As I descended slowly from the heights of our cinematic cocoon, a mild confusion took over. Having heard so much about Zack Snyder's Superman reboot Man of Steel, I had, quite rightly, been expecting so much. There was a smorgasbord of talent, a budget worthy of the big Super himself and Christopher Nolan - who had co-produced and co-wrote the feature - so what could possibly go wrong? Better still, as a Superman reboot coming after the end of Warner Bros.' gripping origins series Smallville, I was sure that Man of Steel would do justice to both Superman's legacy and the complexity of his tale.
However, despite a strong review from Shadowlocked's go-to comic book expert Caleb Leland, I myself was unimpressed with Snyder's re-imagining of the man from Krypton. As the tale progressed my interest waned - Superman's holier than thou image grinding rather than gratifying -...

As a fan of horror movies, it frightens me how mediocre most of the offerings Hollywood has given us have become. While most of the premises of these films seem to have some promise, the execution of said stories is usually weak, creating few - if any - scares and basically distributing horror-by-numbers presentations that may play well to casual viewers. But for the true horror fan, they leave much to be desired. Horror is becoming far too formulaic, latching on to trends, following certain patterns in film structure, and basically taming the films for younger audiences to assure ticket sales. It certainly makes one wonder where the future of horror films lies.
But as my co-writer Richard Cosgrove has said, it may be time to put the zombie back in the crypt, and perhaps with them the vampire. At least give them a moratorium to allow audiences a few moments to actually miss them.

Michael York dashes onto the cinematic scene as the blundering but very enthusiastic D'Artagnan in Richard Lester's hugely enjoyable period comic romp. The late great Roy Kinnear is the long-suffering vassal of aristocratic swordsmen Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Frank Finlay, whilst Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway shine as heroine and villainess, respectively. Producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind filmed the following year's sequel back-to-back with this more successful first part, which approach they would revisit shortly for Superman and Superman II. Dumas with wit, energy and integrity.
