In Freeform’s adult animated comedy Praise Petey, New York “It” girl Petey St. Barts (Annie Murphy) becomes a southern cult leader after a father she never knew dies and leaves her his rather complicated legacy.
That includes an entire working town, a throng of comet-obsessed cult members and one hot (and morally superior) redneck named Bandit (John Cho). In desperate need of food and direction until an alien race comes to collect them, Petey’s prophesized arrival seemingly guarantees for the citizens of New Utopia that they will once again have a sense of purpose.
But the former New Yorker with mommy issues and (failed) magazine dreams understandably finds all the human sacrifice and human Shih Tzus (Alfred Molina) a little too much. So instead of merely taking the reins from her father, Petey — alongside Bandit, best friend Eliza (Kiersey Clemons), right-hand Mae Mae (Amy Hill) and old recordings...

Photo: ‘Searching For Sheela’/Netflix Little Made Of Lots Netflix’s newest documentary, ‘Searching For Sheela’, follows Ma Anand Sheela, former secretary to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, founder of the Rajneesh movement in India, who was sentenced to twenty years in United States prison after the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack as she returns to India for the first time in decades for an interview tour. This documentary comes off the heels of the 2018 true-crime docuseries, ‘Wild Wild Country’, which depicts and recaps the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, Ma Anand Sheela, and the Rajneesh movement as well as the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack. Prior to watching the documentary, I was unfamiliar with the source material and had not seen ‘Wild Wild Country’ which made for me being not the most informed viewer of ‘Searching For Sheela’ so be sure to read my review from that lens and perspective. Searching For Sheela
This is a 58-minute journey with Ma Anand Sheela which says more about the people around her, journalists and socialites she meets during her first visit to India in 35 years who are seen gushing fawning and ingratiating themselves with mine-is-bigger-than-your comparisons of her notoriety with theirs.
So we have journalists Shoma Choudhury victim-shaming herself in front of a bemused Ma Sheila by talking about her own disgrace and ostracization (she was disgraced media baron Tarun Tejpal’s most trusted lieutenant).
“I am without shame,” Ma Sheela confesses, and both the women giggle conspiratorially. Right on, Sisters.
It is huge fun watching Ma Sheela’s fawn-a-friend encounters in India. Socialite Bina Ramani tries her sisterly solidarity act amidst soft sips of champagne, by bringing up her brush with the law after Jessica Lal’s murder.

Sheela Birnstiel, formerly known as Ma Anand Sheela, or more simply Sheela, emerged as by far the most colorful character in the Duplass Brothers’ “Wild Wild Country” documentary series, released by Netflix in 2018.
While the Rajneesh religious group rose and fell, Sheela’s individual narrative included impassioned entanglements with media and prison time for attempted murder.
Sheela today considers herself absolved. She argues that she’s served her time and, therefore, can no longer be considered a criminal. Her answer to so-called “cancel culture” is to stand her ground and refuse to be canceled.
“I have no explaining to do. People understand me from where they are — from what is their understanding about themselves and their lives, they project it on me. And I have no complaints about it, either,” she tells Variety. “Good, bad, ugly, it makes no difference. I am me. Their opinions will not change me.”

Netflix released the first official trailer for “Searching for Sheela,” a short feature film follow-up to its smash hit docuseries “Wild Wild Country,” about the controversial Oregon Rajneesh cult and its spiritual leader, Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The film follows the enigmatic cult leader’s right hand woman, known as Ma Anand Sheela, an intensely devoted follower who instantly became the most compelling and unsettling character in the series. “Searching for Sheela” will capitalize on the fascination with this dangerously charismatic woman.
Here’s the official synopsis provided by Netflix: “Osho’s controversial and sassy ex-secretary, Ma Anand Sheela returns to India after 34 years of exile and people just can’t get enough of her. If you watched Netflix's documentary Wild Wild Country back in 2018, do we have news for you. Netflix recently announced that Searching For Sheela, a documentary about the later years of Ma Anand Sheela, is coming soon to the platform. An exact release date has not yet been announced, so in the meantime, here's a quick refresher about Sheela's controversial, stranger-than-fiction life.
Sheela is one of the main figures in Wild Wild Country, which traces the controversial Oregon community led by Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh in the 1980s. In the '80s, she was Rajneesh's most trusted advisor and vocal supporter, while also being the subject of numerous accusations. The documentary depicts her battle with residents of the nearby town of Antelope, who objected to Rajneesh's community, called Rajneeshpuram. Sheela fought back politically, moving community members ("sannyasins") into Antelope proper to take control of the town government through municipal elections.

Slowly but surely, India and Indian-ness are foraying the world of showbiz in the West, and much of it has to do with the country's growing presence in the Ott space. The success of Delhi Crime at the International Emmys is, as Shefali Shah rightly said, a cherry on the sundae, but Indian stories and Indian talent of the digital space have been making a strong impact the way Bollywood or our mainstream cinema never really did.
We draw up a list of notable Indian artistes and themes that are carving a space in the worldwide Ott space.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Her Hollywood debut and musical sojourns in the West had mixed responses, but her Ott foray in the international arena seems more assured. After "Isn't It Romantic", she will soon be seen in "We Can Be Heroes" and "The White Tiger". The actress has also sealed a two-year multimillion-dollar,...

Priyanka Chopra Jonas remembers when she was a teenager watching Sarah Michelle Gellar in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in her native India — and later, when she moved to the U.S. for high school.
“I was like, ‘That’s who I want to be,’” Chopra Jonas, 37, tells Variety. “She was an amazing teenage idol. But what if at 13, I had seen someone who looked like me? The only person that I saw at that time who was culturally representative of me was Apu from ‘The Simpsons,’ and he was played by a white guy, which I found out much later, obviously. But as a teenager, I didn’t see representation of myself in American pop culture or even global pop culture outside of the stereotypical caricatures of South Asians.”
Over the course of her U.S. career, Chopra Jonas has aimed to course-correct Hollywood’s treatment of South Asian actors and people behind the scenes.

The too-strange-to-be-fiction documentary series “Wild Wild Country” took Netflix by storm back in March 2018, with its lurid exploration of controversial Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, his personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela, and their community of followers in Wasco County, Oregon. It was inevitable this wild saga, which led to one of the largest bio-terrorism attacks ever committed on U.S. soil, would make its way to a bigger screen. But it’s not the one you think.
“Sheela,” the movie inspired by the story behind the series, has been set up at Amazon Studios, per Deadline. Personal secretary turned convicted bio-terrorist Sheela will be played by Priyanka Chopra in a film set to be directed by Barry Levinson, in a script from Nick Yarborough.
Ultimately sentenced to 20 years in federal prison but paroled after just 39 months, Sheela served as Osho’s lieutenant throughout the early 1980s, helping to move his...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has set up Sheela, an intriguing drama that Barry Levinson will direct with Priyanka Chopra starring as Ma Anand Sheela, a guru who perpetrated what is called the largest bio-terrorist attack executed on U.S. soil.
She was the personal secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh from 1981 through 1985, and supervised his move to relocate his thousands of followers — known as the Rajneesh — to the small town of Wasco County, Oregon. Sheela was appointed president but unbeknownst to both of them, this move would be met by resistance from the local community that led to a full blown war within the county. As a way to claim governing control of the land, Sheela devised a plan to fix the election by recruiting hundreds of homeless people to register to vote in their favor. Ultimately, she was convicted of conspiring to poison local restaurants with salmonella to prevent the opposing locals from voting.

It was hot and cramped inside the small two-story building where the cast and crew shot “Documentary Now” last June. Despite the Oregon humidity, there was a lightness on the set where they were midway through shooting fictional cult documentary “Batshit Valley.” And despite the presence of Oscar nominees Owen Wilson and Michael Keaton, it felt more like an ultra-low-budget indie.
“Batshit Valley” serves as the two-part season premiere for IFC’s fiercely authentic parody of iconic non-fiction narratives, and also is the beginning for a show that must reinvent itself. Co-creator and star Bill Hader was unavailable as an actor in Season 3 due to his commitment to HBO’s “Barry,” and the show used this as an opportunity to bring in a brand-new assortment of talent.

The Ways told the Brauns about their discovery of controversial ’80s cult figure Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, his fierce lieutenant Ma Anand Sheela, and their run-ins with the tiny town of Antelope, Ore. The colorful and often unbelievable escalating...

In the counterculture haven of the Santa Monica Mountains’ Topanga Canyon, three sets of brothers celebrated their surprise Netflix Emmy contender “Wild Wild Country:” Directors Chapman Way, 31, and his 27-year-old brother Maclain; twin New Yorkers Josh and Dan Braun, whose rising production and sales company Submarine Entertainment shepherded the documentary; and executive producers Mark Duplass and his brother Jay, who served as the Ways’ mentors.

According to our racetrack odds, the Emmy front-runner for Best Documentary/Nonfiction Series is the nature program “Blue Planet II.” But are we underestimating Netflix‘s “Wild Wild Country”? The six-part series generated water-cooler discussion after it premiered in March and could appeal to the same voters who awarded this category to the true-crime docs “The Jinx” in 2015 and “Making a Murderer” in 2016.
Directed by Maclain Way and Chapman Way, “Wild Wild Country” recounts the story of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, his charismatic personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela, and the escalating conflict between his spiritual followers and the Oregon community that surrounded them. The series has five total nominations, also including bids for its directing, picture editing, sound editing, and sound mixing.

The woman known for uttering the defiant phrase “tough titties” isn’t backing down.
Ma Anand Sheela, whose dogged defense of the controversial Rajneesh spiritual movement and its attempted takeover of a small Oregon town made her the star of the hit documentary series Wild Wild Country, says there’s nothing about her actions she would change.
“I do not regret anything,” she insists. “If there is again opportunity I would do it exactly the same. Maybe little bit even more feistier. Because now I have also experience under my belt.”
The Netflix series directed by Chapman and Maclain Way, which is contending for five Emmy Awards, recounts Sheela’s role in the early 1980s spearheading the construction of a massive religious commune for followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Residents of rural Wasco County, who considered the Rajneeshees a cult and fought the group tooth and nail, found in Sheela a formidable opponent.

Kurt Russell had a couple of good reasons for hosting a reception on Saturday for “Wild, Wild Country,” the Netflix documentary about the 1970s and ‘80s Oregon-based Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his community of followers.
Not only did Russell’s nephews, brothers Maclain and Chapman Way, direct the six-and-a-half-hour series, but the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor lived near the Rajneeshees in Portland at the time.
“I happened to be in Portland when a lot of this was going on so when they started talking about it, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah—the Bhagwan! He was around,'” Russell told Variety.
The breakout character of the series is Bhagwan’s assistant Ma Anand Sheela, who spent 24 months in federal prison after being convicted in 1984 of attempted murder when more than 700 people in The Dalles, Oregon suffered food poisoning after Sheela instructed followers to contaminate local salad bars with Salmonella.
