Author Rick Riordan once candidly described the 2010 film adaptation of his novel The Lightning Thief as “my life’s work going through a meat grinder.” Indeed, that early attempt at adapting the first book in Riordan’s kid-lit series Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a cheesily generic fantasy film that deviates from the book’s blueprint to an extent that fans can’t forgive. What, then, to make of the new Disney+ series, which has the imprimatur of Riordan as executive producer and co-writer, and yet feels even further away from the spirit of the books?
If fans are seeking nothing but fidelity, they’ll find a faithful outline here. While Chris Columbus’s 2010 film aged up its heroes, the show’s version of Percy (Walker Scobell) and his companions all seem like real middle schoolers. And the plot points, at least based on the four episodes made available to press for review,...

Austin Abrams and Midori Francis starred in the holiday romantic comedy series, from Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps and Nick Jonas’ Image 32.
Described as a whirlwind Holiday romance, the series revolved around cynical Dash (Abrams) and optimistic Lily (Francis) who traded dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they passed back and forth at locations all across New York City, finding they had more in common with each other than they would have expected.
The season 1 finale, which aired in November 2020 and now serves as the series finale, saw Dash (Abrams) and Lily (Francis) finally kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve at NYC’s famed Strand Bookstore.

Between the iconic location (New York’s famed Strand Bookstore), the perfect time (New Year’s Eve at midnight) and the ludicrously romantic ambience (literal fireworks!), the final scene of Dash & Lily‘s first season finale is about as perfect as it could be. Eagle-eyed “Dash & Lily” fans who have already binged their way through the show’s eight-episode first season know that while Dash (Austin Abrams) and Lily (Midori Francis) spend the show running around New York City at Christmastime, completing dares while they fall in love via notebook with a little help from their friends, one key character only makes it outside twice: Lily’s brother, Langston.
“No, you are as observant as I am,” Troy Iwata, who plays Langston, said of his character’s self-imposed house arrest over winter break. “On our first day, when we went through the script, I went up to (creator Joe Tracz), who wrote it, and I was like, ‘So Langston literally never leaves his room?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’ So I said, ‘Great, I have some ideas for costuming.

Netflix's new series Dash & Lily is a heartfelt adaptation of David Levithan and Rachel Cohn's young-adult book series, but it also features a wonderful idea for a Pixar movie. The series, which premiered on Nov. 10, follows two teens named Dash and Lily living in NYC who form a special bond by communicating through a red notebook. As the two correspond back and forth, Lily makes a few references to a Pixar movie named Collation, which is about a stapler and a piece of paper that fall in love. While the movie pops up multiple times throughout the season, it's actually completely made up for the series.
"There was so much Collation stuff that got cut for time," executive producer Joe Tracz told TVLine. "Our favorite writers' room parlor game was figuring out which celebrities would voice which office supplies. 'What punny catchphrases do they all have?' At one point,...

People are quickly falling in love with Netflix's Dash & Lily. The series, which premiered on Nov. 10, follows two teens named Dash (Austin Abrams) and Lily (Midori Francis) living in NYC, and it's basically a holiday rom-com wrapped into eight episodes. Though the first season ties things up in a nice little bow, we're still hopeful for a second season. Not only is it based on the young adult book series Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn - meaning there is plenty of inspiration to draw from for more episodes - but it sounds like the cast and creators are already on board for another season.
During a set visit back in November 2019, showrunner Joe Tracz told Popsugar that he already has a few ideas for how he would continue the story. "It's so great to write a first season knowing what the second...

Merry early Christmas: Netflix dropped the trailer for its upcoming holiday rom-com series “Dash & Lily” Friday, giving you a taste of the magical relationship Lily (Midori Francis) and Dash (Austin Abrams) will form one Christmas break when he discovers a notebook that she left in her favorite New York City book store for some lucky boy to find. Well, that boy is Dash, and he plays along with her “Do you dare?” requests inside the pages, leaving his answers for her to find when she returns for the book.
The two are clearly drawn to each other, and become closer and closer the more time they spend “together” running around NYC. The only problem they seem to face is that Lily loves Christmas and Dash hates it. Oh, and the fact they’ve yet to actually meet in person, of course.

Exclusive: A project to develop a biographical stage musical about 1970s singer-songwriter Harry Chapin has gotten the support of Chapin’s wife Sandy and brothers Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin, who will serve as consultants on the project.
Patriot Productions, most recently a producer on Broadway’s Be More Chill, is readying Harry Chapin: The Story of a Life for an industry presentation this spring. With a book by Patriot partner Michael F. Mitri, the musical’s score would consist entirely of Chapin’s songs.
Chapin, who died in 1981 at 38 in a car accident, is best known for his Grammy-nominated mega-selling 1970s hits including “Taxi” and “Cat’s In The Cradle.” The musical also is expected to chronicle Chapin’s extensive humanitarian work, especially his devotion to ending world hunger.

Last season, director Stephen Brackett and librettist Joe Tracz teamed up for the musical “Be More Chill,” which found much favor with the teenage demographic of Broadway theatergoers. Just two months after that show shuttered, Brackett and Tracz return to the Great White Way with another teen-oriented tuner, “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical,” which officially began its limited run at the Longacre Theatre on October 16.
Featuring a score by Broadway newcomer Rob Rokicki, “The Lightning Thief” hews closely to the popular young adult novel by Rick Riordan (which also inspired a movie franchise). Set present day, the musical follows the titular demigod Percy Jackson, played by Chris McCarrell, who attends Camp Half-Blood after he learns of his parentage to hone his skills and ward off the demons of Greek mythology.

Broadway’s fall season kicked into gear last week, with no fewer than eight new shows in previews, including three that just began performances. Overall box office, alas, was pretty much stuck in the summer doldrums, with total receipts of $29,320,908 up a measly 1% over the previous week – and that’s with three additional shows running.
Total attendance of 254,824 was up by a barely-worth-noting .4%.
Keep in mind, a hefty percentage of the newcomers were at subscription-heavy (so discount priced) non-profit theaters, keeping receipts low. Also, none of these shows had been reviewed – so raves, pans or anything in between hadn’t yet gotten the word out. That said, only one show attracted some big-spending ticket buyers. More about that Lin-Manuel Miranda-related exception below.
In order of opening nights, the newcomers are:

“Playing the character is literally a dream come true” says George Salazar of his character Michael in “Be More Chill” the new musical from Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz. Salazar’s Michael is the type of nerdy outsider audiences can’t help but root for. The actor sat down to discuss his performance and the show’s long journey to Broadway. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Salazar says that he fell in love with the character immediately because he “saw so much of myself” in Michael. Growing up mixed race, Salazar says “I didn’t see myself represented” in media, but “Be More Chill” has allowed the performer a chance to infuse so much of himself in the character. He admits that its grown to a point where “Michael is kind of like my soul mate.”

When composerlyricist Joe Iconis and bookwriter Joe Tracz's hard-rocking, super-charged and very well written science fiction musical comedy Be More Chill ended its month-long premiere engagement at Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey less than four years ago, the thought of a Broadway production may have seemed as far-fetched and phantasmagoric as the plot of its source material, Ned Vizzini's same-named 2004 novel.

To quote a song from the tenacious – and tenaciously enjoyable – Be More Chill, the Joe Iconis-Joe Tracz musical arrives on Broadway with just enough of an “upgrade” from last summer’s Off Broadway staging to fill its new home and the greater expectations that come with the move. The costumes, the scenic design, the projections of computer gimcrackery and video game effects all seem buffed, beglittered and amped up just enough to suit Broadway demands without swamping the heart and humor that caught everyone’s attention in the first place.
By now, you might have heard about Be More Chill, if only for its unusual route to Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre (where it opens tonight under the swift and generous direction of Stephen Brackett). Be More Chill arrived on Broadway to a big welcome, beginning previews and breaking the seven-performance house record at the Lyceum Theatre with a gross of $738,384, a virtual sell-out with 98% of seats filled for those first seven previews.

Box office for the 29 productions tallied $30,511,551 for Broadway’s Week 38 (ending Feb. 17), a 10% boost over the previous week.
Total attendance for Week 38 was 252,489, a 1% jump from the previous week, and 90% of total potential.
