Exclusive: Emmy and Academy Award nominated producer David Permut and filmmaker Oscar Boyson are teaming up with author/filmmaker Mathew Klickstein to bring the San Diego Comic-Con origin story to life for the first time on screen in a new documentary based on the latter’s book See You at San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture.
The See You at San Diego documentary will follow how a scrappy group of teenage fans, zinesters, illustrators, stoners, hippies, weirdoes, bookworms, and science buffs in the late 1960s joined forces with an unemployed thirtysomething comic fan to create what has now become one of the most influential pop culture events ever. San Diego Comic-Con has twice been recognized as the largest pop culture gathering worldwide by the Guinness Book of World Records in recent years.

Exclusive: Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films have closed a deal to finance and produce a feature-length version of Power Signal — the sci-fi short from Oscar Boyson that had its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Shorts section last Friday.
The short stars Babs Olusanmokun (Dune) as a NYC delivery worker who has a close encounter with an otherworldly life form after accepting a degenerate customer’s bizarre proposition. Boyson directed the pic, also starring Angela Sarafyan, Tennessee King and Will Brill, from his and Erin DeWitt’s script, also producing with Jordan Drake, Alex Coco, and production companies Object & Animal and Hayden 5.
Like the short, the feature adaptation is described as a NYC-set sci-fi Western in which e-biking delivery workers are the cowboys. Further plot details are under wraps.

We’ll call Two Against Nature the Bermuda Triangle of all our Sundance guesses. An indie comedy that was backed by a talented bunch and one that employed the celluloid extraordinaire services in Sean Price Williams has dropped out of sight since it went into production back in November 2017. What we do know is that Maria Dizzia (she closes out the excellent Christine) toplines and, Josh Pais, Daniel Zolghadri and Matthew Maher are also set. Owen Kline who was a child actor in The Squid and the Whale both wrote and directed the project.

"Who are all these people?" Nothing like a funny short film set in a romantic city to brighten up your day! Ciao Lola is a short comedy made by producer / filmmaker Oscar Boyson, running only six minutes in total. It was filmed in Venice back in 2016, and is now available to watch online. The short stars Jane Levy as Lola and Thomas McDonell as Peter, a couple visiting the gorgeous Italian city. There's some unexplained subtext to this that isn't implicit, but you'll figure it out as it goes along. I like the playfulness of this, and all the lovely shots of Venice. Enjoy! Adam Sandler is officially making a movie with Josh and Benny Safdie. Deadline confirms the actor will lead “Uncut Gems,” the latest feature from the indie film duo behind “Heaven Knows What” and last year’s critical darling “Good Time.” The casting marks the second Safdie feature in a row to star a prominent actor in the lead role. Robert Pattinson played the lead in “Good Time” and earned some of the best reviews of his career for the performance.
Plot specifics for “Uncut Gems” are being kept under wraps, although the film is set in New York City’s diamond district. The screenplay was written by the Safdie brothers and their regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein. A24 is backing the drama after the company’s success with the Safdies on “Good Time” last summer. Producers include Scott Rudin and Eli Bush through Scott Rudin Produtions and Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson through Elara Pictures.

The current trend in Hollywood goes a little something like this if you haven’t got an original idea lets just stick a remake no one asked for onto the schedule. This time around Paramount has commissioned a remake of the 1982 48 Hours.

“Good Time” filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie have chosen their next project, and it’s a bit of a doozy. The Queens-bred filmmaking duo will helm a remake of “48 Hours,” the 1982 crime comedy starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, Josh Safdie confirmed to IndieWire. “The Carmichael Show” co-creator and star Jerrod Carmichael will co-write the script.
“48 Hours” was an early addition to the buddy cop genre, and an early big screen success for Murphy. The odd couple comedy tells the story of a cop (Nolte) and a convict (Murphy) who team up to catch a pair of cop-killers. The title refers to the fact that Murphy’s character, a former cop serving time for armed robbery, is released from prison for 48 hours in order to help solve the murders. The movie was originally directed by the illustrious Walter Hill (“The Warriors”), produced by Joel Silver, and starred James Remar and Annette O’Toole.

Just a few short hours ago, the precursor season kicked off this morning for 2017 with the nominations for the 27th annual Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards. Yes, we’ve reached that point in the year. Precursors will begin trickling in, starting to establish early frontrunners. Leading off is the Ifp Gotham Independent Film Awards, which will give us an idea of which indies are contenders, as opposed to just pretenders. This won’t be the last word on them, by any stretch, but it is the first word, and that’s something to take note of. Gotham is beginning a run that will ultimately end up at the Academy Awards in March. As you’ll see below, Get Out led the field with four nominations, followed by Call Me By Your Name, Columbus, The Florida Project, and Lady Bird with three apiece. There was also Good Time, I, Tonya, and Mudbound among multiple nominees,...

With sold out screenings, ticket buyers lining up early, and fans going to rewatch the movie multiple times, describing the magic of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to those who have never seen a "Star Wars" movie in their life is a bit hard to explain. Last night, the 25th annual Gotham Awards held their ceremony in New York City and made an early claim to setting the precursor tone. As often the first group to not only put out nominations but announce their winners, they more or less can establish very early frontrunners when the titles in contention are already Oscar hopefuls. That’s the case this year, as films like Carol, Grandma, I’ll See You in My Dreams, Love & Mercy, Room, and Spotlight were already Academy Award players. Spotlight turned out to be the main victor last night, winning in every category it was nominated in, so if you believe in momentum, the early momentum decidedly favors it, with other precursors still to come this week, and even later on today. The big winner, of course, was Spotlight, as the movie took Best Feature, Best Screenplay for Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer, as...

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.Scroll down for full list of nominations
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly...

Brothers Josh and Benny Safdie have wrapped principal photography on their follow-up to Lenny Cooke.
Heaven Knows What marks the filmmakers’ first non-documentary feature since Daddy Longlegs in 2010 and stars Arielle Holmes.
The youngster plays a fictionalised version of herself in the story of a street kid whom the Safdies met on the subway.
Caleb Landry Jones also stars in the tale of a young homeless couple in love battling addiction on the streets of New York.
The Safdies (pictured) co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bronstein. The film is a coproduction between Iconoclast Films and fledgling Elara Pictures, which the Safdies established with Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson.
