Slava Basovich is a Bay Area filmmaker, film editor, and teacher. He
was born in Kiev, grew up in Los Angeles, and received his BA in
history from UC Berkeley and an MFA in cinema from San Francisco State
University. Before taking on filmmaking full-time, he spent several
years as a social worker and advocate counselor working with at-risk
youth in San Francisco and Brooklyn. This background greatly impacted
his world-view and the themes that he addresses in his films - those of
social justice, human strength, and dignity. In the short time that he
has been a filmmaker, Slava has made several documentary, narrative,
and experimental shorts. He has also worked as an assistant editor on a
number of television programs ('First 48' for A&E, 'Crime Scenes
Uncovered' for The Discovery Channel) and most recently as an associate
editor on 'Always Been A Rambler,' a documentary feature by Yasha
Aginsky. 'Obshiy Yizik (Common Ground)' is his first feature film.
