Eddie Murphy returns with his big, goofy smile in the new trailer for the family Christmas comedy Candy Cane Lane from Prime Video. Murphy is reunited with director Reginald Hudlin, who directed him in the 1992 comedy Boomerang. While Boomerang was a very adult-oriented film, this new film jumps over to the other side of the spectrum with a family-friendly tone. While earlier images and trailers showcased more of a Christmas decoration-type comedy, the new footage reveals an adventure aspect as Jillian Bell, who plays the magical elf, Pepper, shows to be more trouble than previously thought.

Christmas is both a joyous and stressful time. Regardless of which one rings true for you, who doesn’t wish for each year’s holiday to be the best ever? Eddie Murphy has spent much of the last 27 years making kid-friendly flicks like “Imagine That” and “Daddy Daycare.” As such, it’s a little surprising that “Candy Cane Lane” represents his first Christmas/holiday flick. That’s the hook for this latest Amazon Prime original feature.
This brief teaser doesn’t so much explain the premise as lays out the protagonist, showing Murphy as a loving husband and father who nonetheless takes the concept of Christmas decorations a bit too far. He essentially sells his soul to a magical elf played by Jillian Bell for a holiday-related wish. Alas, much to his family’s chagrin, that wish is not world peace or a new album from Drake.
Murphy’s wish causes a spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, unleashing PG-rated chaos on the town. One can surmise that all parties learn that Christmas is not about winning...

Eddie Murphy made a big comeback with his acclaimed performance in Dolemite Is My Name from Netflix. He followed it up with Coming 2 America, which reunited him with his Dolemite director, Craig Brewer. Murphy would appear in Netflix’s You People, and he’s got a new sequel to one of his most beloved films on the way with the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. While it may seem like he’s attempting to recapture his edge, it looks as if Eddie hasn’t exactly put the family films behind him. Warning: This notebook contains spoilers for the second season of Peacock’s Killing It.
The driving idea behind Peacock’s Killing It might be most tidily encapsulated in an argument between its two leads in the season two finale. Having screwed an associate out of his share of their saw palmetto berry farm, Craig (Craig Robinson) defends the tactic as “very basic dog-eat-dog stuff.” His best friend and co-owner, however, rejects the cliché. “But like, dogs shouldn’t eat dogs, right?” Jillian (Claudia O’Doherty) demands. “No. When a dog eats another dog, people freak out.”
By Killing It’s estimation, they’re both right. Dan Goor and Luke Tredici are scathing in their criticism of the modern American rat race, which, to Craig’s point, does tend to reward those most willing to manipulate, cheat and harm others. But its heart ultimately lies with Jillian. This situation is worth freaking out about.

In these dark times in which we live, the line between satire and horror can be so razor-thin as to barely exist at all. Peacock’s Craig Robinson comedy Killing It is ostensibly a comedy about how badly the American economic system is stacked against anyone who isn’t already well-off. But its humor is so cutting, and so often feels not that far removed from reality, that I often spend more time covering my face during episodes than laughing.

We all have shortcomings but in Shortcomings, all the characters have them in abundance. This funny, smart, modern comedy follows the lives and misadventures of Ben Tanaka, his best friend Alice Kim (comedian Sherry Cola) and his girlfriend Miko Hayashi (actress/fashion maven Ally Maki) as the San Francisco Bay area twenty-somethings navigate relationships and just real life. Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine, Shortcomings is filled with laugh-out-loud humor and sharp, witty dialog in a real-life tale that also shows the variety of Asian American experience.

We all have that one friend. Or relative, or coworker, or ex. Some people, no matter how much you love them, can be exhausting — their own stubborn immaturity hindering the way they live life and build relationships.
In Randall Park’s “Shortcomings,” Justin H. Min plays Ben, a character with a laundry list of exactly what the film’s name invokes and exactly zero awareness of about it. He’s apathetic and irascible with his long-term girlfriend Miko (Ally Maki), self-absorbed with best friend Alice (Sherry Cola), and utterly complacent in his job as manager of a local movie theater, which is hanging on by a thread.

Randall Park’s Shortcomings opens with a fake-out: A Chinese-American woman in an evening gown gets insulted by a casually racist white hotel clerk. She turns on her heels, walks over to her dapper-looking husband, exchanges a few words, and walks back to the front desk. They’ve just bought the hotel, so the clerk can leave his post and go take out the trash, thank you very much. Then the couple kisses, fireworks go off, and the credits roll.

Sean Penn has protested wars in Iraq, walked with democracy demonstrators in Cairo and spearheaded natural relief efforts. But today in Burbank on the 19th day of the SAG-AFTRA strike and 92nd day of the WGA work stoppage, the two-time Oscar winner braved the muggy 87-degree weather in support of his fellow writers and actors.
If you glance on social media, you might notice that some stars are off on faraway vacations during this tumultuous time as the guilds are at odds with the AMPTP. But not Penn, who circled Disney Studios several times today with his Into the Wild star Emile Hirsch. They were joined by Oscar winner Octavia Spencer, Yellowjackets’ Melanie Lynskey, Veep‘s Timothy Simons, 30 Rock‘s Jack McBrayer, two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda and Mrs. Davis co-creator Damon Lindelof.

The scene outside Netflix on Thursday was an energetic one, as SAG-AFTRA and WGA members together on the (very hot) picket lines while Hollywood’s double strike wears on. TheWrap’s creative director Jeff Vespa was on hand to photograph the likes of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Aubrey Plaza, Sarah Silverman, Edgar Wright, Kendrick Sampson, Timothy Simons, Brett Gelman, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer and more at the site of one of the most contentious studios. Netflix has drawn the ire of many striking actors and writers for not paying residuals on shows and films it doesn’t own.

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.
“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.
It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.
Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. What is it capable of? They’re philosophical questions,” he said.
Duchovny also highlighted streaming residuals. “We always worked in a business that rewarded success and didn’t want failure.

“Joy Ride,” the raunchy girl’s trip comedy starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu opens this week.
It’s the first studio movie to feature a predominantly Asian cast since Marvel’s “Shang-Chi: The Legend of the 10 Rings” in 2021, and the first since “Crazy Rich Asians” in 2018 to feature Asian female leads.
In the film, lawyer Audrey Sullivan (Park) is tasked with securing a business deal in China. She brings along her childhood friend Lolo (Cola) as her translator, as Audrey was adopted by white parents. They’re joined by Deadeye (Wu), Lolo cousin. While in China, they meet up with Audrey’s college roommate Kat, a successful actress. Lolo encourages Ashley to search for her birth mother, and hijinks — with an emphasis on “high” — ensue.

The tone of Crazy Rich Asians co-screenwriter Adele Lim’s directorial debut, Joy Ride, is more accurately conveyed by its working title, The Joy Fuck Club. The film falls squarely in the recent tradition of “women behaving badly” comedies like Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids and Malcolm D. Lee’s Girls Trip, with a handful of gut-busting, outrageous comic set pieces that push the boundaries of good taste. But alongside all the coke-fueled, outlandish sexual escapades and vagina tattoo jokes that allow Joy Ride’s four leads to smash the stereotype of the quiet, submissive Asian woman, we also get a heartfelt, if sometimes clunky, tale of cultural heritage and belonging that heads in surprising, and surprisingly complicated, directions.

"While the cat's away, the mouse will play." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the official trailer for an excellent indie comedy called Shortcomings, which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. I saw this at the fest and really enjoyed it, it's a fresh and surprisingly honest romantic comedy about the experiences of Asian Americans - told from an entirely different perspective. The story follows a trio of young Bay Area urbanites – Ben Tanaka, Miko Hayashi, and Alice Kim – as they navigate a range of interpersonal relationships, traversing the country seeking the ideal connection. Shortcomings is directed by comedian / actor Randall Park, making his feature directorial debut. It's based on the graphic novel of the same name by Adrian Tomine. The film stars Justin H. Betty Gore died on June 13, 1980. Her church friend Candy Montgomery swung the axe that killed her. Those facts form the basis for two TV shows released in the past 12 months: HBO Max’s “Love & Death” starring Elizabeth Olsen and Hulu’s “Candy” with Jessica Biel. Both are set in Wylie, Texas before and after the attack; both try to understand the events that shook the town.
Yet very early on, “Love & Death” locks in the difference in their ambitions with a disclaimer: “This is a true story.” The five words at the top of every episode might be a subtle jab at other interpretations; it could be a device designed to keep HBO Max subscribers’ attention. It’s definitely a declaration of intent. Where “Candy” addresses the levels of rationalization of which people are capable, “Love & Death” ticks more boxes on the “true story” checklist.

Randall Park’s directorial debut, which had a mostly positive reception from its Sundance premiere, will launch theatrically on August 4.
“Shortcomings,” starring Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola and Ally Maki, will make its New York premiere at the Tribeca Festival next month in the Spotlight Narrative section.
Based on the Eisner-winning cartoonist Adrian Tomine’s graphic novel of the same name, “Shortcomings” also features Tavi Gevinson, Debby Ryan, Sonoya Mizuno, Timothy Simons and Jacob Batalon. Tomine, a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, adapted the screenplay and is executive producing.
The picture concerns a struggling filmmaker who spends his days managing an arthouse theater. When his girlfriend moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left to ponder what he really wants out of life.
