Warner Bros. Lands ‘Black Samurai’ Movie From ‘The Color Purple’ Director Blitz Bazawule (Exclusive)
In a competitive situation, Warner Bros. has landed “The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule’s next project, which takes on the legendary Yasuke, an African warrior who became the first Black samurai.
Sources tell Variety that Warner Bros. beat out three other studios and streamers’ bids on the script, tentatively titled “Black Samurai,” which Bazawule wrote on spec and will direct and produce under his Inward Gaze banner.
After impressing the industry with his 2018 debut “The Burial of Kojo,” helming episodes of Ava DuVernay’s “Cherish the Day” and working with Beyoncé on her feature-length visual album “Black Is King,” Bazawule made his major studio debut with 2023’s “The Color Purple.”

‘Waller’ was confirmed for development in 2022 as a spinoff of ‘Peacemaker’, with Viola Davis returning as the lead character. Recent updates indicate that the show will have a serious tone, in contrast to the comedic approach of ‘Peacemaker’, reflecting Waller’s character.
Originally slated for release in 2024, delays are expected due to director James Gunn’s focus on other Dcu projects. While some sources still mention a 2024 release, 2025 seems more likely.
New additions to the official IMDb page reveal stunt doubles, offering hints about the characters we can expect in the show, though details about the plot remain scarce.
Greg Fitzpatrick will double for Frank Grillo, Nhut Le will portray Vigilante as a stunt actor, Cali Nelle will stand in for Djimon Hounsou, Christopher Tardieu will serve as Sebastian Faust’s double, and Nico Woulard will double for Corey Hawkins.
The name “Vigilante” refers to two characters in the DC Universe.

‘Waller’ was confirmed to be in development back in 2022 as a spinoff of ‘Peacemaker’, with Viola Davis reprising her role as the titular character, recently it’s been confirmed that the show will not be comedy-oriented as ‘Peacemaker’ as Waller is much more serious character, and the show will try to reflect that tone.
‘Waller’ was supposed to be released in 2024, but the fact that Gunn is now focusing on the rest of the Dcu projects, the best-case scenario is that the show gets released in 2025, even though the 2024 release date is still present in some sources.
Since little is known regarding the overall plot of the movie, and the characters set to appear in it, we were delighted when new names appeared on the official IMDb page for the show. Mostly stunt-doubles are in question, but they do reveal what kind of characters we can expect.

Danielle Brooks knows The Color Purple’s Sofia inside out. She spent a year as the boisterous wife in the Broadway revival in 2015, and boasts that she knows everything from the character’s Zodiac sign to the color socks she wore. A decade before her fiery onstage performance, a 15-year-old Brooks admired Felicia P. Fields as Sofia in its initial run on Broadway, whose defiant demeanor made her vulnerable to racial violence. Despite her lifelong ties to the role, she still had to prove herself for the big budget movie musical.

Corey Hawkins is following his acclaimed performance in “The Color Purple” with another prominent role that should further elevate his rapidly rising profile. He’s set to star alongside Willem Dafoe in “The Man in My Basement,” taking over a role vacated by Jonathan Majors.
The film, which hails from first time director Nadia Latif, is an adaptation of Walter Mosley’s 2004 novel of the same name. Hawkins plays Charles Blakey, a man struggling to avoid foreclosing on his ancestral home who enters into a dubious business arrangement with an investor (Dafoe) that quickly takes a dark turn.
Speaking to IndieWire on the SAG Awards red carpet, Hawkins talked replacing Majors at the last minute and the rich artistic experience that the film provided.

Movie musicals are not only back, they're back with a surprising vengeance. Between Paul King's "Wonka" prequel singing and dancing its way to the top of the box office over the winter holidays, Blitz Bazawule's film version of the "Color Purple" Broadway adaptation enjoying a massive opening on Christmas Day, and now Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.'s "Mean Girls" movie musical making fetch happen for real, it's fair to say the musical genre has emerged as an unexpected savior for theaters at a time when we're really starting to feel the effects of the AMPTP having dragged out the two-pronged WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023.
If you've been waiting to get your musical theater on at home (no judgment from us -- you do you), you're in luck! While you'll have to wait a while still for "Wonka" and "Mean Girls" to hit the home market,...

It’s not the first moment we meet the show-stealing Danielle Brooks as Sofia in Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaption of “The Color Purple,” but it might as well be, so clearly (so amusingly) does it capture her essence.
Picture this: We’re in Harpo’s (Corey Hawkins) newly built cabin, a home he’s endeavored mightily to make his own, when who should appear? His own fiancée, Sofia, as ebullient and self-assured as any character we meet in the Alice Walker adaptation, who doesn’t just enter her future house, but literally kicks down the door to make her way inside.
It’s Sofia in a nutshell: buoyant, confident, funny, a little crazy, and impossible to ignore. So it’s only fitting that Brooks, who brings Sofia so wonderfully to life in the film, can be thanked for its creation.

“We went through a lot of different approaches to the story, but nothing that was wildly different than the movie that we ended up with,” Fischer explained. “We actually had one ending for quite a while. The scene in the tavern was Clemens [Corey Hawkins] being approached by a strange, shadowy dude, who starts talking to him, seems to have some knowledge of the experiences that he went through, and introduces himself as Van Helsing. Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Color Purple,” now playing in theaters.
As “The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule and his star-studded cast made their press rounds ahead of the musical movie’s Christmas Day release, they paid a special trip to visit “The View” and Whoopi Goldberg, who starred in the 1985 movie adaptation of Alice Walker’s classic novel.
It’d been nearly 40 years since Goldberg played Celie, an abused and uneducated Southern Black woman whose journey to liberation is at the center of Walker’s tale. Bazawule and stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson wanted to give her her flowers.
“’The Color Purple’ is sacred ground. You don’t just show up to it with nothing to offer or nothing to contribute,” Bazawule said, when Goldberg asked why he decided to sign on for the film. “It’s been a brilliant, Pulitzer Prize-winning book.

This musical remake combines elements from the original movie, Alice Walker‘s novel and the Broadway musical. It is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
The large ensemble includes Danielle Brooks, who has earned Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards nominations for her turn as Sofia, Emmy nominee Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery and Emmy winner Colman Domingo as Mister. Through Celie’s real life hardships and colorful imagination, her journey is chronicled from childhood to adulthood as she discovers her inner strength and how the bonds of sisterhood can overcome any obstacle.

Christmas weekend at the box office was looking potentially disastrous for some movies, with no fewer than nine wide releases over the extended four-day period. Turns out that some movies did far better than others, and Warner Bros. had an especially good weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Considering that 2018’s “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa, grossed $1.1 billion worldwide after an opening weekend of $67.9 million in 4,125 theaters, there were hopes that its sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” might be one of the weekend’s big movies.

It was indeed the number-one movie of the weekend, but with lousy advance tracking and poor reviews, expectations were lowered considerably, and it failed even to achieve those. “The Lost Kingdom” ended up making just $4.5 million in Thursday previews and $27.7 million over the three-day weekend...

The winter holiday season can be a lucrative one at the box office, but this year's was on uncertain ground. 2021 brought us "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and 2022 brought us "Avatar: The Way of Water," both of which now rank amongst the highest-grossing movies in history. 2023 has no such clear-cut smash hit, with "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" ultimately disappointing in its opening frame. Luckily, another Warner Bros. movie has emerged to provide the Christmas box office with a much-needed jolt: "The Color Purple."
Directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, the musical adaptation of the classic book of the same name lit up the charts on Christmas Day, taking in a massive $18.1 million, per The Numbers. That made it easily the number one movie of the holiday ahead of "The Lost Kingdom" ($10.6 million) and "Wonka" ($10.3 million). Interestingly, all three of these are Warner Bros. releases.

Blitz Bazawule could care less about The Color Purple’s recent award nominations. The film’s director isn’t worried about the movie-musical’s Best Picture snub at the Golden Globe or wowed by the musical’s five Critics Choice nominations and three mentions on the Oscars’ shortlist for its music. He understands the significance of such accolades, but says he prefers to focus on how viewers will receive the Broadway musical adaptation.
“I honestly do not pay attention to any of it,” Bazawule tells Rolling Stone, the day the Critics Choice nominations were announced.

Introducing Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, ‘The Color Purple’s’ Young Celie: ‘This Is Work I Was Meant to Do’
Turning 30 is always a memorable moment, but “The Color Purple” actor Phylicia Pearl Mpasi rang in her third decade with a birthday serenade from Oprah Winfrey.
Coincidentally, Mpasi’s birthday (November 16) fell on another special occasion: the first screening of the musical reimagining of “The Color Purple.” The atmosphere was charged with anticipation since this was the debut of the film before critics and press, but the mood backstage was particularly jovial since it was the first time the cast — Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and Mpasi, as well as Winfrey, producer Scott Sanders and director Blitz Bazawule — had assembled since wrapping production in 2022. But there was an extra element of emotion for Mpasi, since “The Color Purple” marks her feature film debut.
