“Barbie is a great time at the movies, perfect for the Summer. And to paraphrase the old ad line from Mattel, Barbie…it’s swell!!” – Jim Batts review
Today, WaterTower Music released Barbie (Score from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), composed by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. The score is featured in the juggernaut film Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures – listen Here.
The film, currently in theaters everywhere, has already shattered numerous records and is on its way to earning $1 billion at the global box office.
On composing the score, Ronson says, “Greta’s Barbie overflows with emotion in a way that inspired us to no end, not just with harmony and melody but also textures, sonics and rhythms. Sometimes Greta wanted us to elicit tears, sometimes she wanted it to feel like a disco.

Christopher Lee, born on this day in 1922, had an amazing career of fantastic performances and remains the greatest villain actor in film history. He was the last classic horror star and Wamg thanks him for all the monster memories.
Christopher Lee was married to his wife Birgit (Gitte) for 54 years.
Here, according to Movie Geeks Jim Batts, Dana Jung, Sam Moffitt, and myself, are Christopher Lee’s ten best roles.
10. Frankenstein
It’s only fitting that The Curse Of Frankenstein, the film that truly began England’s Hammer Studios’ theatrical run of full color gothic horror epics, should team their greatest stars, Peter Cushing as Baron Victor Frankenstein and Christopher Lee as his monster. This was the first big screen incarnation of the monster after Universal’s 30’s and 40’s classics with Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, Glenn Strange, and, of course, Boris Karloff. Because the Jack Pierce make-up is owned by that studio,...

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. They looked absolutely lifelike … I wanted to know how it was done.” It was done by using stop-motion animation: jointed models filmed one frame at a time to simulate movement. Harryhausen was to become the prime exponent of the technique and its combination with live action. The influence of Harryhausen on film luminaries like Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, and...

Born in St. Louis on May 27, 1911, iconic actor Vincent Price retained a special fondness for his place of origin, and that love was reciprocated with Vincentennial, a celebration of his 100th birthday in his hometown back in May of 2011 (for summary of all the Vincentennial activities go Here).
In 2011, we asked Vincent Price’s daughter, Victoria Price, to write a testimonial about her famous father toasting him on the centennial of his birth, and here’s what she wrote:
When I was a little girl, I believed that to come from St. Louis made you a member of a very desirable club.
I got this impression because whenever my dad met someone from his hometown, he greeted him or her as though he had just found a long-lost friend. Immediately they would discuss where they had “gone to school,” which I later learned did not mean college, as it did everywhere else in America,...

Sean Anders made a name for himself in Hollywood as a writer of rowdy raunchy comedies for the last dozen or so years. For the past decade, he’s become a double threat by directing several of his screenplays, such as That’S My Boy, the two Daddy’S Home flicks, and the second Horrible Bosses movie. With this Friday’s new release Instant Family, Anders goes for the hat trick as co-writer, director, and producer. Plus he’s gotten a PG-13 rating rather than his usual R. As you’ll read here, this is in service of a story that’s close to his heart. Recently Mr. Anders visited St. Louis to promote the film. I was able to ask him a few questions, along with 590 the Fan and Ksdk.com’s Dan Buffa, on October 30.
Jim Batts: This is one of the few comedies that could also be called a “message” movie.

On February 11th, 1936, Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, before his family moved to Jupiter Florida, where his father served as Chief of Police. Young Burt excelled at sports and played football at Florida State University. Born 94 years ago today, Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. He spent a year in recovery before returning to the U.S. where he began working as a plumber. The acting bug bit after filling in for an ailing summer-stock actor and he studied the art at the New York-based American Theater Wing.
