One of the biggest surprises and most joyous moments of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was when Jack Black‘s villainous Bowser took to the piano and roared out the power ballad “Peaches.” The song was the funniest ballad we’d ever seen…. until “Barbie” came out.” That movie featured Ryan Gosling‘s Ken singing the tune “I’m Just Ken,” backed up by a bunch of other Kens including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.
It’s strange, curious, and fantastic that two films have been released this year that feature hilarious ballads as key moments in their films for their story’s villains. As such, we expect both songs to compete for Best Original Song this year purely for their sheer popularity. Our odds chart for this category isn’t yet up, however. For now, we’re just focusing on the chances of these two songs only.

It has been another strange and uncertain year for Hollywood, with the pandemic hitting cinemas hard and streaming services rising to hold the fort. It has also been a year in which we’ve seen a growing diversity in front of, and behind the camera, with an increasing focus on new voices and new stories being told.
Last year saw Bong Joon-ho ‘s Parasite achieve Oscar greatness and, for a brief pre-covid moment, it seemed that the world of cinema was beginning to embrace a wider world. The 2021 BAFTAs showed signs this was continuing with Minari, Another Round and Promising Young Woman taking home a clutch of awards each.
This year’s American Academy Awards will be a strange affair, certainly one to remember.
Here is the full list of nominations with Winners in bold.

Things are of course very different this year, and all performances for the Academy Award nominees for Best Original Song were performed during the preshow, which began at 6:30 p.m. Et., rather than being interspersed and performed live during the Oscars event at Union Station in Los Angeles.

One of the major changes made to the pandemic-impacted 2021 Academy Awards was pre-recording all Original Song nominees and moving them to the 90-minute official pre-show, Oscars: Into the Spotlight on ABC.
“Húsavík”, performed by Molly Sandén, was taped in Húsavík, Iceland where Sandén was joined by a children’s choir. In the movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, the song is performed by Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell with vocals by Sandén and Ferrell. Filmed at night, the Oscar performance ended with fireworks over the picturesque Húsavík harbor.
The other songs, “Io Sì (Seen)” from The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se), “Hear My Voice” from The Trial of the Chicago 7, “Speak Now” from One Night in Miami and “Fight For You” from Judas and the Black Messiah, were shot at the Dolby Family Terrace of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles with views of the city.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

Leslie Odom Jr. performed his song “Speak Now,” from the film “One Night in Miami,” on the Academy Awards’ pre-show telecast, “Into the Spotlight,” Sunday. Watch it below.
The singer is nominated for best original song for the theme, which he performs over the end credits of a drama in which he plays Sam Cooke and also sings in character as that legendary singer. Odom Jr. is nominated as a songwriter alongside his collaborator, Sam Ashworth. He’s also doing double-duty among nominees this year, being up for best supporting actor as well.
All five nominated songs this year are being performed on the 90-minute pre-show, instead of on the awards show. “Speak Now” is one of four that were all pre-recorded on the terrace of the soon-to-open Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. A fifth song, “Husavik,” from “Eurovision Song Contest,” was filmed in the city of Husavik in Iceland,...

One Night in Miami has one of the best movie soundtracks we've heard in a while, so it's only fitting that Leslie Odom Jr.'s "Speak Now" scored an Oscar nod for best original song. In an effort to switch things up from years prior, the Academy had all the best original song nominees perform their songs in their entirety during the Oscars: Into the Spotlight preshow on Sunday, instead of featuring them during the ceremony. As expected, Odom Jr. delivered a beautiful rendition of "Speak Now," and the performance alone is Oscar-worthy. Seriously, his voice is just so soothing.
Odom Jr. cowrote the powerful ballad with songwriter Sam Ashworth. "'Speak Now' resonated because it sounded like: 'Listen, your time is precious and you're not guaranteed a lot of it, so speak right now in this moment. Use your life, use everything that you are given, to make a change...

This year’s roster of Best Original Song and Score nominees includes a heavy dose of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (double nominees in the score category), more of the same from 12-time nominee Diane Warren, and the support of an entire Icelandic town. But while not every expected contender wound up cited in the Academy Awards’ two music categories (better luck next year to Taylor Swift and former winner Alexandre Desplat), the 2021 Oscar nominees for Best Original Song and Best Score include some very worthy musica

Leslie Odom Jr. gave one of the year’s most inspired performances as soul icon Sam Cooke in Regina King‘s directorial debut, “One Night in Miami.” The Amazon film concludes with Odom belting out a spine-tingling rendition of Cooke’s classic Civil Rights Movement anthem, “A Change is Gonna Come,” a tearful climax that puts the actor’s range of talents on full display. For his efforts, Odom has been nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song.
This marks the first year the Grammy and Tony winner has contended at the Oscars. In Odom’s first race he faces off against fellow first-timers Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”) and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) along with previous nominees Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Songwriter Sam Ashworth has “had a hard time not writing about hopeful things” over the last few years of social and political strife. He brought that hopefulness to “Speak Now,” the original song he co-wrote with Leslie Odom Jr. for the film “One Night in Miami.” Now they’re nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars for their composition. Watch our exclusive video interview with Ashworth above.
“It overwhelmed me with hope, it overwhelmed me with sadness, it overwhelmed me with a sense of urgency,” Ashworth explains about the emotional impact the film had on him. “Leslie and I both came at the beginning of the process with that mindset of just wanting to be very respectful to the work that had already been done.” Collaborating with Odom over FaceTime due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Ashworth “wrote and rewrote four or five songs before we ended up where we got to with ‘Speak Now.

With the Oscars just ten days away, Variety has learned a number of the original song performances will be pre-recorded this coming Monday and Tuesday.
At least some of the contenders will be performing their nominated songs on the rooftop of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The recorded musical acts will serve a dual purpose: They will boast a dramatic, Hollywood-only backdrop and will also provide a plug for the costly and oft-delayed museum, which was originally intended to open on April 30 and will instead welcome guests on Sept. 30.

Leslie Odom Jr. is up for a pair of Oscars this year: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song (“Speak Now”) for his work in the Amazon drama “One Night in Miami,” which makes him only the fourth person to receive nominations for acting and songwriting in the same year. “It means a lot,” Odom explains, and it also “speaks to some positive changes in the industry over the years.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Odom above.

Sometimes the backstories of Oscar-nominated songs are as compelling as the songs themselves.
Last week, the Songwriters Hall of Fame corralled nine of this year’s 12 nominated songwriters for a round-table discussion of how their songs came to be written, and how they feel about contributing to the art of cinema.
Paul Williams, Oscar winner (“Evergreen”) and president and chairman of the board of ASCAP, and Nile Rodgers, Grammy-winning producer-writer and Songwriters Hall of Fame chairman, were co-moderators of the hour-long panel.
“Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago 7”
Writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s script had the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” as an optimistic end-title song which, composer Daniel Pemberton said, “was probably not going to work.” Seeking an original idea, he thought, “How do you take this very complicated story and make it very simple, with a song that hits people directly, and has a deeper meaning?...

Double Oscar nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was among the craftsmen and craftswomen at Variety‘s Artisans Awards offering advice on how to get into the field they work in. Odom Jr. said, “Starting with the education is key, and starting in the theater is key for me.”
The “One Night in Miami” actor, songwriter and theater performer was honored at the seventh annual Variety Artisans Awards alongside co-writer Sam Ashworth for their original song contender “Speak Now.”
The tribute evening took place in a virtual ceremony on Monday that streamed on the Santa Barbara Film Festival website. Variety’s Senior Artisans Editor Jazz Tangcay moderated conversations with the Artisan Award recipients.

Everyone in the music business is wondering the same thing: Could veteran songwriter Diane Warren, denied the Oscar 11 times over the past 33 years, finally win on her 12th try?
Warren, whose movie songs range from Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” this year penned “Io Sì (Seen)” for Netflix’s “The Life Ahead.” Sung in Italian by co-lyricist Laura Pausini, it could become only the fourth foreign-language song to win.
But it’s far from a sure thing. Only one song (“Husavik” from “Eurovision Song Contest”) is actually performed during the film itself, and that can be a potent factor for voters; and the other three relate to the social-justice issues of the 1960s that continue to be relevant today. All but Warren are first-time nominees.

Leslie Odom Jr. was more than a bit uncomfortable during a recent Zoom conversation with the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman as she ticked off all of his accomplishments including a Tony for his performance as Aaron Burr in ‘Hamilton,” a Grammy for “Hamilton” and now two Oscar nominations for Regina King‘s “One Night in Miami.” He contends in both Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the legendary singer Sam Cooke and Best Original Song (with Sam Ashworth) for “Speak Now.” “I wish I could have been off camera for that,” he admitted with a smile.

Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”

The music branch of the Academy often leans into pop stars in this category, partly because the members want to see stars like last year’s winner, Elton John for “Rocketman,” sing their original songs on the Oscar stage. This year voters skipped past hit songs from Disney movies like “Mulan.”
This year’s current frontrunner is “Hamilton” Tony and Grammy winner and rookie Oscar contender Leslie Odom Jr., who follows Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”), Lady Gaga (“A Star is Born”), and Mary J. Blige (“Mudbound”) as a dual Oscar nominee for songwriting and acting, for the Sam Cooke-inspired “Speak Now” from Regina King’s “One Night in Miami.” Odom collected a win at the Critics Choice Awards. Best Song could be the film’s only Oscar.

Following their win at the Golden Globes, in the category of Best Original Song – Motion Picture, songwriters Diane Warren and Laura Pausini have locked down an Oscar nomination, which recognized “Io Sì,” the original song they wrote for Italian Netflix drama, The Life Ahead.
While this recognition brought Warren to a career total of 12 noms, it happened to mark the first for Pausini, who’s referred to by her collaborator as “the best singer in Italy.”
“For Italy, this is an honor,” Pausini said. “I’m happy to be part of this project because this is a project we made as a family.”
While Warren is no newcomer to the Oscars competition, getting nominated for her songs never gets old. “This is so great, it really is, and so exciting,” she said. “I haven’t won yet, so maybe Laura, you’re my lucky charm here.”

Just a day after winning two Grammys, renowned R&b artist H.E.R. earned her first Oscar nomination. The nom came in recognition of her original song “Fight for You,” which she penned and performed for Warner Bros. Pictures’ Judas and the Black Messiah.
For H.E.R., the recognition on the part of the Academy means the world. “I couldn’t believe it. You know, I feel like I’m part of history, I’m making history, and I’m doing what I love. So, it’s all really a blessing,” she told Deadline. “To be spreading such an important message, and hopefully, leading this generation into some changes, I pray that’s what I’m doing.”
From the artist’s perspective, both Judas and its “uptempo, soulful” end title track arrived at just the right time. “It’s the perfect time because in 2020, we had to be still, and we witnessed very hurtful,...

David Fincher’s monochromatic “Mank” dominated the Oscar crafts on Monday for Netflix, grabbing six nominations for Erik Messerschmidt’s cinematography, costume design, makeup and hair, production design, score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and sound. Paul Greengrass’ post-Civil War western, “News of the World,” followed with four nominations.
Netflix also did well by collecting three nominations apiece from Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, in addition to solo nominations from George Clooney’s sci-fi “The Midnight Sky” (visual effects), Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” (Terence Blanchard’s score), and “The Life Ahead (La Vita Davanti a Se),” as Diane Warren secured her 12th original song nomination for “Io Si (Seen).”

Leslie Odom Jr. earned an Oscar nomination on Monday for his role as Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” and looking back, he said he felt “different” after wrapping Regina King’s film.
“‘One Night in Miami’ meant so much to me,” he told TheWrap shortly after the announcement of his nomination. “After filming, I remember being in a cab to the airport, I had such a transformative experience making it under Regina’s leadership with a brilliant script by Kemp Powers. I was different, and I called my team and I said, it might mean that I don’t work as often because I know movies like that don’t grow on trees. They all should feel like this.”

Nearly all of Oscar’s 2020 original-song nominees are newcomers, while only two of this morning’s original-score nominees are new to the competition.
Veteran songwriter Diane Warren earned her 12th nomination for “Io Sì (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” shared with singer and co-lyricist Laura Pausini. She must be seen as the front-runner, as she has never won in over three decades of nominations; and she won the Golden Globe on Feb. 28.
Leslie Odom Jr., also nominated this morning for playing singer Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” earned a second nomination as the writer of that film’s closing song, “Speak Now,” shared with Sam Ashworth.
All of the other song nominees are first-timers at the Academy Awards. British composer Daniel Pemberton received a nod for “Hear My Voice” for the film he scored, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” shared with vocalist and co-writer Celeste.

For the fourth straight year, someone has been nominated for acting and songwriting Oscars: Leslie Odom Jr. earned bids Monday for Best Supporting Actor for “One Night in Miami” and for Best Original Song for his tune “Speak Now” from the Amazon film. While he’s the fourth person to achieve this simultaneous double, he is the first man to do it.
Mary J. Blige made history in 2018 when she became the first person to be nominated at the Oscars for acting and songwriting in the same year, making the shortlists for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song (“Mighty River”) for “Mudbound.” The next year, Lady Gaga reaped a Best Actress bid for “A Star Is Born” and won Best Original Song for the inescapable “Shallow” from the remake. Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” swept the Latino Entertainment Film Awards on Sunday, taking home four awards, including best picture, director, cinematography and editing.
The awards, which are voted on and presented by the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, also honored Oscar-nominated actor Rosie Perez with the Rita Moreno Lifetime Achievement Award and the Latino Activism Award. In a pre-taped speech, Perez thanked the Leja and spoke about her work as an activist.

When Leslie Odom Jr. signed up to play Sam Cooke in “One Night in Miami,” he knew that he had a non-acting task awaiting him after shooting: director Regina King had already made it clear that whoever played the late, great soul singer was also who she wanted to co-write and perform an original end-credits theme. That task fell readily into the hands of Odom, who had already used his stardom from his stage role in “Hamilton” to launch a career as a singer-songwriter.
The he Golden Globe-nominated and Oscar-shortlisted “Speak Now,” which Odom co-wrote with his friend Sam Ashworth, is intended to subtly echo Cooke’s own “A Change Is Gonna Come”… even if, as Odom explains it, it’s closer to a still questioning song than “answer song” per se.

Updated with video: Six-time Golden Globe award nominee and, now, two-time winner Diane Warren was brief in her acceptance speech for Best Original Song – Motion Picture on Sunday, when the habitually soft-spoken composer got to the point for her work on “Io Si (Seen)” from Netflix’s The Life Ahead.
She thanked director Eduardo Ponti, and the film’s star – and Ponti’s famous mother — Sophia Loren. She then said of the film, “It’s such a beautiful story about people who aren’t really seen and they see each other and they see each other through love. And that’s what inspired the song. So thank you again.
Warren shares the award with Niccolò Agliardi and Laura Pausini, the latter of whom also spoke. Pausini thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press, saying, “Grazie Mille,” which translates to “a thousand graces” in Italian.

The Golden Globes usually pop off a surprise or two, and Sunday they continued the tradition in some marquee categories.
The most notable upset was Andra Day, in her first acting role, winning Actress in Motion Picture – Drama for Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday and taking a strong category that included Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby and frontrunners Frances McDormand and Carey Mulligan.
Other surprises tonight were easy to spot: Even the winners themselves were shocked to hear their names called.
Day’s reaction was equaled that of Jodie Foster, who won for STX films’ The Mauritanian. It was the third Golden Globe for the two-time Oscar winner — her last win for for The Silence of the Lambs came in 1992. Globes organizer the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave Foster its career achievement honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, in 2013.
“I think you made a mistake. I’m a little speechless.

When “Mudbound” brought Mary J. Blige Oscar bids for acting and songwriting (“Mighty River”) in 2018, a trail was blazed and an annual tradition began. In 2019, Lady Gaga won for penning “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” and was simultaneously included in the Best Actress lineup. Last year, Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet”) competed for both Best Actress and Best Original Song (“Stand Up”). The trend is set to continue this year now that Leslie Odom Jr. is expected to reap double bids for “One Night in Miami.” He would be the first man to achieve this double act and could be the first person to pull off both wins.
Since he made his Broadway debut in “Rent” at age 17, Odom’s singing voice has been an integral part of his acting career. In 2012, after over a decade of adding theatre and TV roles to his resume, he made his film debut in “Red Tails,...

For his efforts, Odom has been nominated for two Golden Globes: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song.
In the first race, he faces off against Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Jared Leto (“The Little Things”) and Bill Murray (“On the Rocks”). While Odom is a first-time nominee, his competition has all been here before.
Murray won one of his six previous bids: Best Comedy/Musical Actor in 2004 for “Lost in Translation.” Baron Cohen...

Jared Leto scored his second career Golden Globe nomination this year for his supporting role in neo-noir crime thriller “The Little Things,” directed by John Lee Hancock. His first Globe nomination was for “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2014 in this same category, which he ended up winning on his way to also triumphing at the Oscars that year.
In this Warner Bros. release, Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Rami Malek play two detectives hunting the same serial killer in 1990s Los Angeles. Leto is the morally ambiguous prime suspect Albert Sparma, who taunts the suspicious detectives as he engages in a cat and mouse game with them, while the audience is kept guessing as to whether he is as sinister as he appears. Leto also earned a spot in the competitive supporting race at SAG Awards. And his film showed up on two Oscar shortlists for its makeup/hairstyling and for Thomas Newman‘s original score.
