How much does personal history humanize world history? Genealogist Randy Schoenberg sets out to answer that existential question in Matthew Mishory’s documentary “Fioretta,” which captures his quest to share his centuries-long family history as a prime example of the persecution and murders of Jews in Austria during a horrific time in history.
Randy leads the Schoenberg family affair, which brings together various generations on a trek to Vienna to revisit the graves of and memorials to his ancestors. Randy himself was previously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the narrative feature “Woman in Gold” after he sued the Austrian government in 2005 on behalf of Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann (played by Helen Mirren) to return five Gustav Klimt paintings that were stolen from her family by the Nazis.
Now, Randy wants to reclaim the city of Vienna itself for his own family, as well as seek out the gravestone of his oldest known ancestor,...

Parliament of Rooks is a tale of dark fantasy, forbidden romance, menacing forces, and enchanting characters, inspired by the striking, gregarious, black-feathered bird, known as a rook.
"Parliament of Rooks is my homage to stories I grew up loving by fellow Brits like Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights,” says Abigail Jill Harding. "This is the first series I've written and drawn myself. It's very ambitious and I'm excited for people to read it.

When a painting becomes as famous as Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss, a kind of populist appropriation can take place which dissuades those with a serious interest in art from taking it seriously. One participant in Ali Ray’s documentary suggests that students have posters of it on their walls because of its beauty, or because they think it’s romantic. This may be doing some of them a disservice. It’s isn’t all that difficult to observe that there’s something off about the embrace that it depicts. The man’s hands are on the woman’s throat; she appears to be trying to prise them off. This is the ambiguity which really cements the picture’s power and has intrigued scholars and members of the public alike ever since its first exhibition in 1908.

There is plenty to discover about the iconic ,poster-friendly image as well as the artist’s influences and obsessions
So ubiquitous is the style and imagery of Gustav Klimt that it reaches into bizarre corners of pop culture: the kids animation Mia and Me borrows unashamedly from Klimt’s whorls and rectangles, and of course there’s that episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the undead steal posters of The Kiss from hapless college students. This, partly, is what makes Klimt a blockbuster figure in contemporary art culture; the eye-watering auction prices his work commands is another factor.
Hence the unusual direction of the newest offering in the Exhibition on Screen strand; as opposed to the customary approach of focusing on a specific show or oeuvre, here the subject is a deep dive into Klimt’s celebrated poster favourite which – inevitably – opens out into a wider examination of the artist’s obsessions and influences.

Vienna-based Terra Mater Studios, a subsidiary of Red Bull, is developing its first fictional series “Salon of Sugar.”
The historical drama will focus on Berta Zuckerkandl, born in 1864: a writer, journalist and a hostess of an important literary salon in Vienna, frequented by the likes of Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, director Max Reinhardt or Stefan Zweig.
“Composer Gustav Mahler actually met his wife Alma there,” says producer Nina Steiner, teasing other familiar faces bound to appear in the show, from Freud to Georges Clemenceau. Verena Puhm writes.
According to the makers, by creating an environment where revolutionary ideas and discussions flourished, Berta found herself at the very center of cultural and intellectual evolution during a “transformative” era in European history.
“I was drawn to this story because it encapsulates the timeless struggle for freedom and equality amidst a backdrop of societal change. Berta’s journey embodies the resilience and...

Miyazaki’s mid-2010s work undoubtedly influenced Kurosawa’s film. Both Yamato (California) and To the Ends of the Earth were shot by the same cinematographer, veteran Akiko Ashizawa. Miyazaki had also worked with Kurosawa once before, as an assistant director on Tokyo Sonata (2008), and the two remained in touch.

Actor John Malkovich is in Berlin to debut his latest pic Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes, and during a press conference Monday, he spoke to reporters about his relationship with his co-star, Julian Sands, who has been missing since January.
“Julian and I were very, very close,” Malkovich told reporters in Berlin.
“I’m a godfather to his first son from his first marriage to Sarah, who I know very well. I introduced him to his second wife, and we have been close since we met in 1983 on the set of The Killing Fields. It’s a very sad event.”

Black Panther 2 is in cinemas now, and it provides an emotional return to Wakanda.
The film, titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is a follow-up to the 2018 blockbuster, which starred Chadwick Boseman in the lead role.
Boseman died in August 2020, and Letitia Wright has stepped into the lead role as Shuri alongside Angela Bassett, who plays her mother, Ramonda.
The film is earning praise from Marvel fans, who have been left “sobbing” in the cinema due to the film’s references to Boseman’s character.
Unlike other Marvel films, Wakanda Forever does not spend too much time setting up future projects, and instead brings the studio’s Phase Four to a moving close on its own merits.
However, that isn’t to say there aren’t references to other Marvel characters: two blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter eggs are actually present in two separate news bulletin scenes featuring a cameo from American broadcaster Anderson Cooper.

A seemingly disposable line from Avengers: Endgame spoiled the arrival of Black Panther 2’s villain, it has emerged.
Tenoch Huerta will play Namor in Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which is in cinemas from Friday (11 November).
The character, the king of an underwater city named Talokan, serves as the film’s primary antagonist, which may not come as a surprise if you detected a certain interaction in the 2019 Avengers film.
The dialogue arrived early on in the film, around the 26-minute mark, during a scene in which those who survived Thanos’s destructive finger-snap discuss what is happening in their respective territories.
At one stage, Natasha Romanoff Aka Black Widow, who hosts the hologram meeting, addresses Black Panther character Okoye (Danai Gurira).
Okoye briefly mentions that there’s been an underwater earthquake off the coast of Africa and, when Natasha asks her how Wakanda will deal with the incident,...

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is halfway through season 1, so I'm going to take a moment to praise the incredible costumes of characters like Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and Disa (Sophia Nomvete and the Mvp of the series).
I'm not alone in this admiration. Tweets and other posts on social media have compared some of the costumes to paintings from the Pre-Raphaelite, Orientalist, and Symbolist movements in art history. Twitter user @LeoPrasidis compared Galadriel's golden leaf crown to the one in Léon François Comerre's "The Girl with the Golden Wreath," Míriel's hair net to Herbert Gustave Schmalz's "Zenobia's Last Look Upon Palmyra," and Galadriel's armor to Joan of Arc paintings from John Everett Millais, and Charles-Amable Lenoir.
Two more beautiful The Rings of Power visual references to 19th century art. This time, it's Galadriel next to Leon Francois Comerre's The Girl with the Golden...

Director Matthew Mishory and producer and financier Bradford L. Schlei announced the start of production for Rubber Ring Films’ and Schlei’s Stone Canyon Entertainment’s “Finding Fioretta,” which will start early next year.
The feature documentary chronicles the life of genealogist Randol Schoenberg who is on a quest to find the centuries-old gravestone of his oldest known ancestor — a woman who died in the 1600s in the Jewish ghetto of Venice, Italy. In 2005, Schoenberg successfully sued the Austrian government on behalf of Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann, recovering the five Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family by the Nazis. That case inspired the movie “Woman in Gold” starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren.
Mishory spoke about the project, saying, “America’s obsession with genealogy is really an obsession with storytelling.” He added, “Randy has made it his life’s work to tell a 500-year story about his family, and...

A first-time visitor probes the unlikely connection that unites the Czech festival’s oldest feature and its hottest new presentation.. Be Prepared!, a 1923 feature about the early Scout movement in what was then Czechoslovakia, came to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in a freshly restored version ready for everything… except for the midsummer heat. The film, titled after the Scouts’ famous motto, had a single screening scheduled at the city's Municipal Theatre. Nestled a short walk from the thermal springs which are the spa’s raison d’être this grand edifice known for its decoration by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Franz Matsch, not for its ventilation system. In spite of that, I found myself there at 1pm on sunny Monday afternoon, prepared to discover all there was to know about inter-war Czechoslovak Scouts. Director Svatopluk Innemann's film was, perhaps unsurprisingly, a propaganda piece with everything the genre entails: sloganeering,...
