Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

As Porky Pig so famously put it, “Th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks!”
Ok, not really. For the Idoloonie Nation, we haven’t even gotten to the thrilling parts of American Idol‘s farewell season — the live shows, where the red plastic husk of the jokesters and the delusional are tossed aside, and we get to binge on the delicious goudas and bries and provolones who comprise the Top 12. (Ok, sorry… that cheese metaphor went on a little too long, but it’s the inevitable result of snacking primarily on celery and carrots for the last two weeks.)

"American Idol" just unleashed its final season preview. It should touch you. You get just the right glimpses of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Phillips, and a few other winners who filled you with strange, hopeful glee all those years ago. You remember most of the big names of the series. But there are some others you should recall too. Here are our five favorite underrated performances in the show's history. 1. Katelyn Epperly, "The Scientist" (Season 9) Ellen DeGeneres was doomed as a panelist when she declared this rendition "too slow." Iowa native Katelyn Epperly made Coldplay's "The Scientist" a proper ballad with this hushed rendering. She gets better and better as she goes along, adding color and dynamic. I 2. Didi Benami, "Play With Fire" (Season 9) Didi Benami triumphed (and kind of failed) in a number of rad ways here. What I love: She picked a song meaningful to her,...

We've just learned the exhilarating news that "Survivor" has posted a list of 32 potential veterans who are eligible to come back for a "Second Chance" season. Does the name "Kelly Wiglesworth" still send shivers of excitement through your spine as if reality TV is a new and burgeoning genre full of utopian possibilities, including Richard Hatch's financial stability? Well, it should. It's hard to pick the absolute best reality contestant who didn't win his/her particular season. Parvati comes to mind during the season of Sandra's second victory, but it's almost never the #1 player who wins that show. I think you have to look at "American Idol" for the greatest competitors who never became voter favorites. I'm a big fan of season 9 tenth-place finisher Didi Benami, season seven star Carly Smithson, and -- my #1 favorite contestant ever -- season six third-place finisher Melinda Doolittle. She took the soppiest...

Tonight's them is (I'm With The) Band. I have no clue what that means. Fox not-so-helpfully explains that the singers "will act as the lead singer for Rickey Minor and his band, performing their favorite songs." How is that different from what happens every week? Or does it just mean that Minor won't actively attempt to sabotage the performers like he's been doing all season long? Sigh. Click through and follow along with the fun. 8:00 p.m. Et. Everybody loves the judges, doncha know? Mostly J-Lo. Her fashion performances this season have been more interesting than anything done by most of the contestants. 8:03 p.m. Ah. The band is going to be on-stage. J-Lo has regrets about losing M.K. last week. Harry Connick Jr. says that the decision to use the Save is a spontaneous thing. 8:04 p.m. To kill time, we're experiencing the quality time...

In case you need a legitimate reason to check out the thirteenth season of American Idol, here’s one: This is the first season where none of the judges are embarrassed by one other.
Think about it. From seasons one to eight, Simon Cowell rolled his eyes at Paula Abdul, who was usually rolling her eyes on accident. In season nine, Ellen DeGeneres winced at all of Simon’s callous remarks as if they were stains on her syndication-friendly reputation. In seasons ten and eleven, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson giggled in terror whenever your great aunt Steven Tyler purred at female contestants. In season 12, the whole panel refrained from weeping when Mariah Carey would attempt legitimate criticisms and instead wind up reciting Jacqueline Bisset‘s entire Golden Globes speech.
But finally, with the new lineup of Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and returnee Keith Urban, the mix is mysteriously perfect.

Wuh-oh. Looks like a few of our favorite could-be-homosexuals tripped in their character shoes this week.
The catalog of Lennon and McCartney provides ample opportunity for Idol singers to prove they can do artistic things like warble the lyrics to "Come Together" with a straight face or care about the plight of Father McKenzie. Please! Paul Jolley don't have time for that! He's too busy "woodshedding" with my boy Devin, hopefully.
How did the kids do this week? Let's rank the rubber-souled scamps from #9 to #1.
9. Lazaro Arbos, "In My Life"
Well, my prophecy is coming true: The worse Lazaro does, the more gorgeous he gets. And this week he was absolutely terrible/stunning! Wearing a primary yellow blazer that Samantha Jones might bring to a business-casual orgy, Lazaro took to the stage with those trembling, all-too-wet pupils and basically murmur-whispered "In My Life" in a funereal drone. I love American Idol, and therefore I can't stand when certain kickass Idol performances are forgotten years later. Here are eight you should keep close to your heart and voice box.
1. Von Smith, "You're All I Need" (season 8)
The ultra-talented Von Smith had the misfortune of auditioning for American Idol during season eight, the year when the Top 36 was slashed down to a Top 13 using a dubious voting system. It didn't help that folks like Adam Lambert and Alexis Grace (!) were endlessly touted before the Top 36, making their inclusion in the Top 13 almost inevitable compared to their little-seen competitors. Von's voice speaks -- nay, soars! -- for itself. So grand and crystal clear, and if I do say so myself, better than 99% of the vocalists we've heard on the show since.
2. Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper, "Time After Time" (season 8)

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Reality TV judging: It’s important. I can only commit to a TV talent show if I believe there are tough, fair-minded judges keeping the circus under control. Since we’re headlong into enticing seasons of The Voice and American Idol, the time is right to reflect upon the best judges in reality TV history – the ones who boast authority, smarts, sass, and fearsomeness. Oh, and some evil too!

So about American Idol, my favorite hyper-manipulated talent cotillion: It's the best. Every season I find a singer worth defending (season 10's Didi Benami!), another to dread (season 8's Danny Gokey!), and a huge machine of obvious bias. I'm always outraged and panicked and hooked, and this year is no exception. I'll be recapping the eleventh season from here on in, and I'm dying to get to Top 24 week when the real blood flies, the feeble acoustic princesses shatter on live TV, and Ryan Seacrest responds to it all with a moon-colored TV grin that only the flawless alien mothership that created Seacrest could love.

In last week’s battle round, The Voice paired unlikely opponents — too unlikely, if you ask me. So who prevailed? Who took a tumble in the oversize boxing ring of improbable dreams? We're down to the Top 3 on "American Idol" and as such, we are back up to two full hours of programming. Each Idol gets three songs - one judges' choice, one Jimmy Iovine choice and one personal choice. Oh and it's hometown visit time. There's a lot going on tonight.
Before we jump into anything, the judges come out and J.Lo and Steven are appropriately sparkly, while Randy is rocking his Hogwarts outfit again. Though I really think he's more of a Hufflepuff than a Ravenclaw.
When the Idols emerge, Lauren looks like a space cowgirl hooker. The other two look nice. The mentor for the Contestants' Choice round is Beyonce, which is cool. Do you think Scotty will have his crucifix on hand, just in case Sasha Fierce comes out?
Instead of the normal ranking, I thought we'd play Simon Cowell tonight and pick a winner from each round.

With only five weeks remaining in American Idol‘s tenth season, hard questions still outnumber firm answers: Are the show’s producers putting their weight behind James Durbin? What could possibly stop season-long front-runners Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina from advancing to the final three? Is Casey Abrams a versatile and risk-taking performer, or a growling ham who doesn’t know enough to stick to what he does best? What can Haley Reinhart do to avoid her weekly flirtation with elimination? What is the deal with Jacob Lusk’s on-the-brink-of-crying performance style? And am I really wearing a #SignPiaToscano t-shirt?...

Sitting through American Idol‘s Top 8 results-show telecast was kind of like going to a modern-day multiplex where your every whim can be satisfied. There was the animated tearjerker about the bright-eyed woodland creature who’d been in captivity too long and yearned to escape to wide open spaces. There was the horror flick about the (sexy) zombie who refused to die. There was the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-esque thriller about a kick-ass heroine overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And there was even a sweet teen romance — or was it supposed to be a brother-and-sister comedy? — with a somewhat muddled marketing campaign.

At Reality Rocks 2011, the "American Idol" panel touched on a lot of different topics; highlights can be found here. But we thought one subject that came up deserved to be singled out - the subject of blogs.
Moderator Shirley Halperin asked Season 9 contestants Didi Benami, Katie Stevens, Michael Lynche, Tim Urban and Paige Miles if they read the blogs (which they are advised not to do) and how it affected them.
Tim Urban, who blogs were not particularly kind to during their season, says, "You realize that the blogs are there just to pick apart your performance. They're not there to say what you did well, they're just there to point out what you did bad."
We aren't sure we totally agree with that assessment. When we recap the show here at Zap2it, we try to mention the good and the bad. As far as Tim Urban goes, we did criticize him quite often,...

Well, we have our Top 13 and we've all had a little time to accept it. From this group of individuals, there shall arise a chosen one. He or she may not be the next American Idol, for they will be chosen arbitrarily, by Ryan Seacrest, as the contestant who will receive just a little extra attention.
Last year it was Didi Benami. Ryan just couldn't stop touching her, holding her hand, leading her around the stage -- he was drunk with power. Some people think that because he's dating Julianne Hough now, Ryan won't touch anyone, but in Season 7 he chose David Cook, whatever that means. This year's Top 13 seems particularly young, and particularly fiesty. Maybe, recognizing the pattern, the contestants are taking their power back this year. After all, Lauren Alaina has already dubbed Ryan Seacrest, "Peaches," and Brett Loewenstern always hugs first.

Their wedding was in Chicago on Sunday, as a statement was issued by Bowersox's publicist: "Our lives have never made more sense than they do right now, I can't believe how incredibly lucky we are to have found so much laughter, love, and light within each other. We're one happy WalkerSox family." The gown for the nuptials was made of co-friendly cotton and hemp, decorated with seashells and macramé. Two weeks after announcing she was engaged, Crystal Bowersox has gotten married. The American Idol singer wed her beau, Brian Walker, yesterday in Chicago at the venue where they met at an open mic night six years ago. Though they’ve known each other for that long, they only just struck up a romance this summer and quickly took things to the next level. Bowersox Tweeted yesterday, forgetting her new identity temporarily “Officially mamasox!!!” and a few minutes later corrected herself “I meant walkersox!!!!! Hahaha that’s hillarious. :)” She and Walker were surrounded by about 60 friends at the ceremony including fellow Idol Top 10 performer Didi Benami and Bowersox’s son, Tony. Congratulations to the new family! [Photo: WENN]...

The ‘American Idol’ runner-up and her boyfriend of just a few months tie the knot in an intimate ceremony with guests including Didi Benami!
Crystal Bowersox may not have managed to win American Idol, but it looks like she got something even better Oct. 10 — she married musician boyfriend Brian Walker! People reports that the couple wed in Chicago, the hippie bride unsurprisingly in, “an Earth-friendly hemp and cotton gown from Vermont designer Tara Lynn that features macramé, seashell and bead detailing and was created in the designer’s solar-powered studio.” That sounds about right.
Among the 60 guests at the intimate ceremony were Crystal’s son Troy from a previous relationship, Idol contestant Didi Benami, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor Lance Barber.
The reception was to feature, “a laughing Buddha cake from Bleeding Heart Bakery, a local organic and sustainable business, and performances from the groom and several musician pals.

The United Center in Chicago played host to American Idol (TV)'s top ten Saturday night, with a hometown boy at the helm. Winner Lee DeWyze, who hails from suburban Mt. Prospect, Il. topped the list of Season 9 finalists who sang their way through a series of individual and group performances that had Idol fans chanting for their seasonal faves. The show followed it's traditional countdown format beginning with contestant number ten and working its way up to the winner. Opening the show was Didi Benami, whose second song, "Terrified" by Katharine McPhee out-did her first, Kyler England's "Lay it on Me." Andrew Garcia, a sentimental favorite during the show's run, received a warm reception from his camp as he stylistically toyed around with Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." At number 8 was Katie Stevens who wowed the boy crowd with a black rubber-like mini-dress and stiletto black boots. The raven-haired...

The "American Idol" Season 9 tour came to Los Angeles Friday, Aug. 13 and we got ourselves a ticket. Not a hard thing to do, since the concert was nowhere near sold out.
However, the Top 10 still gave an energetic show. At this point in the tour, when shows have already been canceled for lack of ticket sales, the enthusiasm is commendable.
Much like the season itself, the concert featured much stronger female performances than male ones.
Didi Benami kicked it off and it's actually kind of fortunate she went out first of the Top 10 because her "Terrified" was one of the best songs of the night. At least the concert opened strong, which would not have been the case if Andrew Garcia, Tim Urban or Aaron Kelly had hit the stage first.
Crystal Bowersox was the evening's penultimate soloist, but still manged to bring the house down. All four of her numbers -- "What's Up,...
