Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group has named CFO Stephane Lefebvre to replace Daniel Lamarre as CEO.
From Dec. 1, Lamarre will step down from the top post after leading the famous global circus troupe for 21 years, based in Montreal. Cirque du Soleil is tumbling into Hollywood, teaming up with producer Dan Lin’s production company Rideback to develop feature films based on the French Canadian theatrical company’s catalog of shows, the two companies announced jointly Tuesday.
No specific projects were mentioned, but Cirque du Soleil is behind dozens of acrobatic touring performances and shows, including “The Beatles Love,” “Michael Jackson’s One,” “Zumanity,” “O” and many more. They acquired the Blue Man Group in 2017, and have also developed a show around the high-flying stunts of “Avatar.”
The company’s most recent show is “R.U.N.,” which opens in Las Vegas this fall and explores the world of movie stunts as it imagines a live-action thriller.

Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group is partnering with Rideback, producer of “Aladdin,” “It” and the Lego franchise, to develop movies inspired by the Cirque du Soleil catalogue.
The partnership, announced Tuesday, aims to leverage Rideback’s track record and increase the opportunities for a global audience to enjoy the Cirque du Soleil universe.
“Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group is synonymous with high quality entertainment, regardless of the brand or product category,” said Daniel Lamarre, president and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. “For us, the movie business is a logical progression for ongoing portfolio expansion, and Rideback is the perfect partner to embark on this journey.”

The movie projects will be spearheaded by Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group president and CEO Daniel Lamarre and Lin along with Sebastien Ouimet, who manages content and distribution partnerships for Cdseg, and Rideback film president Jonathan Eirich. For the first time in its 34-year history, Cirque du Soleil has made a significant investment in the family market for live entertainment, acquiring Minneapolis-based VStar Entertainment Group.
Through licenses with companies including Nickelodeon and Spin Master, VStar produces shows such as a stage version of long-running animated hit Paw Patrol. The deal also includes VStar’s Florida subsidiary Cirque Dreams, which specializes in spectacles customized for tourist venues, with partnerships in place with Norwegian Cruise Line and Gaylord Hotels, among others.
Terms were not disclosed. Cirque du Soleil is privately held.
