Anxiety is high at the start of Jesse Noah Klein’s Like a House on Fire. We hear Dara (Sarah Sutherland) breathing heavily in the bathroom of a train car before finding her seat. From there it’s a taxi and the not so confident stroll to a house’s front door—the laughter of a child behind its barrier stopping her in her tracks and forcing her to run across the street and hide as her breathing grows heavier yet again. She lowers herself even further once Danny (Jared Abrahamson) and little Isabel (Margaux Vaillancourt) exit on their way to daycare. Only after some distance is created between them does Dara dare follow and wait for him to inevitably turn around and spark a confrontation two years in the making.

"The compassion of Klein's filmmaking rings true." Outsider Pictures and Strand Releasing has debuted a new trailer for We're Still Together, an indie drama from Montreal that originally debuted at festivals back in 2016. It's just now getting a direct-to-vod release in the Us after years of playing at festivals but no official release. The film is about an unlikely friendship between two lonely individuals - a manic single dad, and an overweight kid who can't get along with anyone. Starring Jesse Camacho and Joey Klein, with Brielle Robillard and Eve Harlow. This won the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Film at the New Hampshire Film Festival in 2016, and a few Actra Montreal Awards for the two lead performances. This looks heartbreakingly honest and moving, a film about how we all have issues yet friendship makes up for it. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Jesse Noah Klein's We're Still Together,...

“in finding each other, they begin to learn over the course of the film, how it is they should be communicating…” – Jesse Noah Klein
Selected in Competition at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and beginning its theatrical release tour in North America, the micro-budgeted We’re Still Together is a duel/dual journey into the night where two strangers meet, get a feeling for each other’s own realities, form a haphazard alliance and despite all the difference character traits somehow find commonality.

“Do you know the difference between looking at someone and staring at them?” Claire (Eve Harlow) asks the question rhetorically, because it’s obvious to her — and to us — that the guy who’s been gawking at her from the candy aisle of her convenience store doesn’t have the slightest clue. Chris (Jesse Camacho), it’s easy to extrapolate, is so used to being stared at that he’s likely forgotten how people prefer to be seen.
The trembling heart of Jesse Klein’s smart, sensitive and instantly engaging second feature (2010’s “Shadowboxing” was his first), Chris only wishes that he could be as invisible as he feels. Living with his mom in a dreary Montreal suburb, the unambiguously overweight twenty-something is hard not to notice but easy to ignore, and so many of his interactions turn sour that he would rather retreat into himself than try opening up.

Seeing that we're at the half-way mark, I figured I'd round-up the troops and take a mid-season temperature -- assessing the noteworthy film titles that were theatrically released and the the first six months of the film festival season has brought us so far. Including myself, I asked our regular contributors Ryan Brown, Jesse Klein, Jordan M. Smith and Blake Williams to submit their mid-year "Best of" Lists so far, no surprises here: we have a broad range of films to watch out for, some overlapping selections, some unique picks, a consensus top pick in this year's Palme d'Or winner, but the real shocker is the omission of last year's Palme recipient (Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives) which received a small theatrical release. > With the exception of one title (a film that actually played at Tiff last year, but his second viewing of the film confirmed the...
