TotalBiscuit, the online handle of John Bain — a popular and influential British video-game critic, esports commentator and YouTube creator — has died. He was 33.
Bain revealed in 2014 that he had bowel cancer, and this past April announced that the disease had spread to the point where he would be retiring from reviewing games. He died on Thursday.
TotalBiscuit’s YouTube channel has 2.2 million followers, and his videos have been viewed 867 million times to date. He also was a frequent presence on Twitch, the game-broadcasting service. TotalBiscuit began posting gameplay videos on YouTube after he was laid off from his job at a financial-services firm in 2010.
His wife, Genna Bain, posted the text of “Love Constant Beyond Death,” a poem by Francisco de Quevedo, in a tribute to him on Thursday.

Yogscast's quest to raise more than a million dollars for charity is off to a resounding start. The British gaming channel has launched its annual Jingle Jam fundraising drive, and in the first few hours of the month-long event, it has already raised more than $82,000. The centerpiece of Jingle Jam is a promotion with Humble Bundle that includes 15 different games selected by the Yogscast team. A donation of at least $25 unlocks all of the games, including titles like Mark of the Ninja and Thomas Was Alone. Thus far, more than 3,200 people have taken advantage of the promotion, and while the average donation barely exceeds the $25 baseline, the total donation pool is on pace to crack $100,000 in a single day. Those funds will be split between Mind, Doctors Without Borders/Msf, Flora & Fauna International, Special Effect, and End Polio Now. Last year, the crew of British games over at Yogscast raised more than $1.1 million for charity through Jingle Jam, their annual fundraising drive. This year, on December 1st, Jingle Jam will return, and Yogscast is hoping its fans can top 2013's record-breaking total. Jingle Jam runs for the entirety of December, with most of the action occurring over at Yogscast's Twitch channel. Each day, at least one member of the team will stream live in hopes of raising funds for five charities pre-selected by the Yogscast community: Mind, Doctors Without Borders/Msf, Flora & Fauna International, Special Effect, and End Polio Now. In return for their charitable support, Yogscast has teamed up with Humble Bundle to offer its fans a collection of games; the particular entries in the bundle will be curated by Yogscast, who will pick out specific games featured on their YouTube channel. Yogscast already runs a store,...
