Sneak Peek Idw Publishing's "Mars Attacks: Occupation" #5, available August 17, 2016, written by John Layman and illustrated by Andy Kuhn, with covers by John McCrea, Ryan Brown and Ed Repka. Plus take a look @ footage of the Martian bodycount from Tim Burton's 1996 feature "Mars Attacks!":
"...the 'Martians' came. The Martians saw. The Martians conquered. Now the space invaders cruelly rule over humanity, but 'Ruby Johnson' has something to say about that..."
Before it became a movie (1996), "Mars Attacks" was a science fiction themed trading card series, released in 1962, featuring illustrations by artists Wallace Wood and Norman Saunders.
In that scenario, the invasion of Earth by 'Martians' is under the command of a corrupt Martian government who conceal the fact from the martian populace, that Mars is doomed to explode and therefore proposes a colonization of Earth.
The cards depict futuristic battle scenes and bizarre methods of Martian attack. The story...

I know we’re never supposed to judge a book by its cover, but we do whether consciously or not, and I certainly did with this one. Just look at it: a semi-naked woman with a piece of cloth barely covering her lady parts, squatting(!), with the title “Monster Massacre” overhead. It’s like an 80s hair metal band cover for an album of songs about drinking behind the bleachers, staying out past curfew and not doing your homework – the stench of adolescence is unfortunately all over this anthology of short comics based around monsters.
Which isn’t to say it’s all bad – put your best foot forward as they say, and this book does just that with a classic comic by legends Jack Kirby and Joe Simon called The Angel of Death. It’s about a small town menaced by a monster in the night and has smatterings...

Once again, a look into the future, with some very interesting looks at the past, including the reprinting of a comic that was never released in America in the first place, the infamous Elseworlds 80 Page Giant that was pulped because of concerns about Superman’s babysitter.
And of course, a whole lot of #3 issues, which is traditionally the issue where Spider-Man guest stars.

Quick — what did you do last year on Memorial Day? Can't remember, right? Maybe a picnic or barbecue with grandma? Yawn. So, what are you planning to do this year? If you're not sure yet, I have a cool suggestion...one that doesn't involve heat stroke and overcooked hot dogs.
If you want to do something unforgettable, and if you are a fan of all things genre (and we know you are because, hello, you're surfing FanGirlTastic), you might want to check out an event in Texas known as Comicpalooza.
What exactly is a Comicpalooza anyway? I posed that very question to Comicpalooza's founder and chairman, John Simons, who said, "[Comicpalooza is] a comic con, horror con, sci-fi con, anime con, steampunk con and gaming con all rolled into one. But it also features a lot of entertainment that you see at other types of festivals, like music, film and art."

Firebreather
Blu-ray | DVD
Directed by Peter Chung
Starring Dana Delany, Jesse Head
Cartoon Network
Release date: March 22, 2011
Firebreather is a new movie/TV pilot which was on Cartoon Network around Thanksgiving of last year, but is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. Firebreather is based on the Image comic by Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn and it follows the adventures of a teenager named Duncan (Jesse Head), as he moves to a new school and deals with the normal high school stuff.
The only difference is that his dad is a 150-foot lizard monster named Belloc (Kevin Michael Richardson). Duncan’s dad is the king of the Kaiju, a race of giants who threaten mankind. Duncan, however, is half kaiju and half human, so while most of the time he looks fairly normal, in times of stress he will get all scaly, grow wings, and breathe fire. As the future leader of the kaiju,...

You could pretty much spot the exact moment when most of the Twitter users in our feed finished downloading "Portal 2" today. A few tweets complaining about long download times popped up, but the consensus among those who've squeezed in a few minutes with Valve's new sequel thus far seems to be positive.
In other discussions, Gabriel Hardman and Andy Kuhn broached the topic of creepy commissioned art requests. Being an in-demand artist comes with its blessings and curses, and the piece Kuhn described definitely fell into the latter category. Find out what that was about down below, along with Bryan Lee O'Malley's birthday note to Edgar Wright and who's picking up bees at the post office.

Chicago – My love for “Venture Bros.” is well-documented. It’s one of the funnier cartoons of the last decade and I recently complained about the half-season released only on DVD. I apologize. Now that the whole recent season is available on Blu-ray all is right with the world. And Cartoon Network has released another animated adventure to piggy back on one of their best shows in the intriguing “Firebreather.”
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Venture Bros.” lost a bit of pop culture steam through the one thing that can really kill a show — lack of new episodes. This collection features episodes that started airing in October of 2009 and only 55 episodes have been produced overall since the program premiered in 2003. There’s a fine line between overexposure and painful absence. I wish the “Venture Bros.” team would produce more episodes (and was happy to hear that there will be at least two more seasons).

Another fun convention I'm looking forward to being a part of happens in May! Comicpalooza happens on May 27-29, 2011 and we'll be playing a new game!
For Immediate Release:
Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock World Championship at Comicpalooza
Houston, TX – April 4, 2011 – Can’t decide who gets the last slice of pizza? Who rides shotgun? Action movie or chick flick? The quality of your life may depend on your skill at winning these decisions. For untold years the standard of friendly conflict resolution was the kid’s game Rock Paper Scissors, but that has all changed. The method for the 21st century is Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock, invented by Sam Kass and Karen Bryla. The game was brought to the masses in 2008 in an episode of the Big Bang Theory, where Jim Parsons explains the rules.

What should have been a cool homage to the Godzilla legacy mixed in with an after school special ends up being a dreadful mess that combines unimpressive animation with sloppy writing to tell a standard beat-em-up monster movie.
The original Firebreather comic by Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn is a kind of silly story aimed at a teen audience, supplied with plenty of kitschy angst. Our hero Duncan (Jesse Head) is a troubled kid who has a hard time adjusting in high school because of his different appearance and whose divorced parents share custody of him, forcing him to divvy up his week between them. The twist being that his mom (Dana Delany) is human while his dad is Belloc (Kevin Michael Richardson), King of the Kaiju, a race of giant monsters from Monster Island (basically a Godzilla stand-in).

Firebreather, Cartoon Network's animated film adaptation of the Image comic, hit the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray this week.
Directed by Peter Chung (Aeon Flux) and based on the book series by Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn, Firebreather promises "fierce action in the clash of two worlds where monsters roam the Earth and past secrets are exposed."
At the heart of the tale, a teenage boy named Duncan struggles to find his place as half-dragon and half-human. His mom wants him to pay more attention to his homework, while his dad - a 120ft, fire-breathing Kaiju from the depths of the Earth - wants him to follow in his monstrous footsteps.
Duncan faces trials by fire from two worlds: in one, overcoming his father's challenges to prepare for the Kaiju throne; in the other, coping with life in a new high school. Firebreather is a story...

Wrapping up the report for this morning, I'm already predicting that tomorrow's feed will include numerous well-articulated critiques of the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con hotel registration process, but for now, the big topics of the day are Julian Assange's arrest in London and reactions to the "Tron: Legacy" soundtrack that's shown up on Amazon for $3.99.
Jhonen Vasquez and Jeremy Haun's responses to the new music from Daft Punk for "Legacy" differ greatly, and the range of posts about WikiLeaks' founder being taken into custody was mixed as well.
