In honor of Halloween, I once again have a special essay-article up, and this time I can name the contributor. Randall William Cook rates special celebrity status around DVD Savant despite being a friend from way, way back. I hope he's writing a book about his career, because his Hollywood experiences range far afield, from UCLA film school, to acting and directing film and TV, to doing special make-ups, animation direction, front-rank stop motion direction, and second unit direction on big features. Heavily into digital work since the 1990s, Randy supervised character animation and sequence direction for the three Lord of the Rings movies, netting him an amazing three Oscars, three years straight. And he's still the same guy from college -- a new Harryhausen or Welles disc comes out, and he wants to know all about it. Oh, and Cook is a fine writer as well -- as I think this thoughtful piece shows.

This film cannot decide whether to embrace the celeb-London-nightlife excesses our hero writer finds himself in, or lecture us on how shallow it all is
For all its literary pretensions, this tale of a young novelist adrift in London’s celebrity-infested nightlife is a soap bubble of hot air. Ryan Stevenson (Chris Mason) is a Liverpudlian scribe who has relocated to London in order to pen the follow up to his gritty first novel. His loathsome agent is lobbying for something “aspirational not miserable”, with an emphasis on cars, girls and clubbing. Director Marquand tries to have his cake and eat it, with lots of slow-motion shots of sexily gyrating beautiful people, combined with Ryan’s cutting voiceover reminding us how shallow it all is. Any film which uses the camera like a giant tongue with which to drool over the cast has no right to a position of moral superiority.

It's been 18 years since Alan Partridge first mooted the notion of Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank - and as of last week, the project is a dream no longer.
Eubank's team-up with Hostelworld is, of course, a deliberate tip of the hat to Steve Coogan's comic creation - but too often the telly schedules are plagued with examples of #AccidentalPartridge.
Behold, 12 shows that sound like they sprang straight from Alan's fertile mind - this little lot are on a par with Inner City Sumo or Arm Wrestling with Chas 'n' Dave.
1. Flockstars
Celebrity shepherding - Lesley Joseph goes from Birds to sheep and Fazer from N-Dubz lends livestock some street cred.
No-one makes a pun on Amanda Lamb's name, though. Missed opportunity.
2. Gordon Behind Bars
"Cooking in prison" was a format that Alan Partridge actually pitched to Tony Hayers, but it took foul-mouthed foodie Gordon Ramsay to make it a reality.

Well, it's definitely better than Daybreak.
It might not be the highest praise ever heaped on a breakfast TV show, but ITV's big cheeses will probably be breathing a sigh of relief this afternoon that they haven't found themselves another laughable turkey.
Good Morning Britain: Reactions and reviews round-up
Good Morning Britain launch: As it happens - Live Blog
Despite numerous revamps and hosts, Daybreak was doomed from its opening show, which failed to match the hype and was an uncomfortable hybrid of its predecessor GMTV, ITV's fierce rival BBC Breakfast and most oddly of all, The One Show.
Good Morning Britain's launch has, deliberately, been much more low key. The tabloids have been fed some quotes from Susanna Reid and her poaching from the BBC gave the Daily Mail plenty more reasons to ogle at her "pins", but the show hasn't suffered from the same pre-debut hullabaloo...

The actor on playing the legendary South African, palling around with Prince Charles, having a hat spat with Liam Gallagher and the rumour that he'll be the next James Bond
Hi Idris. Are you very drunk? (1)
I'm having a great time. We had a dress rehearsal for this, believe it or not. Let me tell you, they don't water their drinks down like they do in the film industry.
You've got three films coming out this year (2). Which one should I be most excited about?
They're all exciting in different ways. I'm most excited about Mandela. Pacific Rim I saw the other day, which is ... if you like that sort of film, that sort of massive real-life cartoon with really good actors and really good effects, you're gonna love it.
The PR who organised this said that you might win an Oscar for the Mandela film.
I've not heard that.
