Just about everything you need to hear from “Painkiller” is conveyed within its familiar yet hard-hitting first hour. There’s an aptly scathing introduction to the Sackler family, starting with Arthur (Clark Gregg), who transformed the pharmaceutical industry through public-facing advertising campaigns, then his nephew/”disciple,” Richard (Matthew Broderick), who followed his uncle’s playbook when pushing OxyContin to the masses. Next there’s Shannon Schaeffer (West Duchovny), a broke college grad who’s recruited by the Sackler’s company, Purdue, to help push their new wonder drug to doctors. Then there’s Glen Kryger (Taylor Kitsch), a loving husband and father who’s prescribed — you guessed it — OxyContin after an on-the-job injury. And finally, providing the framework for all these stories, there’s Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), a lawyer at the U.S. Attorney’s office who was among the first to investigate the tragic impact of OxyContin — and...

It’s hard to say how “Painkiller,” a fictionalized Netflix limited series based on America’s opioid crisis, would play had one never seen the similarly themed and structured – and vastly superior – 2021 Hulu limited series “Dopesick.”
The new show’s misuse of lead actors Uzo Aduba, who plays a crusading U.S. Attorney’s office investigator, and Matthew Broderick, who plays real-life former Purdue Pharma head Richard Sackler – would be evident either way. So would director Peter Berg’s overuse of early aughts-style rock ‘em sock ‘em shaky camera work, quick edits and blue light.
But “Painkiller” likely would not seem so wholly unnecessary if “Dopesick” did not exist.
Unfolding over six hour-long episodes, “Painkiller” makes compelling points about Purdue, the pharmaceutical company that overhyped the painkilling potential of its drug OxyContin while underplaying its addictive qualities. Characters repeatedly call OxyContin what it is: heroin in candy coating. Such frankness...

In the second episode of Netflix’s Painkiller, two sales representatives (West Duchovny and Dina Shihabi) call in on various doctors’ offices to push a pill that promises to reduce pain and enhance quality of life. Like all good sales reps, they come bearing gifts, among them a cute stuffed toy in the shape of a pill, a recurring motif throughout the series meant to represent danger disguised as something innocuous. The drug in question is OxyContin, and the sales reps work for Purdue Pharma, the company that, under the ownership of the now infamous Sackler family, marketed the opioid to millions of Americans to devastating results.
The plot unfolds as Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba), a jaded state investigator, recounts her findings to the lawyers trying to build a case against the Sacklers. The series attempts to address every possible angle of the scandal, from the company that created the drug,...

Taylor Kitsch, now starring opposite Chris Pratt in Amazon’s The Terminal List, next toplines a streaming series about the origins of the opioid crisis. While the premise sounds familiar to Hulu’s Emmy-nominated Dopesick, that doesn’t trouble the 41-year-old actor.
“We’re fucking pumped about it and not nervous after Dopesick, not at all,” Kitsch told The Hollywood Reporter at The Terminal List premiere. “We’re a very different show and when you’ve got Pete Berg at the helm, you know we’re not fucking around.”
In the Netflix series, Kitsch reteams with frequent collaborator Berg (with whom he worked on Friday Night Lights, Battleship and Lone Survivor) to play an addict. Sometimes, all you want to do is watch a gleefully dumb sci-fi action-slash-disaster movie about the Moon getting knocked off its orbit and falling towards the Earth. Fortunately, director Roland Emmerich has you covered – he’s built a career out of catering to exactly that need and his latest film, Moonfall, is comfortably his most ridiculous film to date.
The film begins with a 2011-set prologue, in which astronauts Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) experience a strange outer space encounter that kills their colleague while on a routine mission in orbit around the Moon. Back on Earth, nobody believes Brian (Jocinda was conveniently unconscious) and he’s blamed for the incident, eventually leaving NASA in disgrace,...

Roland Emmerich’s big-budget sci-fi disaster pic Moonfall has been set for a March 25 release in China (check out the new poster below). The movie, which released via Lionsgate domestically on February 4, is heavily backed by China’s Huayi, so this is an important piece of its recoupment prospects. The China date falls one week after the Prc start of Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman.
The $146M independent pic sold out at Cannes in 2019 and was one of the market’s hottest titles. Partners also include AGC Studios and its international distribution network, Centropolis, CAA Media Finance, East West Bank, Mufg Union Bank and SPG3 Entertainment.
So far, box office has been far from out of this world with just $19M in North America and $39.4M global. Several markets in Asia are still to go along with some key European hubs. Emmerich’s last film, 2019’s Midway, did $42M...

Hot off directing the battle epic “Midway,” writer-director Roland Emmerich is back with “Moonfall.” The sci-fi action film stars Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson (who also starred in “Midway”) as astronauts who take up the task of saving the Earth from colliding with the moon. “Game of Thrones” alum John Bradley co-stars as K.C. Houseman, a conspiracy theorist and amateur scientist who worms his way into the mission, as well as Carolina Bartczak as the ex-wife of Wilson’s Brian Harper and Michael Peña as her new husband.
Back on Earth, nobody believes Brian (Jocinda was conveniently unconscious) and he’s blamed for the incident, eventually leaving NASA in disgrace, despite having safely...

Often, the best movies tell a very simple story but they tell that story extremely well and Hall, featured at both Frightfest and Blood in the Snow festivals, is no different. From the very start we see a group of people in a hotel hallway, struggling with a debilitating sickness that seems to have spread through them all, each trying to escape the horror of it.
Like I say, this is all in the opening scene so where does it go from there? Well maybe unsurprisingly the movie goes back in time to show us some of the stories about why people are in the hotel and the issues they are having there. The locations don’t stray away from the hotel though...

"The end of the world starts at the end of the... hall." Strike Media in the UK has launched an official trailer for an indie contained horror thriller titled Hall, the first narrative feature from actor-turned-filmmaker Francesco Giannini. This premiered at FrightFest last year and will open in the UK in September, but has no US release announced yet. When a debilitating virus spreads across a hotel hallway, scattered victims must fight for survival. Fear is spreading... Who will make it out alive? What do you even do? Who will navigate their way out of the hotel corridor through the long and narrow stretch of isolated carnage? Starring Julian Richings, Carolina Bartczak, Yumiko Shaku, Mark Gibson, & Vlasta Vrana. Yeah, this definitely looks freaky, but it's not exactly the most original idea - especially with a real virus still threatening all of us. FrightFest, the UK horror festival that was forced to move online this year because of pandemic disruption, has unveiled a lineup for its 21st edition (August 27-31) including seven world premieres.
The event opens with the UK premiere of Sky Sharks, which features Nazi zombie-piloted airborne killer sharks.
World premieres include Logan Thomas’s There’s No Such Thing As Vampires, Patrick Rea’s I Am Lisa, Ruben Pla’s The Horror Crowd, G-Hey Kim’s Don’t Click, Toby Watts’ Playhouse, Airell Anthony Hayles and Sam Casserly’s They’re Outside, and Francesco Giannini’s Hall.
Industry-focused events will include a panel hosted by Den Of Geek’s UK editor Rosie Fletcher about how the horror genre has been affected by the pandemic.
All online film screenings will be geo-locked to UK audiences and available through FrightFest’s website.
“We will desperately miss seeing all of you in person...
