Wyatt Russell has not been shy when talking about his great experience working with his father, legendary actor Kurt Russell, on the Apple TV+ drama “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” But one question he’s frequently asked doesn’t have a satisfying answer.
“Normally, I’m asked, ‘What did you learn from your dad?’ And the answer to that is, ‘nothing,’ because I grew up with him,” Wyatt tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. But ask Wyatt what insights he gleaned from working with Kurt on the show to build the character Lee Shaw – the army veteran at the center of a decades-spanning mystery within the MonsterVerse franchise universe – and that’s a different story.

Even now, months after she wrapped production on Season 1 of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” breakout star Mari Yamamoto gets admittedly emotional while talking about the show’s finale.
The actress plays Keiko Mura, a Japanese scientist who, in the 1950s, helped start the organization Monarch alongside Bill Randa (Anders Holm) and Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell) to understand and study Godzilla and other Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). But after a mission gone wrong, Keiko is presumed dead and is only later discovered to have survived, barely aged for decades, within a part of Hollow Earth she’s coined Axis Mundi. It’s there, in the show’s finale, where Keiko reunites with an elder Lee and realizes that her 57 days spent in Axis Mundi have translated to literal decades on Earth.

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November into January (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes Here), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will indeed be getting a second season – and during an interview with Screen Rant, cast member Anna Sawai said she’s hoping to get to work on season 2 very soon.
When asked for an update on the status of the show, Sawai said, “I can’t tell you anything, because I actually don’t know what’s going on. I literally got the call that it’s going to be renewed,...

Since his brief appearance in the 2011 MCU film Thor, Hawkeye has become a staple member of the Avengers, featuring in nearly all of the team’s cinematic outings. Over the years, the character has undergone significant development, diverging from his initial portrayal in the MCU. The 2021 Disney+ series, which delved into the aftermath of Endgame, shed light on the toll his role as an Avenger has taken on him, addressing both mental and physical challenges, along with his use of a hearing aid.
Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in the MCU
While the series depicted his hearing loss due to the frequent explosions he’s encountered as an Avenger, the comics offer a more harrowing and graphic account of how the superhero sustained this injury. As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters star Wyatt Russell has had several opportunities to work alongside his father Kurt over the years, but the younger Russell insisted on establishing himself on his own first.
On the Chris Black- and Matt Fraction-created Monarch, the father-and-son duo share the role of Lee Shaw, a U.S. Army colonel and onetime Monarch agent who’s been tracking the emergence of MonsterVerse Titans since the early 1950s. The two Russells put a great deal of thought into their portrayals in order to ensure that Kurt’s version of Lee in 2015 felt like a logical extension of Wyatt’s character from the ‘50s.
Ultimately, the 37-year-old Russell is glad he waited as long as he did to collaborate with his father.

VFX supervisor Sean Konrad was tasked with bringing to life some iconic titans back for Apple TV+’s ten-part series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” Among them are “Kong: Skull Island’s” Mother Longlegs and Godzilla, as well as some new monsters, including a crab-inspired titan and star-mole beast.
Showrunner and co-creator Chris Black had always wanted to open the series on Skull Island to root the viewer in familiarity without having to rewatch past films. The opening episode sees Bill Randa (John Goodman) being chased through a bamboo forest that opens out onto a rock peninsula before Mother Longlegs emerges. Moments later, a giant rock crab creature known as Mantleclaw comes out of the ground, and a battle between the two monsters begins. For Black and Konrad, it was a way of paying homage to the MonsterVerse lore and allowed them to draw from the Hawaiian location.

Godzilla fans are eating really well right now. Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise continues to grow as big as their stars, as the first entry started with 2014’s Godzilla, then continued with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, then 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and finally bringing the gargantuas face-to-face in 2020’s Godzilla vs Kong. Apple TV+ has also recently premiered Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which chronicles the secret agency that investigates and polices the activity of these ancient beasts. Add to that the recent release of the critically and audience-acclaimed Japanese film, Godzilla Minus One, currently in theaters. And this past weekend, Warner Bros. released the trailer for a new Monsterverse film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Created by Chris Black (“Severance”) and Matt Fraction (“Hawkeye”), the limited series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” is an intelligent extension of the blockbusters-sized big-screen franchise where it came from. At the heart of Legendary’s Monsterverse are monsters, sure, but a mystery rooted in human complication. And ‘Legacy of Monsters’ is wise enough to lean into the human-scale dramas behind those legacies, those mysteries, and what compelled them to take shape.

The Monsterverse is coming up on a decade now, dating back to director Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014. But in all of those years, the human characters in the franchise have often left much to be desired. Fortunately, the Monsterverse has finally figured out this piece of the puzzle. The key? Kurt Russell. "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is currently in the midst of its first season on Apple TV+ and Russell's character Lee Shaw is easily the best human character we've had against the backdrop of this world of monsters.
In nine years of the Monsterverse, we've had some extremely memorable monster action, including one heck of a showdown between Godzilla and King Kong in 2021's aptly named "Godzilla vs. Kong." The humans? That's a different story. Oftentimes, these characters feel like vehicles that are just driving us toward the next monster showdown.

[This story contains mild spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’s second episode, “Departure.”]
It hadn’t occurred to Matt Shakman until now that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and WandaVision both handed him a similar assignment. In each case, the sought-after director had to lead a successful film franchise into television for the first time and explore existing in-universe events from a new point of view. In Shakman’s defense, Marvel Studios’ WandaVision was originally supposed to release after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but the latter needed reshoots, thus turning Wanda into Marvel Studios’ first series on Disney+.
In any event, Shakman’s experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe served Monarch well, as he knew exactly how to tell intimate character stories alongside the grand scale of the Godzilla and Kong-led MonsterVerse.
“From doing WandaVision, I absolutely learned so much about telling personal stories set against a big large canvas,” Shakman tells The Hollywood Reporter.
It hadn’t occurred to Matt Shakman until now that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and WandaVision both handed him a similar assignment. In each case, the sought-after director had to lead a successful film franchise into television for the first time and explore existing in-universe events from a new point of view. The Apple TV+ series is based on Godzilla and serves as the sixth installment in the MonsterVerse. It revolves around the members of an organization called Monarch and it spans over three generations and almost half a decade. The main story follows the events after Godzilla and MUTOs epic battle in 2015 that destroyed San Francisco.
The new Apple TV+ series will finally shed light on the mysterious Monarch organization, and with that, we will also see how humans reacted to the discovery of Titans and how they continue to react.

More than just a series set in the Monsterverse, focused on Titan creatures such as Godzilla and other MUTOs, Apple TV+’s new series “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters” focuses on the more human/familial aspects of the universe that spans over many decades.
The main thread of the series is the story of two siblings learning about their father’s secret life and his ties to a mysterious organization called Monarch. They end up discovering much more than they anticipated in regard to their father’s research, new Titans, and their tie to the origins of Monarch.

We recently sat down for an exclusive interview with “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” producer Tory Tunnell to talk about her word on the series. Tunnell’s husband Joby Harold is also an executive producer on the series. Together both Tunnell and Harold run the production company Safehouse Pictures.

Since the beginning of the Monsterverse films with Gareth Edward’s 2014 “Godzilla” film, visual effects supervisor Sean Korad has always played an integral role in bringing the Titan’s to life on screen. Konrad went on to work on 2019’s “Godzilla: King Of The Monsters” and has now taken on the role of visual effects supervisor for the new Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters”.
The new series follows a family story that spans across continents over a 65 year time period. It picks up right after the events of 2014’s “Godzilla” film where the city of San Francisco is destroyed after Godzilla’s epic battle with the Muto’s.
We caught up with “Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters” VFX supervisor, Sean Konrad to discuss the making of the new series, the creation of new Titans and more.

In the first episode of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, viewers were introduced to Lee Shaw circa 1959, back when he was an Army lieutenant tasked with “keeping alive” researchers Dr. Keiko Mira and Bill Randa (played by Mari Yamamoto and Anders Holm) as they go Muto hunting in Kazakhstan.
In that timeline, Lee is played by Wyatt Russell of TV’s Lodge 49 and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

This post contains spoilers for "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters."
Apple TV+ is getting into the kaiju business with the new Legendary MonsterVerse series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and we couldn't be more excited. The new show isn't the first TV series in the long-running Godzilla franchise, but it's the first big-budget live-action American show, and as such, it's got plenty to prove to fans of big creatures that love to stomp all over humankind.
The first two episodes of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" just dropped on the streamer, and while they're plenty intriguing on their own merits, they also tie directly into previous movies in the American saga that started with 2014's "Godzilla." That movie came out nearly a decade ago, though, and the multiple timelines and new cast members in "Monarch" mean even the most loyal fans will be downloading a lot of new information while trying to keep track of the old stuff.

If there's any one rule that good monster movies (or shows) need, it's this: They need to effectively convey a sense of scale. Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim," as silly as it became at times, was pretty effective at capturing the full weight and sheer size of the combatants during the film's many knock-down, drag-out tussles. And in a similar (though much more grounded) way, Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" accomplished much the same thing -- just with a far grander and more mythic tonal approach. The new Apple TV+ spin-off series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is very much taking its cues from that 2014 movie.
Although the show hails from the main creative trio of Chris Black, Matt Fraction, and Matt Shakman, the production also counts a few holdovers from "Godzilla" among its crew, as well. One of them is VFX supervisor Sean Konrad, whom /Film's Ryan Scott recently interviewed. Of...

[This story contains spoilers for the first two episodes of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.]
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ team knows there are big expectations behind their entry in the Legendary monster franchise, home to Godzilla, King Kong and more Titans.
But during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter following their New York Comic Con panel last month, showrunner Chris Black and executive producer Matt Fraction said they weren’t intentionally trying to match the scale or even focus of Legendary’s monster movies. Instead, Black — a TV veteran — and Fraction, a writer with a hefty resume in the world of Marvel comics, were more interested in how the medium could help support — not hinder — the kind of story they could tell within the MonsterVerse.
“In the movies, the risk is always, ‘Are the protagonists going to die?’ In television, there’s 10 episodes. This is our cast, and we don’t want to get rid of them in episode four,” Fraction says.

Godzilla has come to represent a lot of things to a lot of people. Our lizard king first and foremost expresses mass fears surrounding nuclear fallout. More recently, he’s symbolized the catastrophic, segregating effects of global terrorism. But sometimes, to some people, he’s just a big ol’ lonely boy — his only friends are fragile little dolls, his contemporaries all want to kill him, and pretty much everyone would rather he just go away for good.
Except audiences. Sparked by Gareth Edwards’ 2014 “Godzilla,” Americans have shown up for Toho Co. and Legendary’s Monsterverse movies to the tune of nearly $2 billion in worldwide box office. Even “Godzilla vs. Kong” — which not only came out during the pre-vaccine Covid era, but was also available via HBO Max at the same time — drew almost half-a-billion dollars. Clearly, there’s an appetite for monster battles that’s nearly as big as those monsters.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may owe its greatest debt not to Toho, nor even the previous entries in the Monster-Verse, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. No, the most important movie for the new show from Apple TV+ is Soldier. Yes, Soldier, the 1998 sci-flick directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
Because in Soldier, Kurt Russell played the same character as his son Wyatt, as the latter portrays the 11-year-old version of the lifelong warrior Todd 3465. The duo repeat that feat in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters by playing Lee Shaw at two points in the man’s life. The elder Russell plays Shaw in the present, as part of the research group Monarch, dealing with the revelation of monsters in 2014’s Godzilla. The younger Russell plays Shaw in the 1950s, connecting the series to the golden age of Kaiju cinema.

After two Godzilla films, a Kong solo outing, and a crossover smackdown, Legendary is expanding its Monsterverse franchise. The first season of Monarch debuted today on AppleTV+ with two episodes and there will be surprises in store for weeks to come.

Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse now has its own spinoff series on Apple TV+ with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and it’s aiming to capture the hearts of those kaiju fans invested in the production company’s shared cinematic universe. The MonsterVerse fandom has arguably split itself into two camps over the years, with one side more keen on the serious and dramatic Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, while the other gravitates to its more ludicrous fare, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Monarch is definitely for the former camp, but even if you’re in neither, Apple and Legendary are hoping that you’re enthralled enough by the films’ central scientific organization that you’ll happily sit through an entire series about it as long as you occasionally get to see a titan or two in action. In that way, it reminds me of a little show called Agents of Shield,...

In 2014’s “Godzilla,” San Francisco endures unparalleled destruction. That damage and its aftermath figures heavily in the new Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which picks up after the events of the film and tells a sprawling tale about the title monster — and many others — in a story that spans decades. The series focuses predominantly on two timelines in the 1950s and 2010s and is kicked off by Anna Sawai’s Cate as she ventures from the ravaged San Francisco to Tokyo, a trip that leads her into the history of the Monarch organization. The series premieres on Nov. 17.
Critics have been impressed by this “grandly ambitious” series. As of this writing, it has a 90% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes, with their critical consensus reading, “With performances by father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell that work a charm, ‘Monarch’ adds a welcome wrinkle to the Godzilla legacy by honing...

Godzilla is stomping onto streaming this week with his first live-action television series on Apple TV+.
“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” takes place within the MonsterVerse, established by 2014’s “Godzilla” and continued through with “Kong: Skull Island” in 2017, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” in 2019 and “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021. But the series smartly shifts focus to Monarch, the mysterious organization that, we learn in the show, has been monitoring these giant creatures since the 1950s.
A pair of half-siblings (Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe) are looking into the disappearance of their father following Godzilla’s arrival on the scene and are drawn into the mystery of Monarch and a shadowy figure who was there for the agency’s formation.
Created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction, the first two episodes of the show were directed by Matt Shakman, who directed all of “WandaVision” and has helmed episodes of “Game of Thrones,...

It is no small thing to take a franchise that is rooted in cinematic storytelling and scale it down for TV. But that's exactly what was asked of the team behind "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," which premieres on Apple TV+ this week. Taking place in the MonsterVerse alongside movies such as "Godzilla" (2014) and "Kong: Skull Island," the series brings the King of the Monsters (and many other monsters) to the world of streaming.
The show takes place after the events of Gareth Edwards' 2014 film, but it also brings us back five decades earlier to show us the origins of Monarch, the mysterious organization that studies these giant creatures. It's an ambitious storyline that spans generations, with Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell playing the same character in different eras. We're also talking about stretching a story out across ten episodes, not just two hours. It's a lot.

Make no mistake: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a story about the towering and terrifying kaiju that have, throughout the years, fascinated and enthralled legions of fans — so much so that a dedicated “Monsterverse” has been created for the characters and its films. But the new Apple TV+ series, which debuts November 17, is also something more: It’s a multi-generational story about family, connection, and legacy — and according to series co-creator Matt Fraction, that was the reason to create the show at all. “We can’t compete with the scale and spectacle of the movie — the worst thing we can do is make 10 small versions of that,” Fraction tells TV Insider. “So, how do you tell 10 hours of story? We have to start with the people.” In this case, the people are Kurt Russell‘s ex-Army officer Lee Shaw (whose younger 1950s self is — in a brilliant casting fashion — played...

As suggested by its name, Legendary’s Monsterverse has, historically, been first and foremost about the monsters. Sure, the films have always had human casts to fight the creatures or flee from them or deliver reams of exposition about them. But Godzilla is the point of Godzilla, not Bryan Cranston or Aaron Taylor-Johnson; the Godzilla vs. Kong battle is the centerpiece of Godzilla vs. Kong, not whatever Millie Bobby Brown or Alexander Skarsgård’s characters were trying to accomplish.
What makes for a delicious two-hour spectacle on a 70-foot IMAX screen doesn’t necessarily make for an engaging 10-episode drama on a 40-inch TV, though, and therein lies the challenge of Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The bad news for monster nerds is that the Titans (Godzilla and Kong, among others) are less the star of the show this time around. The good news is that perhaps for...

Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead For The End Of “The Marvels”
While the mid-credits scene of “The Marvels” introduced some (technically) new faces to the MCU, the final minutes brought the return of another: Kate Bishop. It also pretty explicitly set up the Young Avengers‘ entrance into the MCU — something Iman Vellani, who stars in the film as Kamala Khan, considered “an honor” to be responsible for.

It’s not Godzilla or King Kong that serves as the connective tissue in Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, but the secret government agency tasked with studying them: Monarch.
