The Marvels? Were they a Berry Gordy group or a Phil Spector one? Neither! It’s the name of an upcoming chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its first teaser trailer has just been released.
Longbox-owning nerds already know that there have been multiple characters who have held the title of Captain Marvel, and this movie has found a way to bring them all together. In a three-way “Freaky Friday” scenario, Brie Larson’s (star of 2019’s “Captain Marvel”), Teyonah Parris (who co-starred in Disney+’s “WandaVision”), and Iman Vellani of “Ms. Marvel” are somehow connected, and when any of them use their powers—poof!—they swap bodies to zip across time and space. This being just a teaser trailer, the specifics of their conflict (beyond the displacement) remain a little vague, but one thing that’s certain is that it will include a lot of action.

Summer is here in full force, and whenever the kids aren't busy with the various demands of their camps and sports and "don't let them slide" school assignments, it's nice to just kick back and relax for a while. This week's picks are courtesy of my three kids, who yelled "stop!" every time I scrolled onto a movie they wanted to see on the various instant watch queues.
Rated G Pick: "Mulan" (1998, 87 minutes)

Kids Will Love: My 5-year-old son isn't a big fan of all the Disney Princesses, but he loves Mulan, because she's not just waiting around for her prince to sweep her off to happiness. Mulan is smart, brave, has impressive sword skills, and a guardian dragon. What could be better than that? And yes, she does have a romance, but it's not the focus of the story.

Super 8 brought in $37 million this weekend for a respectable first weekend. It didn't open to huge blockbuster numbers, but could still do well in the coming weeks with viewer word of mouth recommendation and awesome reviews (check out our Super 8 review).
The final box office numbers were comparable to other sci-fi flicks, such as Abram's Cloverfield, which brought in about $40 million its opening weekend.
The other new film to hit the box office was Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. The film hailed some star power with Heather Graham, but other than that was relying mostly on pre-teens who read the popular Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald.
The film grossed $6.3 million at the box office and ended up in 7th place, despite dismal reviews. We actually enjoyed the film, check out our Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer review for our take on film.

J.J. Abrams movie is only non-sequel in the top five.

"Super 8" took the #1 spot at the box office over the weekend. The film's $37 million opening isn't on par with recent summer blockbusters, but it did beat studio expectations, according to reports. And "Super 8" bears the distinction of being the only non-sequel in the weekend's top five.
The "Super 8" marketing campaign employed many of the tactics used to promote 2008's "Cloverfield," which was produced by "Super 8" writer/ director J.J. Abrams. The movie stars a cast of relative unknowns and features a plot that was largely kept hidden in the trailers. Abrams devised "Super 8" as something of an homage to the work of Steven Spielberg, who served as producer.
Reviews have been largely positive. "For all its obvious touches of Spielbergia, 'Super 8' feels a whole...

It might be a stretch to call its opening “super,” but the sci-fi flick Super 8 enjoyed a solid start with $37 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. The $50 million movie, which was directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, fell just a bit short of other recent original sci-fi flicks such as District 9 ($37.4 million) and the Abrams-produced Cloverfield ($40.1 million), but performed better than this year’s Battle: Los Angeles ($35.6 million). With a story that’s set in 1979 and a tone that emulates Spielberg’s own pictures during that era, the well-reviewed film particularly appealed to older moviegoers.

"Jj Abrams imitates to flatter with Super 8, an homage to the seminal science fiction films of Steven Spielberg that succumbs to empty nostalgic pandering," argues Nick Schager in Slant. "As with his Star Trek, Abrams's latest puts a modern spin on classical material, though here reinvention isn't the goal so much as slavish duplication embellished with muscular CG effects. It's akin to returning to a cinematic womb of Spielbergian father-son issues, suburban households under extraterrestrial strain, and teen romance, friendship, and maturation via out-of-this-world circumstances. The effect of such a modus operandi is initial coziness quickly giving way to disheartening familiarity, with Abrams's own preoccupations (if he had any to begin with) becoming subsumed beneath the root themes,...

Hey, Hollywood, guess what? Not giving away the kitchen sink in the trailers actually works! Or at least, that’s the lesson we’ve learned this weekend after J.J. Abrams’ secretive sci-fi movie “Super 8″ took the top spot at the box office with a better than expected $37 million dollar opening, according to studio estimates. The $50 million movie entered theaters without any stars that includes a mostly unknown kid cast, with only writer/director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg as its marquee names. But that didn’t stop the film from turning in a good (but not great) $12 million on Fridays, only to do even better on Saturday with $14 million. Of course, it helped that “Super 8″ didn’t have any real competition this weekend, with the only other major studio release being Relativity’s “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer”, based on the series of books by Megan McDonald.

To absolutely no one's surprise, Hollywood has plumbed the vacuous depths of the children's lit market and come up with yet another hopeful franchise. Obviously, author Megan McDonald meant for her girl with the tangled red hair, the so-called "heroine" of the Judy Moody book series, to evoke aspects of both Pippi Longstocking and Ramona Quimby. This adaptation, directed by John Schultz (who helmed the similarly frenetic Aliens in the Attic), manages to stuff a whole lot of turbulent action into this movie despite the fact that there's nothing going on in the process. It's not even loosely controlled -- it's completely uncontrolled and exceedingly loud to boot. For the simple reason that it's not only a very boring movie but also a very shrill one, adults will positively despise Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. Kids will tolerate it well enough, but they won't get anything out if it either.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is based off the children's series by Megan McDonald and they are extremely popular among young girls. Now Judy Moody is on screen in real-sized technicolor and she is winning over hearts everywhere.
If you aren't familiar with the book series, it's probably because you don't have a young girl in your house. But you're not alone. I hadn't read any of the books before seeing this film and it doesn't matter. It's fun, vibrant, energetic, and full of life.
Australian newcomer Jordana Beatty plays the spunky, fun-loving Judy Moody with great spirit and amazing energy. Sometimes a little too much energy! Doesn't she ever get tired?
The books mainly take place during school, but this feature film finds Judy out of the classroom and trying to have the best summer ever.
She soon learns that it might be a lot harder than she had originally planned.

When John Schultz was in elementary school, his favorite classroom activity was when the teacher would hand out a vocabulary list of 20 words and he would have to write a story that employed all of them. "I loved that challenge of here's what you have to work with. Make it work," Schultz said.
It shouldn't be all that surprising then that the director is making his third indie feature, but it is refreshing that with this week's "Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer," he's aiming to entertain today's elementary school kids by working in the indie world's least prolific genre, the family film. Oddly, in the considerably more ungoverned area of the medium that's wide open to personal coming-of-age stories and cinematic anarchy, few are made with the intention of appealing to all audiences.
Less unusual has been Schultz's career path, though it still might strike some as peculiar.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer
Directed by: John Schultz
Cast: Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller, Jaleel White
Running Time: 1 hr 31 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: June 10, 2011
Plot: A young girl (Beatty) determined to have the best summer ever, creates a system that awards her with thrill points whenever she does something different and exciting.
Who’S It For?: Kids who like poop jokes will get a few bits of imagination sprinkled into their entertainment diet, but the amount is underwhelming considering the movie’s potential. As for me, my inner-child and outer-adult were both bored by the movie midway through, once it lost its spark as something creative and instead became something dull.
Expectations: Especially with its grammatical toying, this one looked pretty silly. But what does a “not bummer summer” constitute? Hopefully this movie would encourage creativity both with and within the movie. And possibly...

Jordana Beatty shows plenty of charisma but Not Bummer Summer is a dull adventure. Chicago – Films based on children’s book series can’t all be good. The law of averages eventually catches up to the literary moppets who turn their charms towards the big screen. Case in point, the below average “Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.”

The film is all sticky, cutesy poo (literally) that is as welcome this summer as a mosquito at a barbecue. Strangely cast in the film is Heather Graham, as free-spirited Aunt Opal, acting much as she did when she shed her clothing as Rollergirl in “Boogie Nights.” And the hyper-caffeinated Judy Moody is stuck in overdrive through Jordana Beatty’s performance, a child actor least likely to evolve to a post adolescent career.

So here’s a philosophical question for modern cinephiles: Is it a positive development that the Manic Pixie Dream Girl is moving on to new spheres by appearing in movies other than mopey modern indie dramas, or exasperating that the stereotype is not only persisting, but expanding? In Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, the title tween and her little brother, Stink, set out to have a thrilling summer. Does the movie have any thrills for the audience? Apparently not.
"...the film is so airless (think iCarly as a videogame) that there isn't a truly playful moment in it."
— Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
"Crap figures prominently throughout Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer. It's also one way of describing this adaptation of the Megan McDonald book series..."

"Megan McDonald’s third-grade spitfire Judy Moody makes her moody leap from the page to the big screen with much of the spit, if not her fire, intact."
— Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel
"While Graham charms as the artsy eccentric, newcomer Beatty overdoes it with the pop-eyed energy of a preteen Miley Cyrus. And the high-pitched, candy-colored comedy tries too hard to be fun."
