Costume designer Donna Zakowska was totally unprepared for the time jumps in the fifth and final season of Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Stand-up comic Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) finally achieves stardom in 1961, yet we’re interrupted with glimpses of the future in wrapping up her story. This made Zakowska apprehensive and anxious when the scripts first came in from showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer-writer Dan Palladino.
“I wondered how it was going to work, the idea of these flash forwards,” the two-time Emmy winner told IndieWire. “That was really rather drastic to suddenly project who was Midge and [manager] Susie [Alex Borstein] 30 or 40 years from when we knew them. It’s hard to know how to really portray that, and, luckily, we had a very good prosthetics team. I just tried to think what happened and what does that mean in terms of the clothes and the characters and adhering to different periods?...

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel casting agents couldn’t have found better actors to play adult Esther and Ethan Maisel on Season 5.
Alexandra Socha embodied the neurotic, genius of Esther as a young woman, and even sounds like her mother Midge when she rants to her psychologist about not being able to talk to her mother. But then Ethan, played by Ben Rosenfield, is more of a gentler, passive soul living in Israel on a Kibbutz.
Both actors brought young adult Esther and Ethan Maisel to life on season 5, so who are these young actors?

Socha announced her appearance in season 5 in a very Maisel way. “You might see a familiar face (and an awesome mess of hair) in the opening scene of the season. What a joy to get to be on one of my favorite shows!

It’s the final bow for Prime Video’s awards darling “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and the latest season introduces a new narrative device that changes the whole show.
The opening episode of “Maisel” Season 5 picks up not with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) or her family or manager Susie (Alex Borstein), but with her daughter — a 23-year-old Esther Maisel (Alexandra Socha) decades in the future.
Creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino told IndieWire that the “Maisel” creative team has toyed with using time jumps for years, but felt that it was too early to dive into the characters’ futures.
“It wasn’t earned enough. Nobody gave a shit yet,” she said. “But it was a device we really wanted to use… we kind of went all in on it because it’s a fun storytelling device, and it helps inform in quicker pops. It makes the current story that we’re doing...

This piece contains spoilers for the season 5 premiere of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel."
One of the funniest moments in the season 5 three-part premiere of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is the nighttime hallway scene with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her young unconscious son Ethan (now played by Colin Keane). After an episode of debate and frustration over how to get Ethan to sleep in his room, Midge ends up dragging him up and down the hallway for an absurdly long time, arguing with her father (Tony Shalhoub) while they both make zero effort to keep their voices down.
It's a ridiculous scene for two reasons: the first is the implausibility of it all, the idea that none of this would wake Ethan up. The second is the fact that Midge clearly isn't pulling an actual kid around. It looks like an obvious prop child in that sleeping bag, and the show...

[The following story includes major spoilers for the first three episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season five.]
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel kicked off its final season with a new career opportunity for Midge, trouble ahead for the comedy’s core duo and an emotional farewell.
Season five opens with a shot of now-Ph.D candidate Esther Maisel (Alexandra Socha) in therapy in 1981, discussing her complicated relationship with her mother, who’s at this point in time a successful comedienne. In between bursts about how the world doesn’t revolve around Midge, Esther works on a molecular kinetic sequence to figure out how to use DNA mutations to change the trajectory of disease.
Rachel Brosnahan feels like the two women being at odds makes sense. “Midge has chosen a somewhat selfish profession,” Brosnahan tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think it’s inevitable that kids grow up to hate their parents to some degree. We only see them for a brief time, so...

She's back for one last kick at the can!
On The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 1, we get a series of heartfelt goodbyes and a glimpse at the future. It's a bittersweet beginning to the end of one of television's most delightful comedies.
Warning: This review contains spoilers for Episodes 1 - 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5.
The first episode is aptly titled because we "go forward" in time to 1981. Alexandra Socha is uncanny as the grown-up version of Midge's daughter, Esther.
She was so convincing that initially, I wondered if they had done visual effects or computer trickery on Rachel Brosnahan. Did Socha win a Midge Maisel impersonation contest? She's a marvel!
Poor Esther is neurotic and brilliant, which makes complete sense. We don't get to spend too much time with her here, but just enough to get an idea of how much Midge has affected her daughter.

Enormous critical acclaim is nice, I’m sure. It is, after all, what television writers and actors aspire to. But there’s also a joy in being a sleeper hit; a cult show that cruises under the radar but develops an obsessed following. Less glamorous, though, is programming that achieves middling commendations, medium admiration. Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is in this latter category: good reviews, a smattering of Emmys, and decent audiences on Amazon’s streaming service can’t hide the fact that Amy Sherman Palladino’s late-1950s comedy-drama has always been a touch unloved. As the curtain comes down with its fifth and final series, is it time to reappraise one of the warmest, wittiest shows of recent years?

“Earnestness” is a dirty word in the writer’s room of the supernatural Paramount+ series “Evil.” “We’re always looking for the weakness in a character or in their situation and if we can bring some comedy to it, it just feels natural,” said executive producer and writer Michelle King, who created the series with her husband Robert King, during a recent Deadline Zoom conversation. The couple are best known for the acclaimed CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Paramount +’s The Good Fight.”
“One thing that’s fun to play with as a storyteller is to take someone who the audience identifies with and sympathizes with and then skew it because otherwise the easiest thing in the world is to get an audience to identify with the leads,” said Robert, who is also a series director. “So, the more you do that, I think you’re playing with the narrative structure.

On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.
Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.
“We can’t believe it has been a year! We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers, who send in donations from all over the world,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “We thought that after the first few weeks, contributions would dwindle and the show would be more about bringing some joy and positivity during these dark times. But the fact that we have been able to do both – deliver fun and financial support – is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so grateful to our team behind the scenes,...

Head Over Heels, the Broadway musical featuring songs from The Go-Go’s including the title tune, “We Got The Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” will play its final performance Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, producers announced today.
The musical, which opened at the Hudson Theatre on July 26, will have played 188 regular performances and 37 previews by the time it closes next month. The production, greeted by mixed reviews, never caught fire at the box office, and has been struggling in recent weeks with grosses hovering around 20% of a

“Along with my partners, creative team and cast, it was our desire to create a piece of live theatre that celebrates love of all kinds and portrays a world of beauty in which joy and acceptance reign above all else,” said lead producer Christine Russell.

For better or worse, Broadway’s Head Over Heels is stuck with being known as “the Go-Go’s musical” – better because of the good will floating on stage with all those lighter-than-air hits by Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, et.al., worse because the hard-working new production can’t seem to keep itself from popping those effervescence tune bubbles one by one.
With the Go-Go’s music shotgun-wedded to Sir Philip Sidney’s 16th century prose poem The Arcadia – a marriage conceived by Avenue Q‘s Jeff Whitty, who wrote the original book before splitting, reportedly in part over his inclination to rewrite some of the Go-Go’s lyrics – Head Over Heels is Elizabethan farce by way of ye olde MTV. The verse may be archaic, but the we’re here sentiment is as up to date as last week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The area of intersection between fans of iambic pentameter and doers of the “Cool Jerk” may be a limited one, so you can imagine the initial chore in store for anyone charged with targeting the exact crossover audience that will most enjoy “Head Over Heels,” now and maybe forever to be popularly known as “that Go-Go’s musical produced by Gwyneth Paltrow.” Rather than being a “Jersey Boys”-style origin story about the pioneering all-female band, the story harks back to very olde England, with a cast of royal-court types offering intermittently Elizabethan-sounding dialogue between all the rocking out. Surely “Thy Lips are Sealed” popped up at some point on a list of discarded alternate titles.
The mix of ’80s music and 1680s setting is every bit as ridiculous as it sounds, and that’s a good thing, for the most part. Perhaps appropriately for a show whose themes end...

This year has been, by all accounts, tumultuous. In the past, viewers might turn to romantic comedies to remind them that everything will be Ok; to distract themselves from the seemingly unending onslaught of disheartening news, and inspire them to believe in the future.
But 2017 has seen a slight shift in the genre’s purpose. This year, more “rom-coms” than ever are taking their stories very, very seriously. From the black comic truths of Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce” to the healing power of love post-trauma in Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi,” this batch of romantic-minded comedies are addressing issues as honestly as anything else on television.
Sure, there’s still room for flirtatious fun, “will they or won’t they” pairings, and soul-bearing emotional confessions, but the list gathered below speaks to the state of the world: Love can still conquer all, but it’s not a cloaking agent.

For a show perhaps best known for its short shorts and tennis courts, “Red Oaks” has always been about a race: It’s the pursuit of one’s dream vs. the crushing constrictions of time. It’s those fleeting years of adolescence, spent getting high and thinking higher vs. the life’s practicalities, the expectations of parents, and the varying opportunities dictated by privilege. It’s David vs. Goliath, and David’s got a shot at this thing.
This race, though, has largely been run. Entering its final season, “Red Oaks” is flying past the finish line, and viewers are treated to a leisurely cool down, waiting for the results even if they can probably guess ‘em. This extended epilogue isn’t particularly urgent, nor hysterically funny. But it remains galvanizing, as the honesty and maturity that made the series beloved by its small fandom persists, and those who’ve...

This extended epilogue isn’t particularly urgent, nor hysterically funny. But it remains galvanizing, as the honesty and maturity that made the series beloved by its small fandom persists, and those who’ve...

It is game-set-match time for Amazon’s Red Oaks, the 1980s country club-set comedy that is launching its third and final season beginning October 20. The renewal gave creators Gregory Jacobs and Joe Gangemi the leeway to wrap up the story that revolves around Craig Roberts’ David, his pals, his parents and his sometimes-girlfriend (Alexandra Socha) as they all figure out how to grow up. The new season is set in 1987, when David is trying to make it in the film biz in New…...

It all started on the set of a show set in 1901, and it’s all ending at a time when the 1980s have never been more popular.
“I recall us standing on the set early in Season 1 of ‘The Knick,’ and one of these stories somehow came up again,” Steven Soderbergh said, referencing how his first assistant director, Gregory Jacobs, would share memories about growing up as a tennis pro in New Jersey. “I said, ‘Dude, this is a series. You’ve got to memorialize these stories. This just sounds like a really interesting world to explore during the period you experienced it.'”

2017 has been a strong year for horror—indie or otherwise—which means it has been tough keeping up with everything that has been released over the last eight-plus months. Here are my thoughts on a pair of films that I recently had the opportunity to watch, Michael Walker’s meta slasher Cut Shoot Kill and the zombie-themed It Stains the Sands Red from Colin Minihan.
Cut Shoot Kill: The biggest thing I look for whenever I go into any movie is whether or not the director at hand has any surprises in store for me as a viewer. And while Cut Shoot Kill may not seem all that revolutionary upon first glance, I must tip my hat to writer/director Walker, who did an admirable job subverting my expectations with his “movie within a movie,” often finding clever ways to blur the lines between fact and fiction for his ambitious story.

Arriving on VOD on August 8th courtesy of Freestyle Digital Media is writer/director Michael Walker’s intriguing movie-within-a-movie (one of this writer’s favorite cinematic sub-genres), Cut Shoot Kill, which follows an up-and-coming actress named Serena Brooks (Alexandra Socha) who gets more than she bargains for when she accepts the leading role in a low-budget horror movie helmed by underground director Alabama Chapman (Alex Hurt), who takes the violence in his films to disturbing levels.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Walker about his latest film, and he chatted about creating an unusual narrative to Cut Shoot Kill, collaborating with his film’s leads, the challenges of being a filmmaker, and more.
Congrats on the unique approach to this story. I enjoyed that you did an interesting concept here, in terms of a horror movie that's getting made but you don't quite know what's happening because you’re not sure...

We don’t know the viewing statistics for “Red Oaks,” but unless every single Amazon Prime subscriber is watching, it’s safe to say Gregory Jacobs and Joe Gangemi’s brilliant coming-of-age comedy is under-seen. Despite the nation’s recent over-infatuation with nostalgia-driven films and TV shows, somehow audiences overlooked this inventive and insightful gem last year — perhaps because it was one of the few period pieces not totally reliant on ’80s references to sell its story. And while skipping “Red Oaks” may have been an unfortunate error of omission then, it’s a grave mistake now.
Aside from the sheer enjoyment that comes from watching the delightful and whip-smart comedy, there’s a case to be made for “Red Oaks” as the most significant nostalgia-infused TV series currently streaming — especially as its Season 2 release is just days after the most dividing event on America’s calendar. Following an election...

As Red Oaks season 2 arrives on Amazon Prime Video, we chatted to lead Craig Roberts about his character, directing and more…
What Netflix’s Stranger Things is to 80s sci-fi horror, Amazon’s Red Oaks is to 80s coming-of-age romantic comedy. Without slipping into parody, both are a continuation of a familiar style of storytelling featuring characters and themes we know and love. If Stranger Things takes its cues from Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, Red Oaks has made itself the inheritor of John Hughes, Rob Reiner and Amy Heckerling. (In a neat connection, Heckerling has directed multiple episodes of Red Oaks, which also stars Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey, stitching it firmly into that continuity.)

While Amazon has had a successful year with its original programming, including acclaimed returning series “Transparent” and the debuts of “One Mississippi” and “Fleabag,” there’s one returning series that will send its audience back to the hazy summer days of the 1980s. The half-hour comedy-drama “Red Oaks” follows David Meyers (Craig Roberts), an aspiring filmmaker and Nyu undergraduate who spends his summers working as a tennis pro at the prestigious Red Oaks Country Club. At the end of last season, his parents (Jennifer Grey and Richard Kind) are separating, he broke up with his girlfriend Karen (Gage Golightly), and has fallen for Skye (Alexandra Socha), the daughter of Getty (Paul Reiser), the country club’s president. Watch the trailer for the second season below.

There will be no body swaps in “Red Oaks” Season 2, but fans of ’80s genre staples can get excited for a “bachelor party road trip.”
The Amazon comedy made a few waves in its first season when Richard Kind and Craig Roberts’ characters swapped bodies for an episode, delightfully recreating one of cinema’s favorite story premises during the Reagan era (and earning the episode a spot on IndieWire’s Best Episodes of 2015 list in the process). So it should come as no surprise who, among the stellar group of producers on the series — from David Gordon Green to Greg Jacobs — pitched the idea for a body swap episode.
“It was [executive producer Steven] Soderbergh’s idea,” Jacobs said, who has worked as Soderbergh’s producer and assistant director for nearly two decades. “We learned you could still get the heart and the emotion even with the zany antics.”
But Season 2 is moving...

If any man alive has the right to argue for TV's recent ascension over movies, it would be David Chase. But "The Sopranos" creator has never seen it that way, telling me a few years ago that the only obvious advantage he thinks TV has is that "there’s more of it, and you can get into more detail. I guess maybe this is what it comes down to: in a television show, you can spend a lot of money on very little small things about people.” That ability to expand stories and drill down on characters has always been TV's greatest strength, but it's been particularly obvious with the migration of indie filmmakers to TV over the last few years. Shows like "Transparent," "Girls," "Togetherness," and Hulu's new "Casual" could have easily been made into 90-minute movies that played the festival circuit; instead, we get longer versions that really...

There's a pushy dad (Richard Kind) and a beautiful girl named Skye (Alexandra Socha), who has an even pushier dad (Paul Reiser). The pilot for Red Oaks is available now, and the rest of the season will be available for streaming on October 9.
