Winner of Best Feature Film in last years Red Sea International Film Festival and one of the 20 Best West-Central Asian Films of 2022 in our list in Asian Movie Pulse, “Hanging Gardens” continues its effort to be included in the nominations for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, as Iraq's official selection.
Film Review: Hanging Gardens (2022) by Ahmed Yassin Al Daradji
As Panos Kotzathanasis wrote about the film last year, Ahmed Yassin Al Daradji creates a film that retains an excellent balance between a coming-of-age movie and a commentary about life in present Iraq, all the while entertaining his audience through both humor and drama. Evidently, the concept of the two young ‘pimps' of a sex doll is what sets the story apart through its uniqueness, but this is just the top of the iceberg of a rather layered narrative that “hides” many of its comments inside its details.

Bengaluru, Aug 28 (Ians) The Hubli Tigers stormed into the finals of the Maharaja Trophy Ksca T20, riding a 114-run partnership between Md. Taha (69) and K.L Shrijith (61 not out) beat Shivamogga Lions by 8 wickets with six overs to spare in the first semifinal.
After the Shivamogga Lions were put in to bat in the first semifinal against Hubli Tigers, openers Rohan Kadam (54 off 44 balls) and Nihal Ullal (7) were off to a quiet start scoring 37 runs without losing any wicket.
Hubli landed the first blow in the seventh over as Mitrakanth Yadav got rid of Nihal Ullal cheaply bringing Vinay Sagar (13) to the crease.
Runs were hard to come by for the Shivamogga Lions with the Hubli bowlers bowling tight lines and their fielders backing them up. The pressure built by the bowlers paid off as Rohan Kadam was dismissed by Manvanth Kumar in the 12th over soon after reaching his half-century.

Bengaluru, Aug 22 (Ians) The Hubli Tigers brought up their sixth win of the Maharaja Trophy Ksca T20, beating the Bengaluru Blasters by 6 wickets with 9 balls to spare.
A fine century stand between Mayank Agarwal (68) and D. Nischal (54) for Bengaluru went in vain as the Hubli batters came out all guns blazing, with Md. Taha led the way scoring a 35-ball 66.
On winning the toss, the Bengaluru Blasters elected to bat first. Bhuvan Raju (6) fell in the first over to V. Kaverappa, but Nischal (54) and Mayank Agarwal (68) looked to be in fine form as they powered the Bengaluru Blasters to 52/1 at the end of the powerplay.
While Nischal led the onslaught in the first six overs, Mayank Agarwal broke the shackles in the next phase of the game. His inning saw him clear the ropes on six occasions and his rapid-fire half-century came as quick as 34 balls while Nischal reached the milestone in 38 deliveries.

The innocence of childhood crashes into the reality of a filthy adult world in Hanging Gardens. The title refers not to an ancient wonder but to an enormous dump on the edge of Baghdad. This is where 12-year-old As’ad (a magnetic Hussain Muhammad Jalil) picks through the rubbish with his adult brother Taha (Wissam Diyaa), bundling it into bags for the local kingpin Al Haji (Jawad Al Shakarji), whose mere presence is enough to make the local coffee house fall silent.
For all that the dump could have been plucked from Dante, with smouldering fires and flies a constant presence even during mealtimes, there’s a camaraderie between the two brothers as they work. First-time feature director Ahmed Yassin Al Daradji lets both the humour and the horror of the situation emerge in tandem. While As’ad and Taha might laugh about a discarded dress, they also make a grimmer find that.

Iranian director Vahid Jalilvand’s psychological thriller “Beyond the Wall,” which premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival, was described in the Variety review as a “morbidly violent allegory for the effects of state-sponsored trauma on the individual that places contemporary Iranian society somewhere on the map between the sixth and seventh circles of hell.”
Since the film’s premiere, protests in Iran have raged following the killing of Mahsa Amini, and have been met with savage violence from the state. Jalilvand tells Variety via a videolink from Tehran it is difficult to say what the outcome of the tumult will be, but, he adds: “The thing I am sure of is Iran will not return to how it was three months ago, before these protests started. It won’t go back. People have gained a spirit of fighting for their inalienable rights, and this won’t go back – it is irreversible now.

Nobody emerges unscathed — least of all the audience — from Vahid Jalilvand’s highly effective, deeply unpleasant “Beyond the Wall,” a morbidly violent allegory for the effects of state-sponsored trauma on the individual that places contemporary Iranian society somewhere on the map between the sixth and seventh circles of hell. A strange combination of intricate, almost sci-fi-inflected psychological thriller, splenetic social-breakdown broadside and two-hander (torture) chamber drama, it is an exercise in bravura filmmaking applied to a story so relentlessly grim you might wish it were a little less well-made, giving you an excuse to look away. In his 2017 film “No Date No Signature” (which won Best Director and Best Actor in Venice’s Horizons sidebar), Jalilvand pictured a stratified society teetering on the edge of legality and morality; here, however, it has toppled entirely into the abyss. The only way is down, and the filmmaker is bringing you with it.

Mysore, Aug 12 (Ians) Rohan Patil continued to be in dominant form with the bat and was aided by Devdutt Padikkal as they both got half-centuries, helping the Gulbarga Mystics register a thumping 9-wicket win over the Hubli Tigers in a Maharaja Trophy Twenty20 cricket tournament match, here on Friday.
Asked to bat first, the Hubli Tigers got off to a great start, scoring at good clip as openers Luvnith Sisodia (30) and Taha (15) made good use of the powerplay. However, the 32-run stand lasted just a shade under four overs, before Taha was dismissed.
Just as the Tigers crossed 50, Sisodia was walking back to the hut, and was followed soon by Bu Shiva Kumar (8) and Swapnil Yelave (5).
At 59/4 in 10 overs, Hubli were in a spot of bother and needed rescuing. Tushar Singh and Naveen Mg stepped up to the plate with solid contributions of 42 from 32 deliveries and 24 from 16, respectively. The duo put on a 44-run stand,...
