Barry Jenkins wins best director for Moonlight; Casey Affleck, Amy Adams scoop top acting awards.
The National Board Of Review (Nbr) on Tuesday declared Amazon Studios’ Manchester By The Sea its best film of 2016 as it honoured the drama with four awards.
Even though Nbr best film winners seldom go on to claim the best picture Oscar – one must go back to 2009 and Slumdog Millionaire for the last time that happened – the accolade confirms this drama and Monday’s Gothams victor Moonlight as the early awards season heavyweights, a view that the oncoming rush of critics groups awards could very well endorse.
It is notable too that there was a complete shut-out of La La Land and Fences, while Jay Cocks and Martin Scorsese took adapted screenplay honours for Paramount’s little-seen Silence.
Besides the top accolade Manchester By The Sea also earned best actor for Casey Affleck, original screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan, and breakthrough...

Ramin Djawadi is best known for creating the dynamic score for HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones.” His latest television venture is the new drama “Westworld,” based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi film, which is giving audiences a lot to talk about. Every week a new piano cover of a famous rock band song is played, which has fans try to figure out what it has to do with the plot.
The German-Iranian composer spoke with Pitchfork about how he crafted the music for the Western-themed show, as well as explained how the rock songs work well with the series.
“I think it’s a great fit. Like with ‘Fake Plastic Trees’ [by Radiohead] – even if you just take the title — with ‘Westworld,’ what is real? What is not real? You can interpret it in many ways,” the composer expressed.
Over the course of the season we’ve also head renditions...

Wme Global represented Us rights and K5 International the rest of the world on the Nordisk Film Production/Amusement Park Films historical thriller.

Yes, I have too much time on my hands. Here's a new feature that was fun to put together (though quite time-consuming, which makes me worry about my ability to do this every month). I look back at rock, pop, and R&B albums that came out five years ago, ten years ago, etc.

Buffalo Springfield: Again (Atco)
There was much chaos surrounding the creation of this quintet 's second album. Bassist Bruce Palmer, in some ways the soul of the band, was unavailable due to a drug charge deportation, and a string of session players took his place. Stephen Stills, who saw himself as the leader of the group, was feuding with Neil Young, who considered himself an equal, and Young actually quit -- but returned. And that's without getting into the fiasco that was the band's management team.
Nonetheless, it was a quantum leap forward from their debut,...

Nada Surf: The Stars Are Indifferent to Astrology (Barsuk)
I know it's early, but this sure feels like the album of the year. In fact, I'm even ready to crown this the power pop album of the decade. Oh, there's an occasional ballad ("When I Was Young" is especially notable) that reminds of Matthew Caws's twee side, but mostly this rocks out, with guest Doug Gillard (Guided by Voices, Cobra Verde, Death of Samantha, etc.) an important presence -- that wild guitar on "Teenage Dreams" has gotta be him. Rarely has bittersweet sounded so tough. Nada Surf's made lots of excellent albums, but this is their best yet. A limited edition version comes with a second disc containing acoustic versions of five of the album's songs.
Sharon van Etten: Tramp (Jagjaguwar)
I understood why van Etten was a Brooklyn indie fave already based on her earlier releases:...
