Director Mike P. Nelson is no stranger to infusing horror with political bite, having previously helmed 2021’s Wrong Turn and 2018’s The Domestics. For V/H/S/85, Nelson gets ambitious in narrative structure and tone with the segment “No Wake.”
V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.
Joining the V/H/S team was an easy choice for Nelson when it became clear that the intent was to steer clear of the neon ’80s aesthetic.
“I remember speaking with [producer] Josh Goldbloom and Josh saying, ‘Yeah, so we’re doing ’85, and we’re trying not to do the typical kind of clean, neon thing.'” Nelson recalls. “And I was like, ‘Oh, for the love of God, thank you. Okay, good. I got something. I got something. This is going to be a lot of fun.’ That was such a breath of fresh air.”

Hammer Films returns to life with a new owner and a new slate of movies, and up first is the previously announced Doctor Jekyll, which stars Eddie Izzard in the title role.
Doctor Jekyll will release in UK cinemas on October 27, and the official trailer has been debuted by the freshly relaunched Hammer this morning. Watch it down below.
Director Joe Stephenson recently told Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”

Movie lovers know Steven Seagal for his rise to fame through the ’80s and ’90s as a B-movie action star. With hits like Under Siege, Above the Law, and Marked for Death, fans know him well. Unfortunately, Seagal has a history of behavior issues on set. Here’s what one director said about Seagal being a “pain in the neck” to work with.
Director Andrew Davis said Steven Seagal was a ‘pain in the neck’
Director Andrew Davis worked with Steven Seagal for Seagal’s 1988 debut, Above the Law. The director and actor worked together four years later in 1992’s Under Siege. Before Seagal was cast in Above the Law, he worked as a martial arts instructor in Hollywood. Michael Ovitz, an agent who was also Seagal’s student then, thought Seagal would be ideally suited for the leading role.
“I had a meeting with Warner Bros., and they said:...

As Hollywood comes under further scrutiny for their treatment of content creators, so do the streaming platforms whose algorithms and payment practices have left many filmmakers wondering whey their views and rentals just aren’t translating to bigger payments.
Scareplex Owner and filmmaker Ash Hamilton has gone on record stating, “ …this model is, let’s face it, broken. We have many indie filmmakers, especially horror filmmakers, who bring home as little as 8.5 to 12.5 percent of their film’s profits. With the current industry strikes we need to provide filmmakers with a means to make more content, not stifle them.”
Hamilton’s answer? Scareplex (http://www.scareplex.com). A brand new genre themed streaming platform, Scareplex hopes to correct the mistakes that many other platforms continue to make. Hamilton continued, “Our model is to offer the best genre content and to do so in a way that allows the filmmakers to...

SAG-AFTRA issued a statement on Thursday evening to encourage members to promote and audition for approved interim agreement productions, as a means of “strengthening the union’s bargaining position and demonstrating solidarity.”
The guild’s statement provides guidance in regards to the matter of promoting a project with an interim agreement, which has been a matter of contention among some SAG-AFTRA members since the strike began in July. Stars such as Sarah Silverman and Viola Davis have publicly questioned whether SAG-AFTRA members working under those circumstances would be appropriate.
For projects to obtain an interim agreement from the guild, a producer must operate independently from companies belonging to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and agree to terms proposed by SAG-AFTRA in its negotiations with the AMPTP.

New Delhi, Aug 24 (Ians) Even as a recent study showed the evidence linking air pollution to increased risks of dementia, doctors here on Thursday called for strict actions to make the air cleaner.
Dementia is an umbrella term for an impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities.
According to the study, published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine this week, people who lived in areas of higher particle pollution, developed dementia. The study, based on data from a survey of 27,857 people, showed that 15 per cent who developed dementia resided in areas with higher particle pollution.
While previous studies have already linked overall bad air quality to a number of health problems, including the risk of developing dementia, the new study offers a finer-grained look at how specific causes of air pollution seem to be more strongly linked to dementia than others.

Chennai, Aug 23 (Ians) They were all men in the Chandrayaan-3 mission and they were confident of soft landing the country’s moon lander on the lunar soil, a ‘Mission Possible’ after the failure of Chandrayaan-2.
Incidentally, unlike the Chandrayaan-2 mission, where a couple of women were in a lead role — with Project Director M. Vanitha and Mission Director Ritu Karidhal Srivastava — this time around it was an all male club.
In Chandrayaan-3, the Mission Director was Mohan Kumar and the Vehicle/Rocket Director was Biju C. Thomas.

They are associate and deputy project directors and project managers of various systems working at different centres,” a senior official of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) had told Ians preferring anonymity.

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 23 (Ians) A team of researchers at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (Rgcb) here has found that dengue, a recurring tropical disease that witnesses an outbreak in the monsoon, becomes more severe and hostile in animal models when its virus (Denv) while being grown in mosquito-derived cells is exposed to higher environmental temperature.
The research, which can phenomenally help in predicting and mitigating the severity and virulence of dengue, has assumed critical importance as it seeks to establish the impact of global warming on the disease, with an estimated global disease burden of 390 million cases per year (Who).
The study was recently published in The Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology (Faseb) journal of America.
Dr Easwaran Sreekumar, who led the research team, said: “The body temperature of mosquitoes is not constant as in higher animals and it increases or decreases with the environmental temperature… So far...

As Elon Musk continues to ring in sweeping changes at X, the exodus from the platform formerly known as Twitter is reshaping the social web. Decentralized platform Bluesky experienced a sudden surge of registrations after Musk announced that X’s blocking feature will be relegated to direct messages.
Currently, X users can use the block to prevent specific accounts from following them, viewing their tweets, or contacting them directly. In a recent spate of posts, Musk said that blocking users “makes no sense.” He plans to restrict the block to DMs moving forward.
It’s not the first time Musk has shared his thoughts about blocking users. Though he is adamant that the anti-harassment feature will be limited on X, he could expand the related “mute” option. Muted users cannot see posts from the person who muted them. A key difference between the two forms of moderation is that muted...

Lucknow, Aug 13 (Ians) The Csir-Central Drug Research Institute (Cdri) in Lucknow has introduced an innovative contraceptive named ‘Levormeloxifene’.
The breakthrough contraceptive is notably more effective to the human body with its reduced dose and chemical burden compared to existing market options.
Levormeloxifene is a modernised version of the 1990s ‘Saheli’ pill, initially developed by Cdri. Once a staple during the 1990s, Saheli, also known as ‘Chaya’ under the National Family Planning programme, has now evolved into Levormeloxifene.
Radha Rangarajan, Director of Csir-cdri, explained, “The core objective behind this contraceptive’s development was to minimise the chemical content, particularly crucial for women in their reproductive phase who predominantly consume such tablets.”
Rangarajan elaborated, “The compound ormeloxifene within Saheli comprises two enantiomers, dextro-ormeloxifene, and levo-ormeloxifene (levormeloxifene). Extensive preclinical studies have indicated higher efficacy of the levo counterpart, levormeloxifene. This research solely focuses on testing the levo model as a contraceptive, thereby reducing...

New Delhi/Noida, Aug 12 (Ians) India has witnessed a remarkable 27 per cent growth in organ transplant numbers, however more needs to be done as there is a critical demand for organ replacement in the country, with around 50,000 individuals awaiting transplants, experts said on Saturday.
The country recorded around 15,000 organ transplants in 2022, underscoring the importance of boosting organ donations to save more lives, according to data from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (Notto).
Despite the progress, India’s organ donation rate stands at approximately 0.52/million populations, emphasising the need for further efforts to bridge the gap between demand and supply.
“Increasing organ donation rates remains vital to meet the demand and enhance patients’ quality of life. With successful 350 liver transplants and 890 kidney transplants, Jaypee Hospital continues to make a significant impact in saving lives,” said Dr Manoj Luthra, CEO and Director, Jaypee Hospital.

After representatives for the Writers Guild of America convened on Friday with major studios and streamers in the first formal return to the negotiating table since the strike was called on May 2, the WGA negotiating committee says the union will “evaluate their offer and, after deliberation, go back to them with the WGA’s response next week.”
The negotiations were led by Amtptp president Carol Lombardini and WGA West assistant executive director and chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman. The meeting was announced on Thursday after Lombardini reached out to the guild to resume negotiations, with an expectation that studios would provide responses to the WGA’s latest offer that was presented Aug. 4.

Washington, Aug 11 (Ians) Crypto asset trading platform Bittrex and its co-founder and former CEO, William Shihara, have agreed to settle charges with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for $24 million over charges that they operated as an unregistered exchange, broker and clearing agency.
Bittrex’s foreign affiliate, Bittrex Global GmbH, also agreed to settle charges that it failed to register as a national securities exchange.
“For years, Bittrex worked with token issuers to ‘scrub’ their online statements of any indicia that they were investment contracts — all in an effort to evade the federal securities laws. They failed,” said Gurbir S. Grewal, Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement.
The settlement makes clear that “you cannot escape liability by simply changing labels or altering descriptions because what matters is the economic realities of those offerings”, Grewal added.

Rob Lowe literally did not like working on the Emmy Award-winning series The West Wing. But it wasn’t all the walking and talking that did him in; rather, it was the constant struggle of feeling “undervalued” as White House Communications Director and later Deputy Chief of Staff Sam Seaborn.
