-budget fare. Craig (the great indie character actor Pat Healy) has just lost his car mechanic job, and an eviction notice stares him down from the door of his apartment. He has a wife and small baby. In other words, the future looks grim. He decides to drink away his sorrows at a local bar, where he accidentally reunites with an old high school friend, Vince (Ethan Embry), and together they meet a crass, rich couple, Colin and Violet (David Koechner...

Foolish Games: Katz’s Debut Collapses Under Excessive Shock Value
There’s certainly a palpable amount of perverse thrill checkered throughout E.L. Katz’s directorial debut, Cheap Thrills, which hovers somewhere in that realm of self-reflexive commentary on the consumption of violence and psychosexual antics occupied by fare like Michael Haneke’s Funny Games (1997/2007) and Curtis Harrington’s Games (1967). But whatever it happens to put you in mind of, Katz, along with screenwriters David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga, are only able to deliver what the title promises, a cheap, quick thrill ride that may be entertaining and even vicious, but without any kind of real payoff. In the dichotomy of the haves and have-nots, money may be the catalyzing root of all evil, but that doesn’t make depictions of it innately memorable.
Craig (Pat Healy), an aspiring writer and happily married father, is about to have a really bad day.

E.L. Katz's critically-acclaimed dark comedy thriller "Cheap Thrills" which brings together "The Innkeepers" cast of Pat Healy and Sarah Paxton, as well as David Koechner and Ethan Embry, has a new clip called "Strip Club." Pic written by David Chirchirillo and Trent Haago, opens in limited areas and VOD from March 21st, 2014. The film follows Craig (Healy), a struggling family man who loses his low-wage job and is threatened with eviction. In an effort to delay facing the music at home, he heads to a local bar and encounters an old friend (Embry). The two friends are roped into a round of drinks by a charismatic and obscenely wealthy stranger (Koechner) along with his mysterious wife (Paxton). The couple engages the two friends in a series of innocent dares in exchange for money over the course of the evening, with each challenge upping the ante in both reward and boundaries.
