Before she decided to run for U.S. Senate in the age of Trump, Martha McSally was one of the more formidable up-and-comers in Congress. The Republican from Arizona overcame sexual abuse as a teenager to become a barrier-breaking Air Force fighter pilot and role model for young women, then a vote-getting wizard in a blue-leaning House district that Hillary Clinton won by 5 points in 2016 (McSally took it by 14). Her popularity was boosted by her signature moment in the national spotlight two years ago this month, when Donald Trump’s “grab...

Howard Dean, Vermont’s former Democratic governor, proved a match for Sacha Baron Cohen last night on Showtime’s Who Is America?, refusing to take the bait when Cohen’s alter-ego, the alt-right Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., insisted that Hillary Clinton is a man.
And though Dean dismissed the conspiracy theory – fueled by obviously doctored photo of a pants-bulging Hillary – he did engage slightly during the ridiculous conversation. Not to mention that he sat down with the fake in the first place.
When Cohen/Ruddick produced the photo, Dean first attempted to explain it as a bad press from the drycleaner. Another doctored photo, of Clinton standing at a urinal, prompted Dean to note explain that any photo can be doctored, even one to make Donald Trump appear in drag.
“I can’t go here,” Dean says at one point. “I can’t do it.”

Arizona death row inmate Joseph Wood, who had been sentenced to die for a 1989 double homicide, was executed Wednesday via a lethal injection that took nearly two hours to kill him.
Botched Execution In Arizona
Wood’s botched execution is merely the latest that has resulted from new methods of administering the lethal injection. After receiving the drug cocktail, Wood snorted and struggled to breathe until he finally expired, according to attorney Dale Baich.
"It took Joseph Wood two hours to die, and he gasped and struggled to breathe for about an hour and 40 minutes,” Baich said in a statement, according to CNN. “We will renew our efforts to get information about the manufacturer of drugs as well as how Arizona came up with the experimental formula of drugs it used today.”
Baich added, "Arizona appears to have joined several other states who have been responsible for an entirely preventable horror -- a bungled execution.

State Senator Steve Gallardo of Arizona came out as gay after being inspired by the recent conflict over Sb 1062, the Arizona bill that would have allowed discrimination against the Lgbt community.
“I’m gay, I’m a Latino, and I’m a senator. And it’s okay,” Gallardo told reporters on Wednesday.
Gallardo has been out to his friends and family for over a decade, and says that he was encouraged to come out to the public after seeing all the support for the Lgbt community in the fight to get Sb 1062 vetoed. He himself has been incredibly vocal in his opposition to the bill.
“Seeing the people out there, protesting. I thought, it’s time. It’s time to let people know me. And to send people a message. I’m more interested in letting people who struggle with this know that it’s okay,” Gallardo said following his announcement.

Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert took a look at some recent comments by Rep. Steve King (R-ia) about the Arizona bill that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays and lesbians on the basis of religious freedom, until Republican Governor Jan Brewer decided to veto it. Since King's main objection to protecting the rights of homosexuality is that their "self-professed behavior" cannot be “independently verified,” Colbert decided King might as well be the one verify it.

Same-sex marriage is a hot topic in America this week following gay-rights wins in Arizona, Texas, and Kentucky. Over the past few years, the Us has seen a growing number of states where same-sex marriage is legal, and recent political moves signal more strides. On Wednesday, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the controversial anti-lgbt bill that would've allowed businesses to refuse service to gays or others based on religious beliefs. She addressed all the buzz over the bill, saying, "I call them as I see them, despite the cheers or the boos from the crowd," adding, "I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine, and no one would ever want." Meanwhile, a federal judge struck down the gay-marriage ban in Texas, marking a major political move in the conservative state.

An elite crew of firefighters trained to battle the nation's fiercest wildfires was overtaken by an out-of-control blaze in Arizona, killing 19 members as they tried to protect themselves from the flames under fire-resistant shields. It was the most firefighters killed battling a wildfire in the U.S. in decades. The lightning-sparked fire, which spread to at least 2,000 acres amid triple-digit temperatures, also destroyed 200 homes and sent hundreds fleeing from Yarnell, a town of about 700 residents about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. Residents huddled in shelters and bars, watching their homes burn on TV as flames lit up the night sky in the forest above the town.

Want to hang out with Julia Roberts, Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele? Why not head out to Fire Island, where they’re filming scenes from The Normal Heart. Maybe you can get carded for a beer like Lea Michele.
The comprehensive immigration reform bill has passed the Senate 68-32, but faces dim chances in the House, where Republicans seem determined to lose the next several presidential elections because they’re afraid of people who aren’t old and white. I’m sure Senator Leahy breathed a sigh of...

Republican Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and President Obama have had their well-publicized ups and downs, but in a rare moment of levity at the grim Republican National Convention, the strident administration critic appeared to endorse the incumbent. Governor Brewer told NBC News' Ron Mott that "I know if President Obama is elected in November, which I hope he is, he will be able to come together with all of us and come up with a solution. I believe he will secure our borders. And therefore, we can resolve all of the other issues as a simple matter."...

Soledad O'Brien invited outspoken Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio to Starting Point Friday morning, speaking with him about Arizona governor Jan Brewer's decision to respond to the President's "deferred action" take on immigration by issuing a directive of her own, denying IDs and state benefits to young undocumented immigrants. O'Brien asked Arpaio if he intended to follow the state or the feds.

Bryan Fuller was a little coy at Comic-Con on the subject, but it sure sounds like he's trying to get Pushing Daisies to Broadway, with the original cast. Who would stand in line for days to get tickets?
I'll be the first to admit that 50 Cent has said some anti-gay things that really ticked me off. But as for his opinion on Frank Ocean? “Obama is for same-sex marriage. If the president is saying that, then who am I to go the other way? Anyone that has an issue with Frank Ocean is an idiot.”
My buddy Brett Berk has compiled a list of the Five Best and Five Worst Batmobiles, and I have to admit I've never seen some of these cars, especially the older ones. Where did they hide the weaponry in the convertibles?
I've kind of avoided talking about Usher's stepson Kile Glover, who was seriously injured in a boating accident.

Congratulations to my favorite cantankerous old coot Congressman, Barney Frank, who wed Jim Ready over the weekend in Newton, Ma. They promised to love each other "on MSNBC or on Fox" and "in Congress or retirement." Frank became the first out Congressman years ago, and now has become the first to have a same-sex marriage. Hopefully, no one bought them a dining room table.
Meanwhile, the cruelest governor in the United States, Jan Brewer of Arizona, has asked the Supreme Court to take up the case of an Arizona law stripping domestic partners health care benefits.
Ron Perlman has always said he hates the process of becoming Hellboy because of the time in the makeup chair, but he did it again last week when the Make A Wish Foundation called with a sick young boy who wanted to meet Hellboy. Not only did he get to meet his hero, the...

Well, that devolved quickly.
As one of the only critics who enjoyed The Newsroom premiere - focusing on the captivating pace and writing of Aaron Sorkin over the repetitive, sanctimonious message behind it - I was looking forward to "News Night 2.0."
But why must I now join the chorus of those coming down hard on the new HBO drama? For a number of reasons...
MacKenzie McCrazyPants. So MacKenzie has been on the front lines of Afghanistan for years, she has covered more real news in one day than Will has in a lifetime (by his own admission)... yet she can't figure out how to send an email? She can't give a presentation without falling all over herself? She can't talk to another female without desperately crying out for a friend?
It's plausible for one to be neurotic and competent, but MacKenzie veered far too close to just the former this week.

Season 1, Episode 2: "News Night 2.0"
We're only at the second episode and it seems everyone already has an opinion on "The Newsroom," and the fully transparent politics that Aaron Sorkin has on display, for better or worse, realistic or not. Yes, that has made the show uneven, but regardless, it's still an engaging (if at times exhausting) hour of television. But in this week's episode, let's credit Sorkin for doing something right: clearing up the source of Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels) and Mackenzie MacHale's (Emily Mortimer) divorce. In most other shows, this is the kind of thing that would've been talked around for a season, leading up to some kind of dramatic, climactic showdown. But here, it's a comedic moment and emotional release, all at once.
The setup for the reveal is almost painfully obvious -- the show opens with Will taking Mackenzie aside and making it crystal clear that...

Washington -- Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) pulled out a secret weapon on Wednesday to talk about the Arizona immigration law and potential for racial profiling: Justin Bieber.
In a speech about the law, Sb 1070, the pro-immigration reform congressman showed pictures of Bieber, who is Canadian, along with other celebrities, journalists, athletes and Supreme Court justices who are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves and asked who looks more like an immigrant.
"For our young C-span [viewers]: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez," he said on the House floor. "These young people have overcome their very different national origins and became apparently a happy couple. I’m sure Justin helped Gomez learn all about American customs and feel more at home in her adopted country."
"Oh wait a minute, I’m sorry," he continued. "Because I’m not a trained Arizona official, I somehow got that backwards. Actually, Ms. Gomez, of Texas,...

"It's late June," begins John Rocker's first column for World Net Daily, and it is late June, so he's good so far,
and the dog days have been beating down for the past several weeks as the season is already lethargically dragging. The only thing that seems to be languishing at a more apathetic pace is the current game that's ongoing. It’s the 17th inning and the score has been tied at 5 for what seems like nine hours. The last base hit occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m., which was four innings ago. There hasn't been a base runner in over an hour. This game has turned into nothing more than a giant effort in futility. If I had known today was going to turn out like this, I would have stayed back at the hotel.*
I'm pretty sure nobody ever asked Rocker to leave the hotel in the first place.

Following the Supreme Court decision about Arizona's immigration law, Greta Van Susteren spoke with Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, who wasn't sky in holding back her feelings about the decision. Brewer — who you may recall had a brief, finger-wagging encounter with President Obama — criticized the current administration for not abiding by the rule of law, and not letting her protect her state's citizens.

Arizona’s Republican Gov. Jan Brewer was hammered on Monday during a press conference where she defended Arizona’s controversial immigration enforcement law, Senate Bill 1070, after most of the law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. Brewer was hammered by a skeptical press corps that repeatedly asked how the court decision that overturned most of the law could somehow be a victory for Arizona and her administration.
