The maestros of suspense genre filmmakers Ram Madhvani, Homi Adajania and Sandeep Modi have revealed what makes the thriller genre tick, and decoded their secrets of thrillers.
The year 2023 has been the year of suspense, mystery and emotion-packed stories, with adrenaline-pumping shows like ‘The Night Manager 1 and 2’, ‘Aarya’ and ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’.
The mastermind behind ‘Aarya’ — Ram Madhvani — provided insights into decoding the thriller genre, saying: “I don’t think I’m making a thriller, I don’t think I’m making a crime show. I’m making a show about a family. I’m making a show about a character who’s put into difficult situations. The backdrop of it may be or whatever that she’s going through. It could have been any other backdrop. It could have been an industrial kind of backdrop. So I think that is just the backdrop.”

Renowned Indian actor Dimple Kapadia (“Tenet”) is enjoying a blockbuster 2022-23 with everything she touches turning to gold.
Kapadia had a pivotal role in Disney’s 2022 mythological superhero film “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva.” In 2023, the actor had meaty roles in two of the year’s biggest Bollywood hits, “Pathaan” and “Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.” And, taking a leaf from the Helen Mirren playbook, Kapadia took an action-heavy headline role in streamer Disney+ Hotstar’s patriarchy shattering drama series “Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo,” which released in May.
The series revolves around four women, the matriarch Savitri (Kapadia), her daughters-in-law and her daughter, who live in a forgotten village in the northwest of India. Savitri runs the Rani Cooperative, trading in products ranging from balms to textiles. But everything here isn’t what it seems – the cottage business is a front for the biggest drug cartel in South Asia.

Isha says, “Madhuri Yadav as we already saw in season 2 had almost snatched power towards the end from Kaleen Bhaiya essayed the wonderful Pankaj Tripathi for reasons best known to her. When you take on such an important character in the show, please accept nothing but great drama intertwined riding on big Eq!

Her latest release ‘Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo’ has redefined the relationship between the women of the family, where often it is shown that "aurat hi aurat ki dushman hoti hai".
Asked how she feels the show and the relationship of the women in the show has changed the perspective, Dimple told Ians: "I haven’t broken the barrier. It was the character that’s broken the barrier. And that’s important. At the end of the day, it’s the written material, it’s the role, it’s the character, that really works and people often mistake by saying – Oh, what a great performance."
"You can’t do a decent performance if you’re not given the meat. If the character is not good enough, if the lines are not good enough – it’s an effort by the entire team."

Isha Talwar has been getting a lot of rave reviews for her Rajasthani look in her latest show, Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo. The actress revealed that her prime reference for getting the look right was the 1993 classic movie Rudaali. which had Dimple Kapadia in the lead. Not only was the look in the show her reference but also motivated to recreate the exact look of Dimple Kapadia for a shoot she did. For Isha, it was an honour to be adapting Dimple’s look while she shared the screen space with the veteran actress herself.
Isha says, “The story is based in Rajasthan and so my character, Badi Bahu, has a particular kind of dressing. To get the look right, my prime source of reference is Dimple ma’am’s look in Rudaali. Post the show, I wanted to recreate the exact look that Dimple Ma’am had in the show.

Talking about the most intense scene he shot with Dimple Kapadia, Adajania said: “I think the most intense scene was when Dimple’s character Savitri walks through her atrium to her room after she leaves the celebration when she came back from attacking the Monk and she realises that her master plan has not worked out.”
“There is something way more devious, which is beyond her at this point in the narrative and she goes through all the tragic milestones that has were extremely sort of prominent for making her the character she is today.”

The actress heaped praise on Homi, calling him an intuitive director.
She said: “There is something very nice about working with Homi, he is definitely more intuitive than most directors I’ve had an opportunity to work with. Mumbai, May 2 (Ians) Veteran star Dimple Kapadia is happy to see the female roles evolving as today’s female characters have their own flaws.
Dimple said: “Firstly, it’s high time that we stop calling films and series – male centric or female centric. These are stories in itself, irrespective of the gender of the lead cast, they are stories beyond gender, region and cultures that need to be spoken about and celebrated.”
She added: “However, I am thrilled that stories with dynamic female relationships are evolving and we are seeing women in new characters in every form. Actors may struggle to embody their characters and detach from them, especially when the role is similar or dissimilar to their personality. Actress Radhika Madan shares her experience of playing Shanta in show ‘Saas Bahu aur Flamingo’ and how the character was different, yet similar to her in real life.
Talking about this, she added, “My character Shanta and I are poles apart in our approach, but I think the only similarity we have is we are both passionate and eager, however, apart from that, we are really very different. Shanta is much more calm, composed, self-assured, confident and calculative when it comes to her words, and being an actor, I do crave for the uncertainty, which drives me to challenge myself at every step and explore the uncharted territories, pushing the envelope further and further.

When tragedy strikes and the world turns its back on her, Savitri doesn’t curl up and die, but rises from the ashes and creates her own destiny. This is what I love about her character. She owns her alternate sense of morality.
