With his Instagram posts of old Thrasher magazine covers, flyers of seminal post-hardcore group Jawbox, and pictures with Neko Case, Matt Jencik is not your stereotypical Taylor Swift target. The 50-year-old, long-haired, bespectacled longtime buyer for Chicago’s legendary Reckless Records admits he’d probably be listening to Van Halen at home. But in records stores like Reckless and around the country, things have changed drastically.

The 2023 VMAs are coming up on September 12, with top nominees like Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Sza, and The Weeknd vying for prizes. The races this year are competitive, with many of the biggest hits clashing with some of music’s biggest fanbases. So let’s consider who will win in four genres: Best Pop, Best R&b, Best Rock and Best Alternative.
SEESean ‘Diddy’ Combs will receive Global Icon Award at 2023 VMAs
Best Pop
We can rule out Demi Lovato, Ed Sheeran, and Pink here. Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night” is certainly a big hit, but it’s not as ubiquitous as the number-one hits in the category. So this will come down to the other three videos: Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers,” Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire.”
There’s no denying that Swift has the biggest fanbase out of the three artists, so she might come out on top.

Exclusive: Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 thriller Basic Instinct is the inspiration for a new comic book series by Sumerian Comics.
Sumerian is teaming with Cuban illustrator Vanesa R. Del Rey to create the first comic book series based on the movie, which starred Sharon Stone as enigmatic writer Catherine Tramell who becomes the prime suspect in a murder. Below are the first cover designs.
The series will follow an anonymous artist who draws inspiration from famous murders — their newest exhibit is inspired by Tramell’s “Icepick Murders.” When a security guard at the exhibition space is murdered on opening night, the art director responsible for the opening is thrust into an investigation that forces him to question his own involvement.

Lana Del Rey surprised fans in Rogers, Arkansas, Tuesday night with a rendition of Tammy Wynette’s Number One country hit from 1968, “Stand by Your Man.” The stage was dark when the first chords struck and Del Rey, who’s been dressing a bit more Loretta Lynn than Wynette on this tour, intoned the opening lines, “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman,” to the delight of the crowd. Her backup dancers swayed and “oohed” and a couple of dancers at the head of the stage pulled off ballroom lifts and dips.

Lollapalooza 2023 is a wrap. During the festival’s fourth and final day, rain continued to soak Chicago’s Grant Park. Thankfully, by headlining time, the bad weather had subsided, but not before leaving plenty of puddles for festival attendees to navigate and slippery mud all around.
It wouldn’t have been a proper Lollapalooza without hometown rapper Chance the Rapper popping up at some point during the weekend. He did just that during Joey Bada$$’s set earlier on Sunday evening, performing “No Problem” and “The Highs & the Lows.”

Multi-award-winning singer Lana Del Rey seemed to have taken a day off from her celebrity life, as she was seen working at an Alabama Waffle House last week.
A video of Del Rey working behind the counter of a Waffle House in Florence, Alabama, shows her wearing black shorts and their blue uniform shirt with a yellow nametag pinned on the front where her first name, Lana, could be seen. In the video, she also talks to someone and tells them not to film without permission.
Other videos of the “Summertime Sadness” singer signing autographs in the Waffle House parking lot she was working at and an American Thrift Store parking lot were posted online. Del Rey was also recorded singing “Amazing Grace” to a Waffle House customer.
Why Del Rey was working there is unclear. Still, many have speculated that she was there to promote upcoming music connected to the city of Florence.

Lana Del Rey changed the lyrics to her song “Chemtrails Over the Country Club,” insinuating that she was still involved with her ex-boyfriend Sean Larkin when he got married.
Del Rey was performing at London’s BST Hyde Park when she threw shade at Larkin.
She altered the ending of the song from the original lyrics, “You’re born in December and I’m born in June.” Instead of ending the song there, she added, “He’s born in December and he got married when we were still together. Sometimes I wonder what his wife would think if she knew that I didn’t know anything. He’s born in December and I’m born in June. A Canadian man hailing from New Brunswick was arrested for making death threats against Lana Del Rey ahead of her performance at Festival d’été de Québec this past weekend.
Denys Mallet, 40, “knowingly made threats to cause death or bodily harm” to the singer during a period between January 1st, 2022 and July 6th, 2023, according to an indictment (via CTV News). Mallet appeared in court last Friday and remains in custody. He is due back in court on July 17th.
Del Rey performed at Festival d’été de Québec as scheduled on Saturday — which marked her first North American concert in four years. She is next set to play at Chicago’s Lollapalooza and San Francisco’s Outside Lands next month.
In 2018, a Florida man was arrested after threatening to kidnap Del Rey. He was later sentenced to one year in prison.

Typically, it’s somewhat easy to predict most of the eventual Album of the Year nominees at the Grammys. There’s usually a number of albums that, because of their high profile or the popularity of the artist, just feel like they’re safe to get in. This year, however, that list is quite short, with a lot of the biggest names from these past few years of music either dropping their records last season or waiting for the next one. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and eight records will still be nominated. So what are the big contenders with just two months left before eligibility ends on September 15?

Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” is like a more serious version of one of The Beatles’ songs. Del Rey’s tune is a lot better than the Fab Four’s tune. Del Rey’s track was one of her biggest hits in the United States while The Beatles’ track didn’t chart there.
Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” is one of her best songs. It’s lyrically similar to a tune from The Beatles‘ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite this, The Beatles’ track has a typically cute Paul McCartney tone.
Why Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young and Beautiful’ is similar to The Beatles’ ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’
In “Young and Beautiful,” Del Rey asks her lover if he will continue to love her as she ages. It’s a deeply emotional tune and one of the most iconic ballads of the 2010s.

Anohni’s career has been powered by and fascinated with change. On 2005’s “For Today I Am a Boy,” from I Am a Bird Now, she plainly sang, “One day I’ll grow up, I’ll be a beautiful woman,” anticipating her blossoming evolution as a transgender woman. The artist’s stunning 2016 album Hopelessness was outfitted with chilly, sumptuous electronic soundscapes that pivoted away from the neo-classical palette of her previous work. And My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, Anohni’s first full-length album in seven years, is another decisive permutation in her musical identity: a swerve into blues rock.
The 10 songs here feature some of Anohni’s most laidback and unfussy arrangements to date. The album’s sound is, like Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence, marked by minimalist, sometimes gloomy guitar strumming. My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross was produced by Jimmy Hogarth,...

Lana Del Rey was 30 minutes late taking the stage for her Saturday set at Glastonbury, a delay which she attributed to her hair taking “so long to do.”

In the past few years, the Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been a highly contested award. With recent nominees and winners including critically beloved masterpieces like Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” Phoebe Bridgers’s “Punisher,” Wet Leg’s self-titled album, and Japanese Breakfast’s “Jubilee,” it’s no wonder that the caliber of the nominees is expected to be pretty high, especially since alternative music tends to enjoy better critical reception than most genres these days. This year the race already seems to be quite competitive, with still a few months left until the September 15 eligibility deadline.

Lana Del Rey’s ‘Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd’ Is Her Most Soul-Searching Album Yet
Early in Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Lana Del Rey highlights a sermon from megachurch pastor-to-the-stars Judah Smith. In the most Del Rey fashion, it was clearly recorded on her phone during a service — you can hear her and a friend’s giggles bump up in the foreground, above Smith’s projecting voice and a piano instrumental that keeps it moving. Smith proselytizes about love and lust, reading from the Book of Psalms. His presence feels strikingly superfluous in the context of Del Rey...

At one point in the track, she quotes the Christian hymn “Amazing Grace.” She also quotes Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” According to The Guardian, “Walk on the Wild Side” is an ode to 1970s hedonism that references personalities from Andy Warhol’s Factory.
Del Rey does this all in a song that’s more musically indebted to trip-hop and baroque pop than either hymn books or Reed. “Born to Die” proves Del Rey is great at creating fascinating juxtapositions — and great at making songs as well.

When two talented indie musicians like Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey walk into a room, magic happens. The two sat down for a conversation with Interview magazine, where Eilish interviewed Del Rey about her upcoming album and the two shared stories about fame from two different generations.
"I knew for months before I got my first iPhone that [my lock screen] was going to be that f*cking photo of you with the bee on your lip," Eilish said about Del Rey while fangirling, also explaining that she covered Del Rey's song "Brooklyn Baby" at the last school talent show she performed in before she got famous. Despite the 16-year age gap between Eilish, 21, and Del Rey, 37, the admiration is mutual.

Lana Del Rey is back with an epic seven-minute song, “A&w,” from her upcoming ninth album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, out March 24 via Interscope.
The seven-minute track is classic Lana in pretty much every way imaginable, all bad love and Americana symbolism wrapped up the decision to turn a classic root beer brand, A&w, into an acronym for something else entirely: “Call him up, come in to my bedroom,” Del Rey sings on the hook, “Ended up, we fuck on the hotel...

Love her or love to hate her, Lana Del Rey has never been everyone’s feminist icon (and has made some notable missteps). With a new single “A&w” (short for “American Whore”) out today and a decade of bare-souled music in her arsenal, Del Rey has been divisive since she released the pouty, DIY music video to her first…...

Lana Del Rey has unveiled “A&w,” a seven-minute pop epic about femininity, sexuality, criticism, and, as she puts it, “the experience of being an American whore.”
Co-written and co-produced by Jack Antonoff, “A&w” is really two songs in one, the first floating lightly over pianos and acoustic guitars and the second descending into darkness over pulsing 808s. The initial, longer movement opens with Del Rey putting some distance between herself and childhood. “I haven’t done a cartwheel since I was nine,” she coos, “I haven’t seen my mother in a long, long time.”
When she gets to the hook, the beauty belies the acid in the words, as she sings, “Call ’em up, come in to my bedroom/ Ended up, we fuck on the hotеl floor/ It’s not about having someone to love mе anymore/ This is the experience of being an American whore.”

Lana Del Rey has taken petty to the next level after the singer revealed she put up just one billboard to promote her new album… in her ex-boyfriend’s hometown.
Earlier this month, the “Video Games” singer announced her ninth studio album, titled Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, will be dropping on 10 March 2023. Along with the announcement, Del Rey released the album’s title track.
While many artists go to great lengths to promote their forthcoming projects, Lana Del Rey has taken things to the next level. On her private Instagram page, called @honeymoon, the 37-year-old singer posted a selfie with the billboard and revealed its location.
“There’s only one and it’s in Tulsa,” she captioned the post, referring to the Oklahoma city that’s home to her ex-boyfriend Sean Larkin.
