If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

A pair of siblings on the run after a robbery take refuge in a house with mysterious time-warping qualities, only to find that the law isn’t the only thing they have to fear. Things Will Be Different, the latest from the Rustic Films roster comes from longtime Benson & Morehead editor Michael Felker, who makes his feature writing and directing debut with this mind-bender that very much fits the mold of his frequent collaborators. Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

As a fan who’s always ready to warp into the realms of time travel movies, my anticipation for Things Will Be Different was as high as my hopes for a DeLorean to appear on my driveway. Helmed by Michael Felker, in what marks his leap from editing to directing, with frequent collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Something in The Dirt) producing, this film is a time-twisting tale that packs a lot more than just temporal leaps.
Things Will Be Different throws estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) into a temporal tangle that’s more twisted than spaghetti in a black hole. After a diner meet-up goes awry, they find refuge in an abandoned farmhouse that’s more than it appears. What initially seems like a lucky escape turns into a chronal puzzle, ensnaring them in a time they can’t easily zip back from.

Childhood friendship can be a time of innocence, enchantment and perpetual excitement as portrayed in Sophia Silver’s modest yet assured debut feature, Over/Under. But the mutual intoxication of the two girls whose intense bond is tracked from age 9 through 13 falters when they slip out of sync in their hunger for adult experience. Graced by lovely, natural performances from its young leads and the warming light of the New England summers during which most of its key developments unfold, this is a gently stirring coming-of-age drama observed with the unmistakable pangs of memory.
Stella (Anastasia Veronica Lee) and Violet (Emajean Bullock) are inseparable 9-year-olds when we first meet them in 2002, staying at their respective families’ summer houses in an unnamed beach town but usually conspiring to spend the nights together on sleepovers. If you’ve ever been evicted because your landlord wants to “renovate” and hike the rents, seen your favorite local businesses killed to make room for expensive, low-quality replacements, or watched a racially diverse community turn into an affluent white enclave, you probably already suspect gentrification is an expression of pure evil. Well, now you have proof courtesy of the horror-comedy “Vampires vs. the Bronx,” which drops on Netflix this weekend.
From veteran “SNL” director Osmany Rodriguez (“Brother Nature”), “Vampires vs. the Bronx” follows a group of kids who discover that the gentrification affecting their neighborhood is an invasion of vampires. And uh, just in case you thought they might be the friendly kind, one of them explains that they work in real estate, so, yeah, pure evil. As the kids defend the Bronx at all costs, hilarity — and a lot of gory bloodshed — ensues.

Ever wonder what effect a crosstown might have on vampires? Netflix’s upcoming horror comedy is an educational look at an urban problem. There’s a lot of things happening in the neighborhood right now. Keep your eyes open. That may sound vague, but the new Vampires vs. the Bronx trailer is about a silent threat: gentrification. And it’s not just any old white people buying up property in the Boogie Down Bronx; it’s ancient old people who stay that way by sucking the blood out of locals while draining the community of anything special. Have you noticed those missing kids’ posters?

FX on Hulu dropped the trailer for “A Teacher” on Wednesday, a half-hour limited series starring Kate Mara and Nick Robinson as a teacher and student who get wrapped up in a dangerous affair.
In the video, which you can view above, you’ll meet Claire Wilson (Mara) and Eric Walker (Robinson), who at first appear to be a normal, happy couple enjoying a nice date together. “This plays like a penny whistle jammed up an orangutan’s butt.” Lines like that come easy to English writer-director Chris Morris, whose satirical sensibility has made him one of “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci’s inner-circle collaborators and a bit of a controversy magnet in his own right. Remember “Four Lions,” the unapologetically offensive 2010 comedy about an inept British terror cell that opened with the bloopers from an al-Qaida-like video recording and ended with a pair of clumsy mujahedeen killing Osama bin Laden by accident? That was Morris’ idea of a reasonable way to confront the hysteria over jihad: Fight extremism with extreme comedy.
In Morris’ latest powder-keg feature, “The Day Shall Come,” the only thing more outrageous than the jokes are the facts that inspired it. The film ends the way so many American action movies do: with a terrorist attack averted and a couple of special agents shaking...

"If necessary, we'll call on the dinosaurs." Entertainment One in the UK has unveiled the first official trailer for The Day Shall Come the new film from acclaimed British filmmaker Chris Morris, who last made Four Lions in 2010. This premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and opens in theaters this fall, thankfully fairly soon because this looks genius. Based on 100 true stories, the "explosive" new film from Chris Morris is an emotionally gripping, laugh out loud thriller that exposes the dark farce at the heart of the homeland security project: It is harder to catch a real terrorist than it is to manufacture your own. A preacher in Miami is tricked by the FBI into becoming the liaison between them and a real terrorist group. Marchánt Davis stars as Moses; he's joined by Anna Kendrick, Danielle Brooks, Denis O'Hare, Kayvan Novak, Jim Gaffigan, Miles Robbins, Pej Vahdat, Adam David Thompson,...

M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass is a sequel to both his 2016 multiple personality horror Split and his 2000 superhero drama Unbreakable. The fact that those are two different genres doesn’t appear to bother Shyamalan, who makes a bold attempt to mash them both together, with occasionally interesting dividends, even if the end result is ultimately disappointing.
Following on from Bruce Willis’ surprise appearance in the final scene of Split, Glass picks up the story of Unbreakable‘s David Dunn (Willis), who has apparently spent the previous 18 years wearing a green hooded poncho and keeping the streets of Philadelphia safe as super-powered vigilante The Overseer. Not many filmmakers are, in and of themselves, a brand name. To be certain, M. Night Shyamalan is one. You have a certain expectation when you go into one of his movies. Sometimes, he meets them, while at others, he falls well below them. Two years ago, Split was heralded as a return to form for him, while also connecting to one of Shyamalan’s most well regarded previous works, Unbreakable. Well, hitting theaters this week is Glass, the follow up that brings together both of those flicks. Unfortunately, it’s a total letdown and a mess. This is hardly on par with Unbreakable. Sadly, it’s closer to Lady in the Water than anything else, and that’s not a compliment. The film is a follow up to Split, also functioning as a long in the making sequel to Unbreakable. At the outset, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is on...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Sinner” Season 2, Episode 7, “Part VII” and theories about the upcoming finale.]
Just like last year, “The Sinner” spent its penultimate episode of the season in a lengthy flashback to reveal answers to many of the questions that had been spun out from the beginning. “Part VII” revealed that not only was Marin (Hannah Gross) still alive, but that she was indirectly responsible for the mess everybody is currently in, including her son Julian (Elisha Henig) poisoning two Mosswood members with tea brewed with Jimsonweed.
The revelations actually begin a few days prior to Julian’s fateful act. While Marin has left her son behind to be raised at Mosswood, in the intervening years she tried and often failed to deal with some of her issues, whether it meant taking drugs, going into rehab, or finding religion. When she had finally gotten what peace she can, she returns to Mosswood not to do “the work,...

In the Season 2 premiere of USA’s “The Sinner,” a young boy has killed his parents at a motel by giving them tea laced with… something. It doesn’t take long for Ambrose (Bill Pullman) to figure out what the 13-year-old boy used.
Jimsonweed (datura stramonium), a.k.a. devil’s snare, is a member of the deadly nightshade family. IndieWire spoke to showrunner Derek Simonds about the premiere, including why the show settled on using this particular plant and method for murder.
“We did a lot of research. What would be a deadly poison that occurs in the natural world in upstate New York? There were a few options but Jimsonweed proved to be the deadliest,” he said. “What we liked… is that it’s a very common shrub.

"I'm looking for a traveling companion." Epic Pictures Releasing has unveiled the first official trailer for a "mind-bending", psychological sci-fi thriller titled Imitation Girl, made by writer and director Natasha Kermani. Imitation Girl stars Lauren Ashley Carter (seen in the films Darling, King Rat) as a wandering space alien who lands in the middle of the New Mexico desert and takes on the form of another woman (hence the imitation). Her counterpart is a former concert pianist living in New York City. Eventually their paths will cross, as an exploration of two lost souls. The cast includes Neimah Djourabchi, Adam David Thompson, Catherine Mary Stewart, Stefanie Woodburn, Sanam Erfani, and Kevin O'Rourke. This looks a bit too bland for my tastes. Not enough real, edgy sci-fi, just some ideas but nothing tangible. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Natasha Kermani's Imitation Girl, direct from YouTube: When an alien...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Rod Blackhurst. Writer: David Ebeltoft. Cast: Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti and Adam David Thompson. There is one thing a film should never be - boring! Failing that, a film should at least be informative. Unfortunately, director Rod Blackhurst and writer David Ebeltoft fail in both of these endeavours, with the zombie non-thriller Here Alone. In the film, the protagonist Ann (Lucy Walters) spends much of her time camping. Finally, two more characters are entered into the mix. But, by this time, your attention will be fading. The film does attempt to deliver a few interesting survival skills, many of which would get you killed in reality. As well, the film's static narrative slows the film's pace. Here Alone was an attempt, by the director, to "convey tone and feeling;" the tone is serious, while the feeling is boredom.

Arriving on VOD platforms and on iTunes today courtesy of Vertical Entertainment is Rod Blackhurst’s Here Alone, a post-apocalyptic drama about three people who cross paths and find their lives forever intertwined as the world around them goes to hell. Written by David Ebeltoft, Here Alone stars Lucy Walters, Adam David Thompson, Gina Piersanti, and Shane West, and recently Daily Dead caught up with Thompson to discuss his involvement with the film. During the interview, he discussed how Here Alone became a turning point in his career, his experiences collaborating with everyone on the project, and even chatted about how much he enjoyed working on another genre movie that came out a few years prior, Dennis Iliadis’ +1.

"Thank you for what you did. Not a lot of people would do that nowadays..." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a post-apocalyptic survival thriller titled Here Alone, which is pretty much just another zombie horror survival movie continuing the zombie trend. This one stars Lucy Walters as a woman surviving on her own, who encounters two other survivors that mess things up. Yes, this sounds way too similar to Z for Zachariah, which is probably why this hasn't picked up any extra buzz over the last year. The full cast includes Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. We initially posted a teaser trailer for this film last year, but then we forgot all about it until now. A second trailer has emerged for Rod Blackhurst's Here Alone. This second clip is longer and shows many more scenes. Released by Vertical Entertainment, this trailer also shows more of the film's central characters. The film stars: Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti and Adam David Thompson. Slated for a late March Video-on-demand launch, Here Alone looks to satisfy zombie film fans or those who like survivalist scenarios. The film's two minute plus trailer is hosted here. The trailer expands on the film's story, quite a bit. Initial scenes show a family evacuating a town or city. These scenes were missing from the first trailer, which was released in April of 2016. Significantly, it also shows one of the initial, central characters missing from later scenes. As well, the ending is hinted at with "you brought us out here for a reason." From the scenes, one uninfected character may have nefarious intentions.

It doesn’t seem like post-apocalyptic zombie films will be going away anytime soon. In fact, there seems to be a good amount of independent films that use this as the basis for their stories. Here Alone seems to be one of these films, but it looks and sounds like it will be a good one. The movie recently won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, so that’s gotta say something about it. We now have a trailer for you to watch and it definitely sparked my interest.
