With even most features struggling to get the big screen limelight they so often deserve these days, it’s harder still to get shorts played big and loud. Once again FrightFest delivers though, with another three feature-length showcases of short-form goodness, giving a platform to some of the most exciting up-and-coming genre filmmakers on the planet.
Here’s this writer’s stand-outs, from another densely packed year:
Kicking things off with Chris McInroy’s tonally perfect, and utterly disgusting workplace splatter comedy Guts; a bold and terrifically performed sketch about what it means to have guts (in every sense of the word) that milks a single joke for all it’s worth beautifully.
The same can be said for smartly devised and shot black comedy Cruise, from director Sam Rudykoff, a tight one room concept that builds wonderfully to a laugh-out-loud kicker of a punchline.

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

Downton Abbey has had a long and exciting run.
We had six seasons of, holiday-themed specials, and two movies.
Hugh Bonneville, who has been with the franchise since the beginning, thinks the franchise could be over after the latest movie.
“I suspect, if there is [a new series], it would be a reboot. An origin story or something like that,” the star said to The Hollywood Reporter of rumors of a TV comeback.
The star said that Bridgerton highlighted that "there's clearly an appetite for these sorts of shows."
"Bridgerton has been a magnificent success,” he continued.
“So if you can capture the younger generation to enjoy people in frocks, then go for it.”
Bonneville went on to state that it is "immensely unlikely" the original cast would return for future projects.

The “Doctor” is still in, as Marvel’s latest film continues to lead the box office against some very proper competition.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another 8.5 million to its box office total on Friday, bumping its cumulative gross up to 318 million. Meanwhile, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” is estimated to end the weekend with 18 million.
“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the second film spin-off of the beloved U.K. series, raked in a solid 1 million in previews on Thursday from 3,300 theaters. But its weekend estimates won’t be enough to dethrone “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is looking to top the domestic box office charts for a third weekend. Alex Garland’s horror film “Men” also opens this weekend, but looks to have a soft start with only 1,411,853 from 1,800 screens on Friday.
The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, grossed more than 190 million at the global box office.

Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). It’s certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 Audience score and 83 Critics score. Tracking to a mid-to-low teens opening.
This is the second cinematic outing of the phenomenon that aired for six seasons Stateside on PBS (2011-2020) and reunites the full cast.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.
Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

The beloved drama series “Downton Abbey” now has a second feature film (“Downton Abbey: A New Era”) ready to rake in a fortune. It’s been over a decade since it burst upon the television scene, so we’ve recently revisited the wonderful world of the British historical drama to rank the greatest 25 episodes in the photo gallery above. It’s true that this series is a melodrama, perhaps even a glorified soap opera. But its central theme is change, and how real-life historic events, as well as personal joys and crises, affect the fictional aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in England during the pivotal years 1912-1926.
The six seasons of “Downton” begins with the sinking of the “Titanic” in April of 1912, and the impact it has on the Crawley family, who has presided over the estate for generations. Several stories swirl at once, with dramas surrounding both the...

Downton Abbey, more than anything else, boasts a wonderful ensemble cast, with such a vast myriad of different characters, both upstairs and down, that make up this world that has become so globally popular. To mark the release of the eagerly anticipated sequel, titled ‘A New Era’, we had the pleasure a fair few of them, and yet still barely scratched the surface. Yet we were thrilled to spend time with so many, interviewing Tuppence Middleton, Robert-James Collier, Laura Carmichael & Allen Leech, where we discussed shooting in France, whether they have a Downton WhatsApp group, and of course on collaborating with screen icon Maggie Smith.
We then sat down with Hugh Dancy, Michelle Dockery, Raquel Cassidy & Kevin Doyle to speak about the allure of Downton, whether new members of the cast have to face any initiations – and whether fans of the franchise could be in line for a third cinematic outing…...

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” is bookended by a wedding and a funeral. In between, a good deal happens: Babies are born and paternities questioned, long-simmering romances clinched and fresh ones set to bloom; an excursion takes a fraction of the family to France while a film crew keeps the rest of them busy back home. It all adds up to rather more than audiences of 2019’s standalone “Downton Abbey” feature must have expected, if only because the earlier film seemed conspicuously uninterested in starting anything new.
That’s the trouble with television — from a film critic’s perspective, at least. Movies are by their nature story-obsessed — plot-driven locomotives, compelled by conflict, engineered to reach a tidy resolution of some kind within two hours or so. On TV, on the other hand, once a small-screen world has been established, it’s designed to remain open-ended from episode to episode and season to season,...

The “Downton Abbey” sequel follows Julian Fellowes’ 2019 film and six seasons on BBC. While plot details have remained under wraps, we do spot the Crawleys visiting a new villa in the South of France, which Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) is said to have inherited. Fans are also expecting to learn more about Violet’s past in the latest installment.
Returning stars include Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Jim Carter.
Meanwhile, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye, and Dominic West make their “Downton” debuts as new characters.
Creator Fellowes previously described the sequel as following Lady Mary (Dockery) as she takes over the duties for Lady Violet following her illness. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s,...

Focus Features has pushed back the release of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” two months and the sequel will now be released on May 20, the company announced Wednesday.
The sequel was previously scheduled for release on March 18. The film will be released in the U.K. by Universal on April 29.
While plot details for the film have been sparse, writer Julian Fellowes told People that Lady Mary continues to run Downton as the mother of the next Earl of Grantham.
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further,” Fellowes said. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”
