On Saturday night, the new Bee Gees documentary How Can You Mend a Broken Heart will debut on HBO. Directed by Frank Marshall, it tells the story of the group via archival videos and new interviews with Barry Gibb, Eric Clapton, Noel Gallagher, Nick Jonas, Chris Martin, Justin Timberlake, Lulu, and others.
Sadly, Barry Gibb is the only living member of the Bee Gees. He’s kept their music alive through solo tours, and his upcoming album, Greenfields, will reinterpret their songs with country acts like Keith Urban, Dolly Parton,...

If you’ve paid attention to my urgent, poetic recaps of American Idol, you know we’ve arrived at my favorite time of year: the live(-ish) semifinal where a couple dozen singers with edgy haircuts and/or edgy midriff-baring tops (or both, if you’re edgy-edgy Marrialle Sellars) beg you to dial things on their behalf. It’s the esteemed Top 30 round — or as I’ve long called it, The “How Can This Be The Best Of The Best When Everybody Was Forgettable, Nervous, and Named Something Stupid?” Round. My favorite.
But I didn’t count such a stupid gimmick creeping its way into the festivities. Though 15 women qualified to perform on Tuesday’s show, only 10 would be allowed on air thanks to a mysterious prescreening round where Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and Paul McCartney Disguised As Sheryl Crow In The “Soak Up the Sun” Video (a.k.

Next Wednesday (April 25), Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen will perform in a group number with the top 6 finalists on a Queen-themed performance show. Season 5, the year of Taylor Hicks, was the last time American Idol featured Queen songs. On next Thursday’s results show, the official touring Queen tribute, The Queen Extravaganza, will perform the classic hit “Somebody to Love.” Katy Perry and season 10 alum Stefano Langone will also appear. (Listen to Langone’s new single “On A Roll,” featuring New Boyz and Rock Mafia, at RyanSecrest.com.)

It was an American Idol season 9 reunion on Idol Hangover this week as winner Lee DeWyze, finalist and 2010 favorite Siobhan Magnus and special correspondent Didi Benami came together on the THR couch. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

We've come to the point in my Voice recaps where I admit that I'm tone-deaf. So tone-deaf. Almost aggressively tone-deaf. When Christina Aguilera gargles up a compliment like, "It was really the tone in your voice I was attracted to," I literally believe she's talking about nothing. (She's usually talking about nothing, which makes it confusing.) She's actually talking about something I can't hear, but I believe that gives me an advantage over her: I can tell you what the average, below-average American hears in these contenders. We'll call that a gift.
Anyway, The Voice breezed through more than a dozen auditioners last night. It was so hard to like many of them. Let's give 'em all letter grades and shoot this two-hour fiasco off a cliff.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

At the end of American Idol‘s Top 5 performance show, I wasn’t sure whether I should pick up my phone to text-message votes on behalf of Haley Reinhart or use it to dial 911. On one hand, I wanted to reward Haley for getting up on the Idol stage and delivering the single best musical moment of Season 10 — and a second performance that would probably rank only a few slots behind. Conversely, though, I had just witnessed the judges’ panel committing criminal acts of foolery, vandalism, and perjury — and I wanted them hurled headlong into Reality TV Prison to rot...

Wednesday night, the "American Idol" atmosphere was "electric" thanks to regal Oscar winners, Jacob Lusk crotch grabs and James Durbin's armpits. The producers had a fool-proof script banged out for our "enjoyment," which included the phrases "in it to win it," and "finding your perfect song." And the night's guest mentor told MSNBC back in 2007 that "['Idol'] undermines art in every way and promotes commercialism, I am sad people love it so."
In other words, this is "American Idol X: Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."
The theme was "Now & Then" which meant the contestants had two performances to rehearse. One was a current song (or in the case of Haley's to-be-released "Born This Way" deep cut, a future song) and round two was all about songs from the '60s. (Or, um, the '70s, if your name rhymes with Tames Surbin.)

On Thursday night, "American Idol" revealed the remainder of the season 10 Top 24, a collection of singer/songwriters, balladeers, scatters, divas, perky teens and belters that will compete to become the heir to Lee DeWyze's throne (perhaps he's not the best example, but let's move on).
Unlike previous seasons, this year's crop of contenders is long on talent, short on sob stories — Chris Medina's exit made sure of that. And while it's probably too early to say this, we could be looking at the most-gifted field of singers in "Idol" history (or at least since the epochal third season). So it would probably benefit you to get to know the field before the cruel cut-downs begin.

So, we have the first couple nights of American Idol behind us, and while we would now normally be discussing some of the more horrendous hopefuls, this year the talk is all about the new judges. It isn't that we don't have some "winner" contestants yet, but so far it seems they're making it to Hollywood. Good contestants or bad, the focus is on the judges, and a lot of people are going so far as to wonder if American Idol is simply over.
One of those new judges, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, took some time out to get on a conference call recently, and it was a pretty interesting time. On some notes, he didn't have much to say - He has more than a one year deal, but that's all he'll say about that - but, he had some good notes in terms of...

The United Center in Chicago played host to American Idol (TV)'s top ten Saturday night, with a hometown boy at the helm. Winner Lee DeWyze, who hails from suburban Mt. Prospect, Il. topped the list of Season 9 finalists who sang their way through a series of individual and group performances that had Idol fans chanting for their seasonal faves. The show followed it's traditional countdown format beginning with contestant number ten and working its way up to the winner. Opening the show was Didi Benami, whose second song, "Terrified" by Katharine McPhee out-did her first, Kyler England's "Lay it on Me." Andrew Garcia, a sentimental favorite during the show's run, received a warm reception from his camp as he stylistically toyed around with Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." At number 8 was Katie Stevens who wowed the boy crowd with a black rubber-like mini-dress and stiletto black boots. The raven-haired...

The "American Idol" Season 9 tour came to Los Angeles Friday, Aug. 13 and we got ourselves a ticket. Not a hard thing to do, since the concert was nowhere near sold out.
However, the Top 10 still gave an energetic show. At this point in the tour, when shows have already been canceled for lack of ticket sales, the enthusiasm is commendable.
Much like the season itself, the concert featured much stronger female performances than male ones.
Didi Benami kicked it off and it's actually kind of fortunate she went out first of the Top 10 because her "Terrified" was one of the best songs of the night. At least the concert opened strong, which would not have been the case if Andrew Garcia, Tim Urban or Aaron Kelly had hit the stage first.
Crystal Bowersox was the evening's penultimate soloist, but still manged to bring the house down. All four of her numbers -- "What's Up,...

Simon Cowell has thought of a new way to monetise his X Factor show. The music mogul is reportedly planning to release each performance made on the show this autumn and fans will be able to download the tracks from iTunes.
The plan would see the ITV singing show follow in the footsteps of American Idol. On the hit Fox show, weekly releases of the contestants songs regularly top the iTunes chart, as do live versions of the group performances from the results show.
An insider told The Daily Star that Simon Cowell is hoping to boost the incomes of his flagship show, by releasing the tracks this autumn.

If the top 10 contestants on this year's "American Idol" had anything to do with it, Harry Connick Jr. would be the man to take Simon Cowell's place next season.

By the time the "American Idol" finale rolled around on May 25, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox had spent over four months living in Los Angeles and performing at the Nokia Theatre. In that time, the finalists and the rest of the aspiring singers got to know each other in a sort of reality show commune: living in the same hotel, rehearsing together, hanging out.
They became a big family in many ways, and now they're about to embark on a giant road trip as the "American Idol" tour kicks off on July 1 outside Detroit. "American Idol" has announced that for Season 10, the age limit eligibility for auditions has dropped to 15 years old. Can that be considered an improvement? It depends on what the show wants to improve.
If the show is looking to improve its talent pool, we do not think lowering the age limit is the answer. In fact, raising the age limit is probably the way to go. Sure, there are pop stars like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus who made it big at a young age -- but those stars are so one-in-a-million that we are skeptical the show will find the next Bieber or Cyrus by lowering the age limit.
Instead, you'll get even more performers like Aaron Kelly -- a sweet young kid that felt all season like he was playing dress-up in his dad's closet. Kelly is definitely talented, but he seemed like a half-baked cookie. We would've...

Siobhan Magnus, a quirky girl from Massachusetts with a big voice, certainly brought her dramatic flair to season 9 of 'American Idol.'
Magnus was smoky and dark on Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Games,' hit an insane high note on Aretha Franklin's 'Think' and even got emotional on a cover of Whitney Houston's and Mariah Carey's 'When You Believe.'
Still, in our interview last week, Magnus kept mum on which songs she'll be singing during the Idols Live tour this summer, which officially kicks off Jul. 1 in Auburn Hills, Mi.
She did, however, give her thoughts on crying when she met her favorite band, Hanson, her crazy costume changes on tour, what inspires her to write angry songs and her weird choice for who should replace exiting 'Idol' judge Simon Cowell.

We Love this video of the American Idol final ten rehearsing a group number for their upcoming tour.
The group will be performing their own rendition of season one winner Kelly Clarkson’s hit track ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ and both Crystal Bowersox and Siobhan Magnus seem to have lead roles in the arrangement.
We loved the rapport between the group during their break and especially Lee DeWyze and Andrew Garcia’s little bit of breakdancing together. The version of the song is incredibly imaginative and the Idols sang it so well live, it makes us wonder why they were forced to lip synch their group performances every week on the show.
Check out the clip below and let us know what you think fo the song. The Idols hit the road on July 1st, their first show is in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The "American Idol" Top 10 contestants are hard at work preparing for their huge summer tour, but they let Zap2it interrupt their rehearsal today (June 17) to hang out. They even sang for us.
There was some confusion over where everyone would stand for the impromptu performance. Everyone wanted to stand next to Siobhan Magnus, but in the end, Lee DeWyze got the honor. (We guess there are some benefits to being the "American Idol" winner, though everyone swears he gets treated the same as the rest of them.)
We were treated to a performance of Season 1 "Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You." Don't worry, though -- they were sober, so their performance was much better than Clarkson's drunken rendition of Ke$ha's "Love is My Drug."
We loved it... especially when "Idol" roomies DeWyze and Andrew Garcia took a break to dance with each other.

Could Paula make it any more clear that she’s happy to say goodbye to Simon? She literally wrote that she wants to wash Simon’s “dirty laundry!”
It’s no secret that American Idol judges Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell have butted heads during their time together on the hit Fox show. But now that the two have parted ways, it looks like Paula is more than happy to wash Simon right out of her life — starting with his clothes! “Paula would like to wash his [Simon's] dirty laundry,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com exclusively June 13 at the 2010 Tony Awards Talent Gift Lounge in NYC, sponsored by LG Electronics.
“She said she would be done like that,” snapped our source.
But putting their disagreements aside, there’s one more factor putting Paula and Simon at odds — she’s jealous of his wardrobe! “I would kill for it,” Paula said to our source.

Season 9 "American Idol" eliminee Siobhan Magnus has never been shy about the fact that she's a huge fan of Hanson -- yes, the "Mmm-Bop" guys. (You know you loved them.) She's even got a line from one of their songs tattooed on her wrist.
Apparently, the admiration is mutual. Taylor Hanson invited Magnus to perform with him and his brothers Zac and Isaac at a secret midnight show in Los Angeles. Reality Rocks snuck into the rehearsals, where Siobhan fit in perfectly with the band because she'd "been practicing for 14 years."
"She showed up ready," Taylor says, adding that fans on the band's message board alerted them that Siobhan loved their music.
"Someone had written 'Did you see the girl with the Hanson sweatshirt at Hollywood week?'" Siobhan says, admitting that she checked out the forums as well. "And then someone posted, 'Well, if she's a Hanson fan, I...

To the delight of hair metal fans everywhere, this year’s American Idol final 12 reunited on stage last night alongside rock God, Alice Cooper.
Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus, Didi Benami, Paige Miles, Michael Lynche, Casey James, Tim Urban, Lee Dewyze, Lacey Brown, Andrew Garcia, Aaron Kelly and Katie Stevens gave a fiery rendition of Cooper’s 1972 hit ‘School’s Out’, resplendent in St Trinian type school uniforms and accompanied by a heavily made up children’s choir.
The group and Alice were later joined on stage by Orianthi, who kept her costume in theme and wore a sparkly school dress.
We don’t know who lost more credibility last night. American Idol for allowing decent yet intrinsically uninteresting singer Lee DeWyze to win, or Alice Cooper, who used to be a rock God but these days is looking like a bit of a sell out more and more. Leave your comments below.

Mama Sox was robbed last night – but even she had a feeling that her ‘musical crush’ Lee DeWyze was going to walk away with the top prize this season on American Idol
I am beyond disappointed by the American Idol season finale May 26, if only for the reason that my girl Crystal Bowersox lost by a 2% margin. Two Percent. Highway robbery! That said, I suspected all along that Lee DeWyze might steal her glory and apparently, so did she.
“I knew Lee was going to win,” the 24-year-old Elliston, Ohio native confided post-show. She didn’t seem upset and explained that, throughout this whole experience, her attitude has always been laid-back and laissez-faire. Whatever will be, will be.
“I learned a lot about myself,” she continued. “I feel like I won because Lee won, and I respect him as an artist.”
Amazing attitude, don’t you think?...

The top 6 girls from this year’s American Idol were joined onstage for last night’s finale last night, by pop singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera.
Lacey Brown, Didi Benami, Katie Stevens, Siobhan Magnus and Crystal Bowersox started by giving fiery renditions of Christina’s hit songs Fighter and Beautiful and by the end it was clear that Crystal Bowersox was putting the rest of the girls to shame. She was the only one that deserved to be on the stage last night. Her strong vocals contrasted starkly with the horribly out of tune ones accompanying her.
However, that all changed when Christina appeared. Helping the contestants finish ‘Fighter’ the ‘Genie In The Bottle’ singer then launched into an emotional performance of her newest single ‘You Lost Me.’ After the “Idol” audience gave her some rapturous applause and a standing ovation, it became clear that Aguilera still has it, despite all...

American Idol has its winner, and its the 24 year-old Illinois native Lee DeWyze.
Lee defeated Crystal Bowersox (who definitely did a better job on final performance night), to become the show's 9th champ. Lee hit a few roadblocks along the way, such as Seal's "Kiss from the Rose," but overall he coasted on a smooth ride to the finish line. As for Crystal, she found herself in Adam Lambert's shoes as the "runner-up who should have won but by not winning comes off that much cooler." While Lee has to release U2's "Beautiful Day" as a single, Crystal gets free reign. Can't wait to see what the mystical-mama conjures up.
The night was star-studded to say the least, with the surviving members off the Bee Gees, Joe Cocker, Hall and Oats and Christina Aguilera all showing up to give the contestants some credibility while losing a bit of credibilty,...

Watch Janet Jackson's 'American Idol' performance! R&B icon Janet Jackson made an appearance on Fox's hit reality series "American Idol" and peformed her latest single "Nothing" as well as her classic hit "Nasty Boys." Well, at least he’s a nice guy. Say what you want about Lee DeWyze winning American Idol (to my ears, Crystal Bowersox outperformed him the entire season), but at least the guy sincerely appreciated the love America showered upon him. Fox ended the finale telecast while Lee was still belting out U2′s “Beautiful Day,” which is too bad because the sweetest (as in, awww, that’s sweet) part of the show occurred right after his victory song. Lee, with mic still in hand, took a moment to personally thank the audience in the Nokia Theatre. “You have no...

Janet Jackson performed 'Nothing' & Nasty Boys on American Idol. R&B/pop icon Janet Jackson took to the "American Idol" stage earlier tonight on the season 9 finale show, and turned out the house by performing her latest song "Nothing" in a beautiful black, elegant dress (video below). Then once she got done singing that song, she walked to the back of the stage to do a silhouette change of clothing so she could perform her more uptempo classic hit, "Nasty Boys." It was an awesome performance. "American Idol" contestant Siobhan Magnus said that the whole crew didn't even know Janet was going to show up until she arrived for rehearsals earlier today.

"American Idol" has crowned its season 9 winner and for the third time in a row, it's a man's world. Lee DeWyze received the highest vote in the final, beating Crystal Bowersox although his performance night was not as lovable to the judge as Crystal's. Crystal cried but she looked genuinely happy for Lee and hugged him.

It was opened with the Top 12 performance singing Alice Cooper's "School's Out!" and the artist himself came out on stage to join the lots.
