On paper, the concept of Maggie Moore(s), which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is incredibly fascinating: a darkly comedic murder mystery about a bumbling police chief (Jon Hamm) and his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed) trying to solve the mystery involving the deaths of two women who have the same name and were killed around the same time. Add in the fact that it is loosely based on a true story, and you have all the proper ingredients to make the next Coen Brothers masterpiece, and it seems like the film’s director, John Slattery, thought so as well as he takes the Coen Brothers influence and runs with it. I just wished that he ran in a different direction though because the end result is a tonally dissonant, poorly shot and overall underwhelming film.
It is very obvious that the film looked to Coen Brothers’ films...

If his post-“Mad Men” career has taught us anything, it’s that Jon Hamm is a natural comic actor who happens to be great in dramatic roles rather than the other way around. At the risk of downplaying his exemplary work as Don Draper, the 52-year-old has seemed most in his element in the likes of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and especially last year’s criminally underseen “Confess, Fletch.” “Maggie Moore(s)” finds him somewhere in the middle of the comedy/drama spectrum as a small-town police chief investigating the murders of two women with the same name — an intriguing premise to be sure, but one that Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery, in his sophomore directorial effort, struggles to bring to a satisfying conclusion.
Part of the problem is that it isn’t actually a mystery. Beginning with a title card informing us that “some of this actually happened,...

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.
Directed by John Slattery, Hamm’s multi-Emmy-nominated Mad Men co-star, Maggie Moore(s), which world premiered Monday night as part of the Tribeca Festival Spotlight Narrative section, is on paper an extremely clever premise for a murder mystery. There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.
The first Maggie to die (played by Emily Blunt) is married to Jay (Micah Stock), the owner of a restaurant franchise who plans to become the Howard Schultz of submarine sandwiches.

Forget about who’s on first: It’s all about which Maggie Moore is the real Maggie Moore.
Crime caper comedy “Maggie Moore(s)” stars Jon Hamm as a small-town police chief who investigates the back-to-back murders of two women, both named Maggie Moore. Per the official synopsis, things quickly ratchet up in the comedy film.
Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery produces and directs from a script by “Halloweentown” scribe Paul Bernbaum. Tina Fey, who previously starred alongside Hamm in “30 Rock” and will act alongside him for the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical, portrays one of Maggie’s next-door neighbors, who becomes key to the investigation.
Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Mary Holland, and Happy Anderson also star.

"I pretty clearly said 'scare her', not 'set her on fire!'" Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film titled Maggie Moore(s), the second feature directed by actor John Slattery (his directorial debut was God's Pocket with Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2014). This is premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in June before it opens in limited theaters later in June. Maggie Moore(s) takes place in a dusty desert town where nothing ever happens, as a police chief is suddenly faced with the back-to-back murders of two women with the same name. (Hence the title of the film.) Who did it and why? Jon Hamm stars as police chief Jordan Sanders, who must deal with all kinds of small town shenanigans and secrets. The cast includes Tina Fey, Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Happy Anderson, & Mary Holland. The trailer has a darkly comedic edge to it,...

After decades of Octavia E. Butler's work being under-adapted, FX debuted the first TV adaptation of "Kindred," based on the author's esteemed 1979 novel, on Dec. 13, 2022. However, the series will not be moving forward with another season.
On Jan. 30, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively announced that FX has canceled "Kindred" after just one season. According to the outlet, showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins plans to shop the FX drama around to other networks, as he previously expressed to Popsugar a vision of having multiple seasons.
Jacobs-Jenkins's historical science fiction series, now streaming on Hulu, follows the story of Dana (Mallori Johnson), a young aspiring writer who moves to Los Angeles and suddenly finds herself mysteriously traveling back in time to a 19th-century plantation in antebellum Maryland where her late mother somehow exists.

FX is not proceeding with a second season of Kindred, its drama series based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel, which ran exclusively on Hulu. The news comes a month and a half after the eight-episode first season was released as a binge drop Dec. 13. Launching to largely positive reviews, Kindred has not been able to create buzz the way fellow new 2022 FX scripted series The Bear has done.
It is very rare for FX to cancel a series after one season; the network is known for carefully curating its slate and taking time to develop projects, sometimes redoing a pilot, and most of its shows stick around for awhile.
From showrunner and executive producer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Kindred centers on “Dana James” (Mallori Johnson), a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has uprooted her life of familial obligation and relocated to Los Angeles, ready to claim a future that,...

Kindred will not move forward at FX.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Disney-backed basic-cable network has canceled the drama based on Octavia E. Time-travel stories are, inevitably, almost always about the present. They’re sort of a crucible for our values and ideas about the world, when transposed suddenly to the distant past or future. But FX’s “Kindred,” based on the 1979 Octavia Butler novel, owes its identity as much to the problems and possibilities of TV in the 21st century as it does to one of the landmark speculative fiction stories of the 20th century. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins saw something happening as he watched shows like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” inaugurate the age of the antihero in the late ’00s. He saw an emphasis shift in the structure and storytelling priorities of certain TV shows, one that might perfectly fit the way Butler’s novel plays with the movement of time and how it affects the characters.

For playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, who identifies himself as a “super fan” who aims to amplify the things he loves on the big screen, the decision to adapt Octavia Butler’s “Kindred” was “instantaneous” after a 2010 reread of the beloved sci-fi novel sparked a vision of a TV adaptation.
“Kindred” follows Dana (Mallori Johnson), an aspiring TV writer who moves to Los Angeles and sparks a relationship with a waiter named Kevin (Micah Stock) after a family reunion with her aunt and uncle goes south. Amid her personal turmoil, Dana begins to question her sanity when she is violently pulled back in time to a 19th-century plantation.

Kindred is finally here — all eight episodes are now streaming on Hulu — and it marks the first on-screen adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s celebrated sci-fi novel.
The series began in medias res, with Dana (played by WeCrashed’s Mallori Johnson) returning from her latest jump through time and immediately soaking in a bath to soothe her sore, severely whipped back. That’s a big deviation from the book, in which we first met Dana at the hospital recovering from her final jump — which left a permanent mark — and with police questioning whether she was being abused by her husband Kevin.

FX’s “Kindred,” streaming on Hulu, is the long-awaited adaptation of what is arguably sci-fi trailblazer Octavia E. Butler’s most well-known novel. Released in 1979, “Kindred” is a literary mash-up that is part slave narrative, fantasy and historical fiction. What many regard as Butler’s magnum opus transports a modern Black woman back in time to a plantation where she experiences life as an enslaved woman. To bring this work to life, which has been in the Hollywood pipeline since at least the 1990s, FX tasked Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, noted for his plays “Appropriate” and “An Octoroon” as well as Pulitzer Prize finalists “Gloria” and “Everybody.” Jacobs-Jenkins also served as a producer on HBO’s critically acclaimed, multiple Emmy Award-winning limited series “Watchmen,” which propelled the horrific Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 into popular conversations.
Which is all to say, this adaptation of “Kindred” has some serious bona fides bringing it to life.

The story that drives "Kindred" is deceptively simple: Dana James (Mallori Johnson) is a modern-day Black woman who is violently yanked back in time to a pre-Civil War plantation. It doesn't take a genius to map out what comes next. Modern-day sensibilities will clash with antebellum-era subjugation, and though audiences will cringe away from the brutality, unwavering resilience will carry our protagonist through. Haven't we seen this narrative in all the agonizing iterations that came before?
But anyone with a passing knowledge of trailblazing sci-fi author Octavia Butler knows better than to assume simplicity. Her genre-bending novel made waves for its complexity, telling a story in which misery porn is not a requirement to communicate the horrors of slavery and Dana's fragility is every bit as true as her strength. Writer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins assures that his eight-episode television adaptation, which was produced by FX and will stream on Hulu, follows suit.

"How long was I gone?" FX Networks has revealed the full trailer for a mini-series titled Kindred, arriving for streaming soon on Hulu. Adapted from the celebrated novel Kindred, by Hugo Award-winner Octavia E. Butler, this is executive produced by Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel for their company Protozoa Pictures. A young aspiring writer discovers secrets about her family's past when she finds herself mysteriously being pulled back & forth through time to an 1815 plantation. An interracial romance threads through Dana's past & present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront secrets she never knew ran from her past. Starring Mallori Johnson as Dana James, Micah Stock as Kevin Franklin, Ryan Kwanten as Thomas, Gayle Rankin as Margaret, Austin Smith as Luke, David Alexander Kaplan, Sophina Brown, and Sheria Irving as Olivia. This is a good trailer, better than the teaser, but I'm still not hooked on this series yet.

Believe it or not, an onscreen adaptation is a first for trailblazing author, Octavia Butler. The Black literary icon spent nearly three decades as one of the most prominent authors in sci-fi, publishing her first stories in the '70s and writing all the way into the early '00s, until her 2006 death. Over the course of her career, Butler won several awards and made history as the first sci-fi writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. Attempts have certainly been made to adapt her beloved works to the big and small screen alike, but the upcoming FX series "Kindred" has beaten them all to the finish line.
