Daniel Radcliffe won’t be competing against his Merrily We Roll Along Broadway co-star Jonathan Groff for a Tony Award next June, and the reason has nothing to do with performance quality: The awards administration committee ruled today that Radcliffe will be eligible in the featured performer category, apparently leaving the lead category to Groff.
Lindsay Mendez, who plays Mary Flynn, the musical’s most prominent female character, will, like Radcliffe, who plays Charley Kringas, be eligible in the featured slot (the Tony’s equivalent to Oscar’s “supporting” categories).
While Groff’s character of Franklin Shepard has traditionally been considered the main character of the Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical, this year’s hit Maria Friedman-directed revival included the three stars’ names above the title, leaving some wiggle room with regard to the category decisions.
Indeed, audience members might be hard-pressed to decide which actor goes where: While...

Once Upon a One More Time will play its final Broadway performance Sept. 3.
The musical, which features the songs of Britney Spears and a storyline about fairytale princesses in search of enlightenment, began preview performances at the Marquis Theatre on May 13 and opened June 22. Spears approved the musical and suggested its initial themes. She also signed an underlying rights agreement with the show, which was notably one of the first deals Spears signed since a judge terminated her conservatorship.
The closing notice comes as the musical failed to catch on with critics and with Broadway audiences, with the show reporting capacities in the 50 percent range for the past seven weeks. In the last publicly reported week of grosses, ended Aug. 13, the musical grossed its lowest eight-performance week yet, bringing in $512,008.
Producers James. L Nederlander and Hunter Arnold said there are currently plans underway for a national tour and international productions of the show,...

Hit me, Britney, one more time? In 2005, the Lady of the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot lamented, “I’m constantly replaced by Britney Spears.” These days, a lot of composers trying to get their scores onto Broadway stages could sing the same lyric: Spears’s music burst onto Broadway in Moulin Rouge in 2019 (“Toxic” appears in a mashup alongside Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance”) and five of her songs appear in the jukebox musical & Juliet, including “…Baby One More Time,” “Oops!…I Did It Again,” and “Stronger.”
All four of those songs feature in the first all-Britney musical, Once Upon a One More Time, a frivolously delightful entry into the jukebox genre. Even though recent Broadway seasons have brought pro forma biographical musicals like Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Mj, and A Beautiful Noise, there’s been far greater pleasure in shows like Moulin Rouge, & Juliet, and the delirious...

Bad Cinderella could have been the poison apple that killed off revisionist fairy tales once and for all, but Britney Spears and Once Upon A One More Time, the new Broadway musical opening tonight that brims with her hits and high spirits, has come along to deliver a happy ever after that’s as unexpected as it is enchanting. Smart, funny, splendid to look at and all with a beat you can dance to, this tribute to the Brothers Grimm, the sisters of the Second Wave and, not least, the indomitable Ms. Spears, is a delight.

Once Upon A One More Time is one of the first Britney Spears-backed projects following the termination of her 13-year conservatorship.
Helmed by directors and choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, with an original story by Jon Hartmere, the musical comedy is slated to open on June 22 at the Marquis Theater and will feature hits like “Oops I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Circus” and “Toxic.”
Ahead of its Broadway run, Once Upon a One More Time attempted a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago beginning in 2019. Initially set for the James M. Nederlander Theatre in October, it would be delayed, and the opening rescheduled for April 2020. But in March, the pandemic shut down the theater industry, with the show’s producers eventually deciding to cancel the planned engagement altogether.

This bodes well for Drew Dunbar’s kidney transplant: CBS has renewed Chuck Lorre’s B Positive for Season 2, TVLine has learned. Additionally, the Eye network has renewed Lorre’s other freshman sitcom, United States of AI, for a second season.
B Positive centers on the aforementioned Drew (played by Silicon Valley‘s Thomas Middleditch), a therapist and newly divorced dad who is faced with needing a kidney donor. He soon reconnects with Gina Dabrowski (Masters of Sex‘s Annaleigh Ashford), a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past who volunteers her own.

B Positive will be on the CBS schedule for a bit longer.
The freshman comedy has nabbed a full season order at CBS, becoming one of few shows to pull off such a move in that pandemic-affected season.
While the show has been expanded, no details on how many episodes have actually been ordered.
ABC's Big Sky recently got a six-episode back-order, keeping it around for 16 episodes.
However, that show is heavily serialized, meaning that fewer episodes were probably a part of a commitment between the creatives and the network.
B Positive Season 1 is averaging 5 million viewers and a 0.56 rating in the all-important 18-49 demo.
The series, which hails from Chuck Lorre, is holding up well in its Thursday slot and pulling in decent enough ratings to stick around.
B Positive was the only completed broadcast pilot ahead of this season due to the Covid-19 shutdowns that plagued the industry.

A successful sitcom boils down to two things: characters and chemistry. Even the most inspired premise doesn’t matter after the first few episodes, if the show doesn’t have characters we care about and actors who work well together. Case in point: CBS’ new fall sitcom B Positive, debuting this Thursday, Nov. 5 at 8:30/7:30c. (I’ve seen the first two episodes.) It has an admittedly odd premise and does fall into certain CBS sitcom pitfalls along the way, but it’s redeemed by stars Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford, who make a stellar comedic duo right away.

With the WGA-Ata war fully raging, diversity discussions at the forefront of the industry and numerous new rivals entering the original-content game, there is arguably more pressure than ever on the broadcast networks to make the right call when it comes to pilot pickups.
Here’s what Variety’s insiders are saying about this season’s offerings.
ABC
On the comedy front, three female-led pilots look to charge ahead at ABC.
An untitled Hannah Simone project has enjoyed support within ABC from the start. Simone’s “Greatest American Hero” pilot at ABC last year was ultimately passed over, but she still has many supporters at the network.
Another hot prospect comes from writer Jessica Gao, fresh off an Emmy win for her work on “Rick and Morty.” Hopes for the untitled pilot are bolstered not only by Gao’s recent success but also by Brian Grazer serving as exec producer.

Exclusive: CBS’ comedy pilot To Whom It May Concern is recasting one of the series regular roles opposite Michael Angarano and Briga Heelan. Rules of Engagement alum Adhir Kalyan will play Tanner in the hybrid comedy from Gail Berman’s The Jackal Group, and CBS TV Studios. He replaces Raymond Ablack, who originally was cast in the role.
A decision was made during production week to take the character in a slightly reimagined direction, leading to the recasting. It is part of the normal pilot creative process that involves script and cast tweaks.
Written by Mike Metz, directed by Mark Cendrowski and showrun by Joseph Port and Joe Wiseman, To Whom It May Concern centers on Evan (Angarano) who, with the help of his group of friends, sets out to accomplish a list of challenges he wrote for himself years ago in an effort to turn around his banal life.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Season 6 Episode 8, “He Said, She Said.”]
While the #MeToo era is, at this point, well-established, many TV shows are still trying to figure out the best ways to address the issues raised — and also, for comedies, be funny at the same time. Given that “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has already tackled issues like racial profiling, Lgbtq issues, and police corruption, the machinery was in place to delve into sensitive topics, and so this week’s episode, “He Said, She Said,” was able to take it on head-first.
The episode, marking the directorial debut of series star Stephanie Beatriz, doesn’t start off as a story about subtleties — the Nine-Nine is called to investigate an incident at a “Wolf of Wall Street”-esque firm where a broker ended up with a broken penis. He says his female co-worker “flipped out”; she says he was trying to assault her and she retaliated.

It was only a matter of time before the #MeToo movement emerged from behind the scenes to our screens. In fact, so many in and out of Hollywood are grappling with a seismic cultural shift surrounding sexual violence — or, at the very least, a new urgency to meaningfully address it — that it might have felt disingenuous if TV and film hadn’t acknowledged it somehow.
For the most part, TV’s takes on #MeToo have been limited to dramas that have leaned into the weighty gravitas of this reckoning. Shows like “The Good Fight” and “The Romonoffs” weighed the rights of the accusers and accused, to varying degrees of success. Comedies that dip their toes into the murky waters — including “Glow” and the “Murphy Brown” revival — tend to drop the punchlines in order to focus on the severity of the incidents, letting the stark contrast to their usual rhythms speak volumes.

Great News got bad news from its network today. NBC has canceled the workplace/family comedy starring Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin after two seasons.
Created by 30 Rock alumna Tracey Wigfield and exec produced by 30 Rock creator Tina Fey, the series had a modestly rated run in midseason 2017. The comedy clinched a renewal, largely based on Fey’s clout at NBCUniversal, with help from largely positive reviews. With Fey stepping in for a guest arc to help jump-start the show, Great News was given a plum Season 2 slot behind Will & Grace on Thursday but did not show improvement and did not get a back order.
The comedy’s 13-episode sophomore run ended in January.

“Great News” has been canceled after two seasons at NBC.
The comedy series is set in the world of television news, centering around an up-and-coming news producer, played by Briga Heelan, who finds herself dealing with a new intern — her mother, played by Andrea Martin. The series also starred Adam Campbell, Nicole Richie, Horatio Sanz, Tracey Wigfield, and John Michael Higgins. Executive producer Tina Fey also appeared in Season 2.
The show was renewed last year despite lackluster ratings for its first season. Season 1 averaged a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers in Live+Same Day, with Season 2 dropping to a 0.7 and 3 million.
