Tollywood C/o Kancharapalem director Venkatesh Maha is being trolled heavily for criticising the Kgf films in a discussion about commercial and unconventional films in a recent interview. The five directors — Venkatesh Maha, Shiva Nirvana, Mohan Krishna Indraganti, Nandini Reddy and Vivek Athreya — are among some of the Telugu filmmakers known for occasionally making relatively experimental and less formulaic films than most other mainstream, commercial filmmakers in the industry. EntertainmentThis is by no means an exhaustive list and is only a starter pack! Tnm StaffMahesh Narayanan's C U Soon, released directly on Amazon Prime Video, has been getting rave reviews from viewers. Of special significance is the fact that the film was shot in under 20 days with an iPhone camera and the entire story is told through screens. These factors have piqued the curiosity of viewers and as a consequence, the film has attracted several people who may not have watched a south Indian — let alone Malayalam — film before this. Even film critics who don't usually review south Indian films have been lavish in their praise of C U Soon. Although there are four big film industries in the south, Indian cinema is often equated to Bollywood. Among those who haven't watched south Indian films, there exists a perception that "down south", the films made are all loud, unrealistic and grossly exaggerated.

Film CommentaryWhile Savitri is full of effusive praise for the men in her life, she has only contempt for her daughter-in-law. Sounds familiar?Sowmya RajendranThis piece is not a review and contains spoilers. If you haven't watched the film and don't like to read spoilers before watching, please don't read ahead. Nandini Reddy's Oh! Baby starring Samantha in the lead is the Telugu remake of a Korean film titled Miss Granny. The original has been remade in different languages across the world and has tasted success everywhere. And why not? The war among women in a patriarchal society is present everywhere too. You would think that bearing the brunt of living in a culture where men and masculinity are valued over women and femininity would bring women together as natural allies. But that's hardly the case – patriarchy is sustained and celebrated because people of all genders buy into it...

TollywoodAdopting the body language of a 70-year-old is difficult, but Samantha gives it a reverent, comic touch in this Nandini Reddy directorial.Krishna SripadaI never thought I would pick a Britney Spears song to describe a movie, but ‘My loneliness is killing me now, I must confess I still believe... give me a sign, Hit me baby one more time’ comes pretty close to summarising the movie. Let’s chuck the usual way of discussing movies for a bit. I tell you a little about the plot, a little about the actors, male and female (hinting probably at my chauvinism and long-standing conditioning as a result of watching narrow-gauge movies hyping up the protagonist), a little about the cast and crew, and finally, whether the conflated effort works or not. How boring. An unconventional movie like Oh! Baby deserves better. Oh! Baby’s premise is nothing spectacular. A 69-year-old lady,...

Apart from earning critical acclaim, the movies, which released post 2010, had a young star cast and spoke of problems that the millennial generation could easily relate to. The films had protagonists who waded through tough phases in life with minimum emotional drama or theatrics that were done to death in Telugu cinema. TollywoodThe web series platform is offering women directors and artistes opportunities to break freePriyanka RichiIn a territory dominated by testosterone-driven potboilers, the Telugu audience have something new on offer: the coming-of-age web series. What adds greater zest to these ‘girl-next-door’ web flicks are the women donning many hats behind and on the screen, increasingly capturing the online space and shattering many stereotypes that the regional film industries have set for eons. Creating the ‘everyday woman’ For Jahnavi Dasetty, a Nift student from Kurnool, acting was always a passion. After a couple of short-film stints, Jahnavi got her first break through Mahathalli-Mahanubhavudu (produced by Wirally South) that instantly hit a chord with the audience. The web series reflects reality laced with humour, and Jahnavi in Mahathalli dons the many hats of a script-writer, director and an actor. “My parents were initially unhappy with the decision. But now, as Mahathalli has become a household name, they appreciate the progress,” Jahnavi says. For Jahnavi, the characters in Mahathalli (now a YouTube channel run by Wirally) are the women you meet in your everyday life. “While working forMahathalli-Mahanubhavudu, I always dreamt of making a Tollywood version of the Superwoman. Only after a year into the production of Mahathallidid I realise that Mahathalli in Telugu means ‘superwoman’,"Jahnavi confesses. Jahnavi Dasetty The web series medium has created a splash by depicting strong women characters, especially for an audience which has been bombarded with doe-eyed bahus in designer sarees, struggling against evil relatives in logic-defying plot twists. “Web series give writers the time and space to convey ideas with greater ease. For example, Seshamma from Posh Poris, was crafted with so much detail that for Aditi Myakal, who played the role, Seshamma has become a second identity,” says Gautami Challagula, who has cemented her position as a web-series specialist with Posh Poris, Social and Manna Muguri Love Story. “Women share very special bonds in their personal lives which rarely get depicted on screen. So, my girl-gangs are women who are like men in Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara and Dil Chahta Hain - they share a buddy-comical relationship," she adds. Gautami Challagula After her seven-year stint in an It company, Gautami pursued her post-graduation in Communication. Her final year thesis focused on woman-relationships portrayed on screen. “Until the 2000s, Telugu films like Ladies Special, Swarnakamalam, Ninne Pelledata had women who conversed about their everyday struggles. But of late, there are very few movies that pass the Bechdel test,” Gautami points out. Sketching characters Though popular comedy sketch group channels like the All India Bhakchod (Aib) and The Viral Fever (Tvf) proclaim themselves to be pro-women and feminist, an analysis of their online content shows minimal portrayal of women characters on-screen. Women are confined to the role of a homemaker or a crazy colleague among ten other male characters. “The onus to create strong women characters lies with the script writers and they are often men. Web series have managed to create a positive stride with a lot of women working on and behind the screens,” says Sri Vidya, who is part of the all-girls channel ‘Girl Formula’ on the online entertainment content provider, Chai Bisket. Girls Formula was born after the girl-gang made a video Naa Saavu Nenu Chasta - a girl’s version of an already existing video on Chai Bisket. And, with the success of the video, the idea of an all-girls channel that would break women-related taboos was born. “In Hindi, we have very bold content on women being produced and the audience is also quite receptive. But while doing videos in regional languages, one must keep in mind the sensibilities of our audience,” Sri Vidya says. Sri Vidya The challenges Though web series give directors greater freedom, the challenge to gain attention is bigger compared to movies. “People often watch online content in their personal spaces unlike movies which give them a collective experience. With the legion of content available online, the task to capture people’s attention within the first 5 minutes into a video is quite a challenge," says Nandini Reddy, writer and creative head of Gangstars, Amazon Primes’s first Telugu web series. With a star cast of Navdeep, Shweta Basu Prasad and Sidhu Jonnalagadda, the series had opened to positive reviews. Nandini Reddy Nandini Reddy, who also has critically acclaimed movies like Ala Modalaindi and Kalyana Vaibhogame to her credit, does not believe in creating content to preach. “Content makers are not perfect human beings with morals to preach to their audiences. Online content has made a distinction with its raw portrayal of flawed humans, people with whom the viewers can identify,” she says. Creating content online comes with the additional baggage of haters, and it's the women artistes who are often at the receiving end of such abusive comments. “Though a lot of viewers drop in congratulatory notes and positive feedback, body-shaming is an issue that every woman faces on-screen. Its demoralising despite the change in notions we try conveying on-screen,” says Jahnavi Dasetty. The flexibility to explore One of the many advantages of web series over movies is the absence of a censor board, says Nandini Reddy. “Lust Stories, a Netflix original that explores women’s sexuality, would have been shelved if it was to pass off as a movie. Web series also attract investors who experiment with novel content, being assured of decent returns under a minimum budget," she adds. But for Jahnavi Dasetty, a watch over the language is necessary as a lot of regional web content is also consumed by children. “Mahathalli has a wide audience that includes homemakers, senior citizens and children as well. Humour doesn’t necessarily require vulgar language,” Jahanvi opines. “Web series will eventually find a bigger market and can generate more revenue than their television counterparts. Maybe then, the latter medium will start thinking about reinventing itself,” says Gautami.

ReviewAmazon Prime’s first Telugu series is partly entertaining; however, the series doesn’t quite dig deep into the story it wants to say.Hemanth Kumar C RGangstars, created by Nandini Reddy, is a quirky comedy set against the backdrop of the Telugu film industry where a chaotic work environment on the sets of a film lands its lead characters in a big mess. Directed by Ajay Bhuyan, the Amazon Prime series has several popular stars from Telugu cinema - Jagapathi Babu, Navdeep, Swetha Basu Prasad, Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Posani Krishna Murali, and Rahul Ramakrishna playing important roles, along with newcomer Apoorva, and Shivaji. While the series offers its share of hilarious moments, it falls prey to the paradox of storytelling - It’s entertaining as long as it doesn’t try to tell a story, and once it does, it goes all haywire. The series is about Kd - Kumar Das - a notorious gangster (Jagapathi Babu), who will do anything to recover his money from people who owe him. One day, he’s told that he might die soon due to cancer and his world turns topsy-turvy all of a sudden. Since he has amassed a lot of wealth, he’s advised to invest in a movie to turn his black money into white. And this decision intertwines his life with four other principal characters of the show - Ajay (Siddhu Jonnalagadda); Keerthi (Apoorva Arora); Vishwa (Navdeep); and Aishwarya (Shweta Basu Prasad). For a show which delves into the process of filmmaking, and the quirky characters that inhabit this world, Gangstars offers some genuine laugh out loud moments as long as it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Take for instance, there’s Pala Subramanyam (Posani Krishna Murali), a milk producer-turned-movie producer, who has a track record of producing several blockbuster films. The first time he appears on screen and claims that he isn’t a benami for any politician, it reminded me of a real life incident where similar allegations were made on a noted Telugu film producer. Another time, when Vishwa (Navdeep), popular actor, refuses to follow instructions from a choreographer (Dhanraj), this too comes across as a dig at the high-handedness of actors on movie sets. Among others, there’s Varun Sastry (Mirchi Sastry), a prototype of every filmmaker who wants to be in the good books of the lead cast. The film that Vishwa and Aishwarya are part of is named ‘Love You Raja’, a reference to Posani Krishna Murali’s famous catchphrase. However, all this fades in comparison to another character Red (Rahul Ramakrishna), who dreams of becoming a movie star and amassing more followers than Shahrukh Khan on Twitter. Rahul Ramakrishna is one of the primary reasons why Gangstars works, to an extent, and the actor, who shot to fame with Arjun Reddy, brings his verve to the forefront once again. There’s a memorable scene where he recites a few dialogues along with Aishwarya (Shweta Basu Prasad), who loses her cool instantly. If that doesn’t make you chuckle, then there’s very little else that the series offers to make you invest in the characters. The series was originally meant to be a feature film; however, with multiple characters in the fray, it was deemed to be a potential idea worth expanding into a series. The problem is that there’s very little in Gangstars which does justice to what it sets out to achieve. Initially, it begins as a story of Kd and his quest to reform himself; and all of a sudden, it becomes a story of Vishwa and Aishwarya’s turbulent relationship, while Ajay and Keerthi grapple with their own feelings for each other. There’s very little backstory to each of the characters and even when the series offers an insight into how much their lives have changed, it doesn’t stay with you. It feels like there are multiple storylines and themes all vying for the same space. At times, it takes itself too seriously and we see that in the long sermons from Posani and Annapurna about the brutal truth of filmmaking and stardom. In other instances, the characters are absolutely clueless about what they are doing, especially towards the latter half of the show. Ajay Bhuyan, director, manages to connect all the threads and concurrent subplots in the end, but the ending itself feels too rushed and out of place. In the end, Gangstars feels like a missed opportunity to create something unique and charming. It has its moments, when it takes a sly dig at the film industry, but when it focuses on its own story, it becomes too self-aware of what it wants to do and it never finds its groove. It’s nearly four hours of content, split into 12 episodes, but even then, Gangstars leaves you with a feeling that it has barely scratched the surface of its own potential.
