Netflix has officially confirmed the cancellation of the animated series “Q-Force,” a queer comedy following an undervalued group of LGBTQ+ superspies as they go on personal and professional adventures.
Prominent figures in comedy such as Sean Hayes, Wanda Sykes, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers of the popular “Las Culturistas” podcast, actors David Harbour, Gary Cole and actress Laurie Metcalf rounded out the main voice cast for the series.
Rogers first revealed news of the show’s cancellation in May during a guest host appearance on the “Attitudes!” podcast, also sharing that he recorded his lines in a closet during the Covid-19 lockdowns. And while the show didn’t attract rave reviews from critics, Rogers praised its cult fanbase and spoke briefly on the show’s legacy during the same podcast.
“The people that loved it really loved it, and the good news is that it will always be on Netflix,” Rogers said.

If quality were measured in good intentions, “Q-Force” might be the show of the year.
Netflix’s new animated series sets out to tell a James Bond-style espionage tale about a gay man, Steve Maryweather (Sean Hayes), who’s been marginalized from a fictionalized version of the CIA — here called the Aia — due to his sexuality. After years of isolation in the West Hollywood station thanks to a homophobic agency chief (Gary Cole), Steve gets vouched for by a mentor (Laurie Metcalf) and ends up taking his group of queer spies around the world. He fights both to protect the planet from evildoers and to make room in the tradecraft complex for queer people.
The show, created by prolific TV writer Gabe Liedman, toggles back and forth between heightened and grounded sensibilities. It attempts both to dazzle with self-consciously over-the-top spyjinks and to comment on the power of queer communities.

Ah, progress. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights has led to same sex marriage, anti-discrimination laws, the repeal of the trans military ban, and finally — gay superheroes. Now we can rest easy knowing queer people have their very own animated Netflix series. Created by Gabe Liedman, writer on “Pen15” and Jenny Slate’s former comedy partner, “Q-Force” follows a group of misfit intelligence agents who take matters into their own hands when the higher ups try to bury their gays. The first teaser for the animated comedy inspired major side-eye from queer social media users, and now Netflix is throwing a full official trailer to the wolves.
Here’s the official synopsis, per Netflix:
“Steve Maryweather, Aka Agent Mary, was once the Golden Boy of the American Intelligence Agency (Aia), until he came out as gay. Unable to fire him, the Agency sent him off to West Hollywood to disappear into obscurity.

Netflix released a trailer for “Q-Force,” an animated series starring Sean Hayes, Gary Cole, David Harbour, Patti Harrison, Laurie Metcalf, Matt Rogers, Wanda Sykes and Gabe Liedman that launches Sept. 2.
“Q-Force” follows Steve Mayweather, Aka Agent Mary (voiced by Hayes), who was once the leader of the American Intelligence Agency (Aia) until he came out as gay. “Q-Force” is created by Liedman, who executive produces alongside Hayes, Todd Milliner, Ben Heins, Mike Schur and David Miner.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

Hulu’s coming-of-age comedy PEN15 won its first major award tonight, but the creators/stars/executive producers were not on hand to receive it.
“Gotham Awards, thank you!,” co-creator, star and exec producer Anna Konkle wrote on Twitter Monday night after PEN15 was named winner for Breakthrough Series – Short Form. “Wish we could be in NYC with you celebrating. Instead, over here on S2 set with our tits strapped down, shooting exteriors till midnight..”
The comedy series, which films in Los Angeles, is currently shooting its second season. Production is going full-steam following some logistical challenges early on, which prevented the producing team from flying to New York for the Gotham Awards.
PEN15, which Konkle and Maya Erskine co-created with Sam Zvibleman, is set in middle school, with Konkle and Erskine playing versions of themselves as 13-year-old outcasts in the year 2000.
The off-beat comedy got its first major awards recognition in July when it landed a Writing for a Comedy Series Emmy nomination, which Erskine and Konkle shared with Stacy Osei-Kuffour.
At the Gotham Awards, PEN15 won against fellow streaming comedy newcomers, Hulu’s Ramy, Netflix’s Russian Doll and Tuca & Bertie and Amazon’s Undone.
PEN15 is executive produced by Erskine, Konkle, Zvibleman, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone, Becky Sloviter, Marc Provissiero, Brooke Pobjoy, Debbie Liebling, and Gabe Liedman.

Netflix is set to add another adult animated show to its burgeoning slate, Variety as confirmed.
The streamer has put out a series order of “Inside Job” from “Gravity Falls” and “Disenchantment” writer Shion Takeuchi. The show will be the first series Takeuchi produces under her recently-signed overall deal with Netflix.
The 20-episode adult animated series will be produced at Netflix Animation and is described as a workplace comedy set in the shadow government, where every conspiracy theory — from the Illuminati to Reptoids — is true, and one woman struggles to keep the chaos under wraps.
“Gravity Falls” creator Alex Hirsch will co-executive produce the show.
“I’m beyond excited for the opportunity Netflix has given me to finally expose the inner workings of the deep state. To celebrate, I just ordered a fresh ball of red yarn for our conspiracy board,” said Takeuchi.

There have been quite a few high-quality American films about male prostitution, from John Schlesinger’s Oscar-winning “Midnight Cowboy” to Gus Van Sant’s “My Own Private Idaho” and Gregg Araki’s “Mysterious Skin,” and from France there has been Patrice Chéreau’s “L’Homme blessé,” and several films from André Téchiné, most notably “J’embrasse pas,” which translates as “I Don’t Kiss.”
Camille Vidal-Naquet’s first feature “Sauvage/Wild” is very much in the Téchiné tradition of “J’embrasse pas,” and the subject of kissing or not kissing is actually central to the narrative. What’s most impressive about this film is the intricacy of Naquet’s screenplay, which plays out in a series of subtly mirroring episodes that follow the life of Leo, a 22-year-old street kid played by Félix Maritaud, who made an impression on screen in “Bpm (Beats Per Minute)” and carries this movie almost singlehandedly.

Ten years ago, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer wrote themselves a web series about their close friendship and the glorious paradox of being dirtbag ladies in New York City. With Jacobson playing the game Mary Tyler Moore character to Glazer’s wilder Rhoda, “Broad City” was frank, incisive and, most of all, funny as hell. But it still took years for the idea of a TV version to catch on at a network that understood their vision and the apparently confusing concept that there could be more than one show about women on TV — or per broadcaster.
“We were forever compared to ‘Girls,’ which is understandable if you haven’t seen either show,” Jacobson deadpanned recently over breakfast in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, tucked in a booth alongside Glazer. “At Fox, it was like, ‘We already have “New Girl.”’ That was a real sentence!”
But the two knew they had something special.

In announcing the release date for the start of Season 5 early next year, Comedy Central whipped up a montage of Abbi and Ilana jogging, sprinting, and otherwise hitching on the back of moving vehicles across New York over the course of the show’s first 40 episodes.

Marc Provissiero and Brooke Pobjoy from Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment will also executive produce along with Debbie Liebling and Gabe Liedman.
The series hails from AwesomenessTV, marking the company’s third series for Hulu.
Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle star in the series, playing versions of themselves as thirteen-year-old outcasts in the year 2000, surrounded by actual thirteen-year-olds, where the best day of your life can turn into your worst with the stroke of a gel pen. Hulu has given the show a 10-episode first season order.

Hulu has ordered 10 episodes of middle school comedy PEN15, starring Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle.
The comedy, co-created by Erskine, Konkle and Sam Zvibleman, is described as middle school as it really happened. Erskine and Konkle play versions of themselves as 13-year-old outcasts in the year 2000, surrounded by actual 13-year-olds, where the best day of your life can turn into your worst with the stroke of a gel pen.
The project, which had been long-in-the-works, landed at Hulu based on an 11-minute presentation from Konkle and Erskine, who are best friends in real life and play best friends during a horribly awkward 7th grade.
Erskine and Konkle write and executive produce Zvibleman who is also set to direct multiple episodes.
PEN15 hails from Lonely Island, Party Over Here, Odenkirk Provissiero, and AwesomenessTV. Production will begin this summer.

“Broad City” will end after its fifth season next year, Comedy Central said Thursday.
The network also announced a first-look deal with the comedy’s creators, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, both together and independently. The deal extends to Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom’s television networks. There are three projects currently in development under this deal: “Mall Town USA,” “Platinum Status,” and “Young Professionals.”
“‘Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana may appear to be aimless and full of hair-brained schemes, but Abbi and Ilana Irl have proven to be stellar creator/writer/performer/director/producers,” said Comedy Central’s president Kent Alterman. “Their supreme focus on telling new stories, in new worlds, with new talent is nearly scary.”

“‘Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost ten years, since we started as a web series. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely,” said Glazer and Jacobson. “‘Broad City’s always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways.”
See Comedy Central’s description of the three new projects below.
Mall Town USA: Mall Town USA is an animated comedy that follows the afterschool misadventures of a 13-year-old girl navigating the complexities of life in the classic microcosm of American culture that is The Mall. Mall Town USA is written and created by Gabe Liedman (Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and executive produced by Jacobson and Glazer.

Platinum Status: Set in the hipster-heavy east side of Los Angeles, Platinum Status tells the story of professional back-up singer Noah (Eliot Glazer), a gay guy who’s always felt left out of the “community.” And after he’s dumped by his boyfriend of ten years, Noah rebounds in the least likely way: by hooking up with a girl. With help from his friends Kevin and Mimi and guidance from his kinda-sorta-girlfriend Alexa, Noah tries to evolve both in the bedroom and the recording studio. Eliot Glazer will write and executive produce and Ilana Glazer will also executive produce along with Principato Young’s Peter Principato and Brian Steinberg and Electric Avenue’s Will Arnett and Marc Forman.
Young Professionals: At age twenty-four, David Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Described as the “comic muse for the president,” Litt served as the lead writer for many of President Obama’s most memorable comedic moments, and his recent memoir, Thanks, Obama, is a New York Times best seller. Inspired by Litt’s coming-of-age in our nation’s capital, Young Professionals follows five housemates growing up – personally, politically, and professionally – in the hopelessly absurd world of Washington, D.C. Young Professionals is written by and executive produced by Litt, with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer also serving as executive producers.

One of Comedy Central’s signature comedy series, Broad City, will be coming to an end after its upcoming fifth season, set to air in early 2019.
Comedy Central is staying in business with Broad City creators, showrunners, directors and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson who have signed a development deal with the network. Under the pact, Comedy Central will have a first look at all content created and/or developed for television by Glazer and Jacobson, both together and independently. The deal also extends across all of parent company Viacom’s television networks.
Glazer and Jacobson have three projects already in development at Comedy Central under the new pact — Mall Town USA, Platinum Status, and Young Professionals.

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are packing up and moving on from “Broad City.” But first — yaaaassssss, queen, they still have one more season of the critically acclaimed Comedy Central series left. “Broad City” will be back in early 2019 for its fifth and final season, the network announced on Thursday.
But that’s not the end of Glazer’s and Jacobson’s relationship with Comedy Central. The channel has signed a new first-look development deal with both stars, which means they’ll continue to create and develop programming for Comedy Central. The deal actually covers all of Viacom’s networks, which means Glazer and Jacobson could wind up developing and producing for other outlets like MTV and Paramount Network as well.
Under the deal, Glazer and Jacobson will create and develop projects both together and separately for Comedy Central and Viacom. They already have three projects in the works at the channel: “Mall Town USA,...

“Broad City” is coming to an end, but Comedy Central is keeping its creators and stars in the fold.
The half-hour series from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson has been renewed for a fifth and final season set to premiere in 2019, Comedy Central announced Wednesday. The renewal is part of a new first-look agreement that will keep the Viacom-owned cable channel in business with the comedy duo as they draw the show that elevated their careers to a close and well after.
“We’ve had such a great collaboration with them and everyone was motivated to continue it,” said Comedy Central president Kent Alterman of Glazer and Jacobson. “We also think that they’ve really evolved so much as producers and forces of nature. They’ve got great ideas for how they want to wind down the series, and we’re excited to be doing more with them.”

It’s so, so very difficult to determine how long to stick with a series. Some shows get off to a bad start and later find their voice. Others start bad and get worse. Still others are sporadic in quality, for whatever creative reason.
But the list below is meant to help. Whether you’re looking for a new binge and want to know when a season will hit its peak, or you want to sample shows by seeing the best episode first, check out IndieWire’s ranking of the best TV episodes of 2017.
We don’t necessarily endorse starting with the best episodes — especially if it happens to be the season finale — but in a world of “too much TV,” there’s no wrong way to find the next great show. Ranked by episodic quality, these are the 25 best individual half-hours and hour-long entries of the 2017 season.

Chicago – Jenny Slate keeps getting more high profile, both in voiceover work (“The Secret Life of Pets”) and as an actress. Her latest film is “Landline,” her second with director Gillian Robespierre. In the film, Slate portrays an engaged-to-be-married “adult” who is having trouble coming to terms with her life.
“Landline” is set in 1990s New York City, just before the tech/mobile phone boom and the loss of grit in the Big Apple. Based on the growing-up experiences of Gillian Robespierre and co-writer Elisabeth Holm, the story is about transitions… Slate’s character to adulthood, the last days of being a teenager for her sister Ali (Abby Quinn) and the dissolution of their parent’s marriage (as portrayed by Edie Falco and John Turturro). It has a bit of a “slamming doors” edge to it, as misunderstandings and family connections blend into a very human story. Slate and Robespierre...
