Exclusive: The Fall of the House of Usher standout Willa Fitzgerald and The Continental star Colin Woodell have been tapped as the leads of Pulse, Netflix’s first original medical procedural. They join previously cast Justina Machado in the drama series from first-time creator Zoe Robyn who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside veteran Carlton Cuse.
In Pulse, while the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center navigate medical emergencies, young ER doc Danny Simms (Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship.

Netflix has a lot of content on its virtual shelves, but it’s missing something so huge that it’s almost shocking.
They have no original medical drama for their subscribers.
Pulse will change all that.
Netflix announced today that Carlton Cuse and Zoe Robyn will team up for the new show, which already has its first star attached.
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3: Everything We Know
Justina Machado is the first person to join the cast as a series regular.
This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into the procedural space, although their procedurals tend to have season-long arcs.
The Lincoln Lawyer, The Diplomat, and The Night Agent all have touches of procedural dramas in them, even if they don’t focus on episodes of the week.
Whether Pulse falls more in line with what we know as procedural content or not remains to be seen.

Grey’s Anatomy is traditionally one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired programs, so it’s only natural that the streaming giant enters the medical procedural space on its own.
Netflix has handed out a series order to Pulse, what it says is its first procedural medical drama series. The series, which is created by Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer), is set at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies and revolves around Dani Simms, a young ER doctor who is unexpectedly promoted to chief resident amid the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship. Justina Machado returns to Netflix after starring in its One Day at a Time update and stars as Natalie Cruz, a doctor who serves as chair of surgery and emergency medicine.
Robyn and Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan, Netflix’s own Locke and Key) will serve as co-showrunners. Both will exec produce the series.

As fans of CBS’ The Equalizer know, this is not a series that shies away from controversial topics. So it only makes sense that the drama would have Robyn McCall (played by Queen Latifah) take on a client trying to solve an Asian hate crime, after an innocent bakery owner is found dead.
The episode, which airs this Sunday at 8/7c, not only spotlights the disturbing increase of anti-Asian hate and violence in America, particularly in New York, but relied on anecdotal stories from cast member Liza Lapira‘s life, and that of her family and friends.

The March 6 episode of The Equalizer is not only timely — it deals with Asian American hate crimes in the U.S. — but series regular Liza Lapira also worked with the writer, Zoe Robyn, and shared her and her family’s stories for the script. Before the episode was written, Lapira was approached to see if she’d speak with the writers and then spoke with Robyn, who did her own research as well. “Zoe listened to a lot. She was extremely open and collaborative. I shared many personal stories and sent articles of hate crimes,” Lapira says. “I told her about someone I looked up to as a kid named Fred Ho. He was a musician, artist, and activist who was passionate about social justice and equality. As fierce a warrior as he was, he was also an extremely kind and caring spirit. A lot of that influenced the Ray character.
