Motion Picture Exchange has acquired worldwide sales rights on the coming-of-age horror film “Student Body,” and will be launching it out of the Cannes Virtual Market next week.
Written and directed by Lee Ann Kurr in her feature debut, the film features Montse Hernandez, Cheyenne Haynes (“Camping”), Harley Quinn Smith, Austin Zajur (“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”), Anthony Keyvan, and Christian Camargo. “Student Body” is produced by the breakout, all female creative team of Rachel Liu, Sandra Leviton and Kurr.
The story centers around high school student Jane Shipley (Hernandez), who seeks to mend her splintering relationship with childhood best friend Merritt (Haynes), and fit in with Merritt’s rebellious clique. When Jane’s math teacher (Camargo) oversteps his bounds, an apathetic high school administration forces Jane and Merritt to take matters into their own hands, driving their relationship into further turmoil and inciting deadly consequences.

Premiering at the Cannes Film festival earlier this year, John Cameron Mitchell’s fourth feature takes excellent source material and top talent on a wild ride in “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” Based on a short story by Neil Gaiman, whose fantastical work has been adapted to mixed results over the years. In the first international trailer, Fanning and her co-star Alex Sharp flirt oddly and adorably, and Nicole Kidman appears to be having a lot of fun.

There’s been a lot of anticipation for this film by John Cameron Mitchell, who brought us the entertaining Hedwig and the Angry Inch and the sombre and moving Rabbit Hole. Mitchell returns to the punk territory of the former, but unfortunately with less success.
We’re in Croydon in 1977. Punk is at its height and Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her silver jubilee. This choice of 1977 gives the director plenty of Union Jacks and street parties to set against the iconic Sex Pistols song and record cover, which he uses consistently throughout the film. Our hero is Enn (Alex Sharp): he’s being raised by his single mum, his jazz musician dad having abandoned the family ship years earlier. With his two best mates, the chubby and cerebral John (Ethan Lawrence) and the Billy Idol lookalike Vic (Abraham Lewis), the three schoolboys have embraced punk.
