Warning: this A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
They may be magical creatures ruled by mystical rites, but when it comes to family, the vampires, witches and daemons are no different from the rest of us. Gather the clan together under one roof and pretty soon it’s all rivalry, resentment and stalking out of dinner in a huff. One brother doesn’t like his new sister-in-law, the youngest wants the eldest to move with the times. ‘You’re breaking an ancient covenant’, ‘You didn’t tell me I carried a genetic disease that turned my vampire children into uncontrollably vicious monsters’… All the usual beef. The only difference is that the de Clermonts get to do it in all a stunningly lit castle over a glass of what must be excellent wine.
Season three got off to a mournful start as Diana and Matthew time-walked straight to poor Aunt Em’s death bed.

It’s the beginning of the end on A Discovery of Witches. In the TV adaptation’s third and final season, Diana and Matthew return to the present to face a personal tragedy and deep political division among the creatures. The forces of conservatism seek to preserve the separation between vampires, witches and daemons; while reformers wish to dismantle the status quo. Threats from the Book of Life, the Oxford blood-rage killer, the Congregation and Peter Knox all continue, while Diana comes into her prophesied role as the witch who will change everything.
Joining the existing characters in the ongoing battle are newcomers Fernando (Olivier Huband), Ransome (Parker Sawyers), Geraldine (Genesis Lynea), Dr Roberts (Ivanno Jeremiah), and actor Toby Regbo. Season three also welcomes Peter McDonald, who takes over the existing role of Baldwin St Clair from Trystan Gravelle. Find out more about them all below, with mild spoilers right at the end.

Warning: contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches season 2 episode 8.
Near the end of A Discovery of Witches season two, episode eight, Peter Knox walks into the hospital room where new parents Sophie and Nathaniel are recovering from the birth of their daughter Margaret. As a powerful witch who represents his people on political assembly the Congregation, he’s there to verify that the baby is – as he’s been told – a witch born to daemons, and then to kidnap the child so that she can be raised by her own species.
Knox holds up a small carved ball, which instantly stops Nathaniel in his tracks and drags him over the floor where he collapses at Knox’s feet. The witch then flourishes the ball at Sophie, and as he utters the command ‘sleep’, it emits a wave of energy that also knocks her unconscious.
We’ve seen Knox work magic of this kind before.

Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected places.
Two years ago, AMC Networks executives were impressed with the performance of the first season of a low-profile genre series co-produced in the U.K. with Comcast’s Sky that premiered on AMC’s arthouse-y streaming service Sundance Now in January 2019. “A Discovery of Witches” has become the little engine that could for the streaming service that has been around in one form or another since 2014.
Last year, when the coronavirus outbreak up-ended the entertainment business landscape, the performance of Season 1 of “Discovery” greatly influenced the thinking of AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan and chief operation officer Ed Carroll on how to respond to sudden change in business conditions.
“It’s amazing what a difference a year makes,” Carroll told Variety. “After the year that we’ve had, we’ve decided to heavy-up on our investment in SVOD.”

This A Discovery of Witches article contains spoilers for the ending of Season 1.
A Discovery of Witches, like Outlander, is one of the few big-budget genre TV shows that is also unabashedly romance. Based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, the screen adaptation follows Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian and witch who, after discovering a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodelian Library, is pulled further into a world of magic and danger she has been trying to avoid since she was young. In the process, she meets and falls in love with geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), and the two become caught in the middle of the long-running tensions between witches and vampires.

Other creatures need to catch onto the idea that magic is ruled by a witch's heart before attacking anyone Diana loves.
On A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 8, Juliette discovered that nugget the hard way when she tried to put an end to Matthew out of spite and jealousy.
What Juliette did to Matthew was worthy of Diana's best magical retaliation, but nobody expected her powers to keep growing.
Like Villanelle on the Killing Eve Season 2 finale, Juliette didn't let love get in the way of her vengeance over getting spurned.
She literally tore right into Matthew, leaving him for dead. Taunting Diana that her magic wouldn't save Matthew didn't earn her any extra points, either.
Diana might not have a full understanding of her magic, but when the situation arises, she pulls all of the elements together and finds a way to persevere.
Diana: Maiden, mother, crone, I call you.

There is no turning back.
Something that sets Deborah Harkness' vampires apart from others got revealed on A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 5 when Matthew declared his love for Diana.
What woman wouldn't want to suffer through a slightly grizzly eating habbit to get a piece of a vampire??
This is an important hour not only because of that good stuff (of which we will be speaking more about shortly) but also because Matthew discovered Gillian's betrayal of Diana as well as some details about Diana's genetic makeup.
The more her own species turns on her, the more protective Matthew becomes, and it's not something the witches or the others in the Congregation seem to understand.
If their goal is to drive apart Matthew and Diana, they're doing the opposite.
It makes me sick that she'd debase herself with a vampire. He was right. The sooner you're all wiped...

The first trailer for A Discovery of Witches premiered all the way back in June 2018, and immediately passionate fans of the first book in Deborah Harkness's bestselling All Souls trilogy were eager to see the adaptation hit the small screen. Unfortunately, for American audiences, the wait for the series has been longer than initially expected - the first season aired in full on the UK's Sky network months ago but only just premiered on AMC and BBC America in the Us on April 7.
Regardless of whether you're in the Us or the UK, you're likely wondering the same thing: will there be a second season of A Discovery of Witches? The short answer is . . . yes! In fact, the series has already been renewed for season three, as well. But details about when either of the seasons will premiere are still murky.

In the year 2019, a show about vampires, witches, and/or demons might not sound like it's breaking any new ground. But BBC America's A Discovery of Witches, which is an adaptation of the first book in Deborah Harkness's bestselling All Souls trilogy, manages to give its female protagonist agency in a way that other series in the same supernatural space have historically struggled with.
Leading the show is Teresa Palmer, whose acting talents have lit up everything from war dramas (Hacksaw Ridge) to horror films (Lights Out) to zombie comedies (Warm Bodies). The Australian star brings her irresistible magnetism to A Discovery of Witches' heroine Diana, a Yale professor visiting Oxford (who is also a reluctant witch) who accidentally unlocks an important, enchanted manuscript in the school's library that leads her onto the path of a handsome, centuries-old vampire named Matthew (The Crown's Matthew Goode). A Discovery of Witches is brewing a slow-simmer success. The supernatural drama made its commercial television debut last Sunday night on AMC and BBC America (9:00 Pm Et/Pt) with a cast led by Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge), Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Valarie Pettiford (Being Mary Jane), and Owen Teale (Game of Thrones). After his Emmy nomination last year for The Crown, Goode might rank as the most illustrious name from the show’s ensemble but make no mistake: A Discovery Of Witches is a television adaptation that echoes with the female voice in every phase.

It's entirely possible you've already seen this romantic supernatural series tinged with mystery and suspense.
A Discovery of Witches Season 1 Episode 1 first aired internationally. For the United States, I saw the premiere at Nycc this past October before it first appeared on Sundance Now and Shudder.
Finally, those of you who aren't nimble enough to find all of the good stuff on streaming services outside Netflix and Hulu can feast your eyes on the fiery relationship between a witch and vampire.
If you've read the books in the All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life, then you're probably already familiar with this story, and you most likely have already watched it once or twice.
Author Deborah Harkness managed to write a romantic storyline between a witch and a vampire that didn't feel like all of the other similar material out there.

Edward Bluemel is set to take Sundays in the United States by storm.

Based on Deborah Harkness' novel by the same name, A Discovery of Witches tells the story of historian Diana (Teresa Palmer) and scientist Matthew (Matthew Goode) who also happens to be a vampire, might I add, that is hiding some pretty dark secrets. When Diana discovers an enchanted manuscript at the Oxford Bodleia Library, she finds herself immersed into a world beyond anyone's wildest dreams. The series will air simultaneously on both Sundance Now and Shudder on Thursday, January 17th in the U.S. and in Canada.

Will A Discovery of Witches do more than just hit the familiar marks of supernatural fiction? Or will that be enough?
This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
A Discovery of Witches Episode 1
This review comes from Den of Geek UK.
There’s a certain book that I’ve been drawn back to over and over again since it was published in 2016. It’s called Meetings With Remarkable Manuscripts, by Christopher De Hamel, and it’s about some of the oldest and most beautiful books in the world. These are the kind of books that have a fascinating history, and De Hamel tells us a lot about the past by travelling to see, maybe even touch, them. But what I like most is that he also tells us what it’s like to be close to these books, now, after they have survived for so long.
