The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy had its opening day stage greeting on Jan 19, 2024, at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.

Along with Keishi Otomo and Takashi Miike, Shinsuke Sato completed the trio of Japanese directors who truly excel in action anime/manga adaptations, with his works in “Gantz”, “Library Wars”, “I am a Hero” etc speaking for themselves. “Kingdom 2: Far and Away”, which continues the adaptation of the homonymous manga by Yasuhisa Hara, highlights the fact in the most eloquent fashion as it currently streams on Netflix, just before the third part's release later this year.

A lot of time in “Alice in Borderland” is spent talking about different worlds. There’s the one that its characters find themselves in and the one that they want to return to. The first is a largely-abandoned Tokyo, with only a fraction of its citizens left to roam the streets after being mysteriously transported there. One afternoon, Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and some friends duck into a bathroom to hide and emerge to find their city almost entirely empty.
In this Netflix show based on Haro Aso’s manga, Arisu is just one of a roughly undefined group of people looking to stay alive in their new alternate reality, where each person staves off death by playing wickedly manipulative games designed to pit players against each other and themselves. Each game corresponds to specific playing card in a deck. The higher the stakes, the longer the reward for making it through to the end.

If you like anime, bizarre dystopias, or game shows involving death, then I have some great news for you! "Alice in Borderland" season 2 is coming to Netflix on December 22, 2022, and the streamer just released the trailer. The Japanese series follows a bored young man named Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and a woman he teams up with named Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) as they battle their way through a series of violent games in a dystopian futuristic version of Tokyo. The series never lacks in gore or a body count; Hoai-Tran Bui described the first season as if "'Battle Royale' and 'Saw' had a sick, twisted baby." If you thought "Squid Game" was gnarly, then just wait until you put your peepers on "Alice in Borderland."

The twisted competition at the center of "Alice in Borderland" is back, and it looks like the games aren't done just yet. A "super teaser trailer" for season 2 of the popular show, which is based on the manga series of the same name by Haro Aso, was revealed during Netflix's Tudum fan event, and it looks like we're in for another wild ride.
The teaser shows the return of protagonists Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) and Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) after that massive cliffhanger at the end of the last season. After completing a number of increasingly deadly challenges, they learned to their dismay that there are even more coming as the games enter a second phase. We also get our first look at some of the other contestants roped into the games, as well as shots of the sadistic gamemaster Mira (Riisa Naka), who looks to be a more menacing presence this season.

Where to Watch “Alice in Borderland”: Netflix
Showing a completely deserted city center is an eerie trick. When it happens near the beginning of the Netflix series “Alice in Borderland,” it happens in broad daylight, with a bustling Tokyo empty and echoing. Even setting aside the real-world analogues of the not-too-distant past, there’s something about the way the series lets three characters bathe in that silence as they run across deserted highway lanes in search of anyone else who might still be left.
Before that trio gets a chance to really parse out why they’re seemingly alone in this alternate population-sparse reality, things take an even bigger turn: Entering a mysterious building locks them into a survival game with simple rules and a complex path to getting out alive.
This “win or be killed” premise is a major part of what...

When I was a kid I thought all martial arts movies were fight after fight after fight. We didn’t get many martial arts movies on TV in those days but there were plenty of shows like The Incredibly Strange Film Show, which featured clips from some of the wildest kung-fu flicks out there. It wasn’t until a few years later and I had started renting VHS tapes from my local video shop that I found out that Was true! Ok, Ok, so I now know it’s not true – many martial arts films have real plots, tell real stories, with character arcs and everything… but, you see, it seems I’d spent my youth renting a myriad of Godfrey Ho’s stitched-together ninja movies and multiple badly-edited, badly-dubbed movies on tape...

If 2020 has brought us anything positive, it’s the fact that Netflix has dropped some seriously cool new shows. However, the streaming service has been doing its best to make sure the world is entertained in the midst of what is – for some people – a questionable life. So many people across the world are unable to live their normal lives, while others are able to go about their everyday life as nothing has changed depending on where you live. Netflix has been working hard to ensure we

If you're unfamiliar with the term otaku, the closest cognate in English is probably geek or nerd, but there's also an overlap with the broader term fan, and there are no particular gender expectations attached to it. Basically, otaku are people who base significant parts of their lives around their favourite entertainers or forms of entertainment, and, usually, spend significant parts of their money on related merchandise or events. Despite the popularity of Japanese entertainment exports elsewhere in the world, however, otaku and not greatly respected on home turf. Having such inclinations is something they might opt to keep secret at work or in their romantic lives.
Is it different when an otaku dates another otaku? That's one of the central questions addressed by Yûichi Fukuda's quirky romcom. It centres on Narumi (Mitsuki Takahata) and Hirotaka (Kento Yamazaki), two childhood friends who are surprised to find themselves working in the same.

Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010 films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century.Jim Emerson once wrote that Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom tells you how to watch it in its first shot. By a similar token, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - Chapter 1 (2017) tells you how to watch it with its very title. Making sense of its three parts requires either familiarity with the manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (or its anime adaptation) or a willingness to do some work as a spectator. Diamond Is Unbreakable is the name of the fourth story arc of the JoJo manga; it was originally serialized from 1992 to 1995. It speaks to Miike’s love of—and entrenchment in—cartoon media that he’d choose not to adapt the first story of this long-running...

Isao Yukisada’s new romantic drama “Theater” will drop worldwide on Amazon Prime Video and open theatrically in Japan on July 17. This sort of day-and-date double release is a rarity in Japan and a first for Amazon Prime Video in the country.
Based on the second book by Naoki Matayoshi, a comedian whose first novel “Hibana” was adapted as a Netflix series, the film stars Kento Yamazaki as an aspiring young playwright and director in the theater world and Mayu Matsuoka as a fashion student who loves him. With its original opening postponed due to the coronavirus, the film is now being released directly by its production company, Yoshimoto Kogyo, after initial distributors Shochiku and Aniplex passed the baton.
In a statement Yukisada explained that the film would open on 20 screens on Japan’s ‘mini theater’ or arthouse circuit. “A simultaneous theatrical release and streaming fulfils my hopes,” Yukisada said.

A dose of 21st century attitude mixes nicely with other winning ingredients in “Kingdom,” a thoroughly entertaining adaptation of Yasuhisa Hara’s hugely popular manga set in China, 245 B.C. Centered on two orphan boys who dream of becoming “the greatest generals on Earth,” this Japanese take on a Chinese wuxia is overwrought at times and too simply plotted at others, but wins through with colorful characters, top-class swordplay and snappy dialogue that’ll especially connect with younger viewers. Energetically directed and co-written by manga-to-screen specialist Shinsuke Sato, “Kingdom” grossed a whopping $50 million in local cinemas earlier this year and ought to perform strongly in limited North American release from August 16.
Taking its thematic cues from literary classics including “The Prince and the Pauper,” and adopting the high-spirited story-telling of action-adventures such as Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress,” “Kingdom” refreshes a familiar tale of heroes emerging from poverty to...

After being almost caught by the police in the apartment of a family he held hostage, serial-killer Anjuro Katagiri (Takayuki Yamada) is bow-arrowed in the throat by a young fellow who looks like he sprang out of a Duran Duran video. Pulling out the arrow from Katagiri’s flesh, the youth says something about the gravity bringing them together, about love and comradeship, before informing him he has been chosen. The killer is not only alive, but also rewarded with the ability to turn into a water demon after his blood has drenched the nearby pond. The angelic face with a strawberry blond mullet who made this possible is the actual supervillain of the story, a high-school student Keicho Nijimura (Masaki Okada), one of the superpower-bearers, who is choosing the army of foes for reasons revealed only in the film’s final five minutes.

"Someday, I'll be the most powerful Shogun there ever was!" Funimation Films has debuted an official Us trailer for a Japanese live-action manga adaptation titled Kingdom, based on the series by Yasuhisa Hara. This is an epic Japanese action film that is actually set in ancient China - hopefully that's not too confusing. Orphaned by war, a young slave boy and his friend dream of changing their fate and becoming the world's greatest generals of the Qin Kingdom. Starring Kento Yamazaki, Ryo Yoshizawa, Masami Nagasawa, Kanna Hashimoto, Kanata Hongō, Shinnosuke Mitsushima, and Takao Osawa. This is directed by veteran Japanese filmmaker Shinsuke Sato, who made the live-action Bleach movie last year, as well as The Princess Blade, Gantz, and Inuyashiki. The movie is actually getting a theatrical Us release next month, for those interested in seeing it on the big screen. It looks seriously epic and awesome from this trailer.

You may think you know Miike Takashi but really, if you’re mostly familiar with horror classics along the lines of Audition or samurai epics like 13 Assassins you barely know the half of it. Keen on further exploring the wilder side of Japan’s most prolific filmmaker, Vienna’s Slash Film Festival beckoned with an opportunity I couldn’t pass up on: the chance of seeing JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable – Chapter 1 on the big screen. Miike’s most recent cinematic offering is an adaptation of Araki Hirohiko’s popular manga of the same name. In it we are treated to the highly unusual high school escapades of Josuke, better known as – you guessed it! – JoJo (whose cockiness and vanity are admirably portrayed by Kento Yamazaki)....
