Cezar Diaz’s sensitive and humane film looks back at one of the bloodiest periods of the Guatemalan civil war from the perspective of one damaged family
Here is a thoughtful, restrained drama about one of the bloodiest periods during the long civil war in Guatemala, fought between US-backed rightwing generals and leftwing insurgents. In the 1980s, thousands of men, women and children were killed, mostly by soldiers. Our Mothers starts as a straightforward drama about families, decades later, still looking for relatives who disappeared in the massacres. But what emerges is a sensitive and moving portrait of female survivors – the clue is in the title.
In 2018, Ernesto (Armando Espitia) is a hard-working young government forensic investigator. Director Cesar Diaz follows Ernesto with a low-key documentary-like style as the young man goes about his job locating mass graves and exhuming bodies. One day, an indigenous woman, Nicolasa (Aurelia Caal), walks...

Look, we’re not just tooting our own horn here when we say that Peso Pluma’s headlining set at the second night of Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase at the Moody Theater was the buzziest show in town on Wednesday. Fans started queueing up hours before the música mexicana megastar took the stage — one dedicated kid was there at 4 a.m., no typo — and all day, people were talking about the spectacle to come. But this is SXSW, and there’s never just one show worth seeing.

When it comes to talking about TV shows with a real-world message, actors, writers, and others involved have to walk a fine line between self-deprecating and self-important. Can a show make its viewers better people? Can it actually change the world? These are questions the cast and crew of "M*A*S*H" seem to get asked a lot, as a recent retrospective on the series titled "M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television" demonstrates.
The special includes commentary from "M*A*S*H" alums who tell stories about the impact the groundbreaking dramedy series had on them personally and on the world at large. In one archival footage scene, someone at a press conference asked actor William Christopher about whether the Vietnam-era show could've changed Americans' opinions about the war. "'M*A*S*H,' in its development, began to deal with social issues, and we all felt that the...

At this point in her career, Madi Diaz is realistic about life on the road. “I’m 37 years old, and this shit is heavy,” the Nashville songwriter says with a laugh. “I’m walking through the airport, and I’m carrying a lot of pedals and cables. I’m shoving my guitar in the bathroom stall.” By the time she gets to the check-in counter, she’s dreading the task of talking an airline employee into letting her bring her gear on board. “I’m just not a good fighter,...

At one point, the biggest story surrounding Back in Action was the return of Cameron Diaz, who hadn’t released a movie since 2014. But when Jamie Foxx was taken to the hospital for a “medical complication”, the attention shifted to that star. But the media redirecting their focus to Foxx and his mysterious illness wasn’t the issue for Diaz. It was the rumors and speculation about delays and her co-star’s onset behavior – all of which she is debunking.
While cameras rolled on Back in Action, word circulated that Jamie Foxx was the cause for a “miserable” on-set environment, nonsense which Cameron Diaz has no tolerance for, telling Molly Sims on her podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), “I really hate all of the things that were being said about our set…You just want to scream at the top of your lungs, like, ‘What are you talking about?’” She added,...

“Elegy to the Visitor from the Revolution” is a drama written and directed by Lav Diaz. At first, it was supposed to be a one-minute segment of a video compilation honoring the late film critics Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc. However, Diaz's creation grew beyond its initial intent, and became a full-length feature. The title alludes to the 1896 Philippine Revolution, a conflict where Filipino revolutionaries fought against Spanish colonial authorities, aiming to gain independence.
The plot is quite vague and tells a story about a woman (Hazel Orencio) from the late 19th century that travels to contemporary Philippines and witnesses intertwined narratives – about a sex worker, a musician, and a gang of lawbreakers. These segments are further divided into disparate plot lines – a sex worker (Sigrid Bernardo) awaits a client, a musician (Diaz) plays guitar by himself, and three criminals are figuring out a way to make some money.

Up next from indie filmmaker Todd Verow (Frisk) is a thriller titled You Can’t Stay Here, which will first be exclusively opening in New York City on January 5, 2024.
The exclusive engagement at the IFC Center in NYC will feature live Q&As from director Todd Verow and star Guillermo Diaz.
The movie takes place in NYC in the mid-90s at the height of the AIDS epidemic and follows photographer Rick (Diaz), who spends his nights cruising in Central Park.
After Rick witnesses the murder of a gay man in the park, he throws himself into a game of cat and mouse with the black leather-clad murderer.
“While set in the 1990s, the film’s themes of homophobia, social hysteria, and finding oneself in a dangerous and intolerant world are as resonant as ever today,” Verow recently said.

Jamie Foxx has been making sporadic appearances since suffering a “medical complication” back in April. But a special honor has put him back on the stage, giving a speech in which he expressed his gratitude and shared his experience with attendees.
Jamie Foxx – who was being honored with the Vanguard Award at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television Honoring Black, Latino & Aapi Achievements – delivered a ~12-minute speech at the event (as per Deadline), saying, “I want to thank everybody. I’ve been through something, I’ve been through some things.” Those things still remain shrouded in mystery, but it is great to see Foxx back in the spotlight, especially since he wasn’t even able to walk six months ago. The award was given by Jurnee Smollett, co-star of The Burial, in which Foxx played lawyer Willie E. Gary.

The Holiday may have premiered in 2006, but nearly 20 years later it remains something of a modern classic in the Christmas movie genre. For those who watch the Nancy Meyers film every holiday season — this writer included — actor Cameron Diaz’s outfits are, in addition to the sets, just as covetable today as they were when The Holiday first hit screens. And, as it turns out, putting the looks together proved to be a memorable experience for Diaz.

Evan Ellingson’s cause of death has been revealed less than a month after the actor died at age 35.
Ellingson died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.
On Nov. 5, the My Sister’s Keeper star was found dead at his Fontana, California, residence, the Sheriff’s Department said at the time. TMZ previously reported that Ellingson was staying at a sober living home when he died.
Though he hadn’t appeared onscreen in 10 years, Ellingson had several roles in projects throughout his childhood and teenage years. His most notable included playing Jesse Fitzgerald, the teen son of Cameron Diaz’s Sara, in 2009’s adaptation of Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. He starred opposite Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva in the film.
Ellingson, who reportedly started acting at age 10, also played Kyle Harmon, the son of David Caruso’s Lt.

It looks like Prime Video's cancellation spree is far from over.
Freshman dramas Harlan Coban's Shelter and The Horror of Dolores Roach have been canceled alongside With Love.
The streaming service revealed the decision on Tuesday evening, which comes right before Thanksgiving.
It's not uncommon for media conglomerates to bury this kind of news around the holiday period, so there's less awareness of it and, in turn, less pushback from their fans.
But all three shows had devoted audiences who would have probably followed them wherever they went.

In the second act of Hell’s Kitchen, Alicia Keys’s autobiographical passion project over a decade in the making, absent father Davis (Brandon Victor Dixon) sits down at a piano and asks his wary teenage daughter, Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), if she remembers the song he wrote for her that they always used to sing together. He starts to play, and the song is “If I Ain’t Got You,” the second single from Keys’s second studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys.
Ali tentatively joins him, the electricity of Keys’s surging melody and yearning lyrics coursing across the stage and supercharging the father and daughter’s fractured relationship. As staged by Michael Greif, it’s a lovely picture, with Davis at the piano far back and Ali at the edge of the stage looking away from him and toward the audience. Sparks fly, briefly, but despite...

Madi Diaz has teamed up with Kacey Musgraves for a new single titled “Don’t Do Me Good,” which is out now. Along with the release, Diaz has also unveiled details for a 2024 headlining tour.
“Don’t Do Me Good” is the second single from Diaz’s forthcoming album, Weird Faith, due on February 9th via Anti-. Musically, it is fairly sparse, with a piano and an airy drum kit carrying most of the arrangement. Overtop, however, Diaz’s and Musgraves’ voices come together to create a crisp, smooth blend of melodic harmony.
Tonally, Diaz wanted the song to “feel like calling your friend” to commiserate, and having “that person say ‘Yeah, I’ve been there,’ and share that experience with you.” Lyrically, she was inspired by the dynamic of a struggling relationship. “This song is about that person that we keep coming back to,” she said. “No matter...

Specifically, it means a very pointed combination of gross-out comedy and emotional sentiment — films that are more than happy to dabble in literal excrement and ask you honestly shed a little tear over the characters embarking on some kind of emotional journey. The headlines and the buzz are always about the nastiest gags and grossest moments (she puts what in her hair?), but audiences often who showed up hoping to be appalled often found themselves lulled into something weirdly gentle and sweet. Sometimes, the combination doesn't work at all and the result is an unpleasant, tonal disaster. But when it does work? Fourth graders at a K-12 charter school in Miami Springs got an upsetting Halloween surprise when their teacher screened the horror movie “Winnie the Pooh: Honey and Blood,” reports CBS News Miami. Despite the title of the film including “Winnie the Pooh,” the movie is not suitable for children as it follows Winnie and Piglet on a blood-thirsty rampage after Christopher Robin abandons them for college. Despite his extroversion and how, through his Call of Duty expertise, he’d fallen in with well-known streamers like Nickmercs and TimTheTatman, he never considered going live himself. As far as he was concerned, he already had a career as a licensed physical therapist and just played CoD on the side.

The DC Universe is about to have a brand new superhero in the form of "Blue Beetle." The latest DC Comics adaptation has been a long time coming, with the film originally produced for HBO Max before Warner Bros. decided to give it a theatrical release. "Blue Beetle" represents the first time this character has appeared in a live-action movie, and the film is also giving a Latino superhero the spotlight, which is a big deal. But did director Angel Manuel Soto manage to make a satisfying film?
Critics and fans have seen DC's latest, which features "Cobra Kai" star Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. It's been an admittedly rough year for WB and DC, with both "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" and "The Flash" bombing in a big way. Is this movie poised to break the bad streak? Based on the early word from those who have seen the film,...

For many playwrights, film and television work has historically served as a supplement to their income from the theater world. But in recent years, writers say, studios have begun to poke holes in that safety net, leaving some stage scribes as frustrated and angry as their screenwriting colleagues.
“TV really seemed like a way to have more stability, to be able to just have a middle-class life doing the thing I love, get health insurance, support my family,” 72 miles to go … playwright Hilary Bettis said Wednesday outside Netflix’s Union Square offices in New York. “And now it feels like the rug is being pulled out from under us.”

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka headlines Totally Killer, a time-traveling horror comedy from Prime Video and Blumhouse Television. The first batch of photos confirms that ’80s hairstyles aren’t the only horrifying thing Shipka will encounter as she travels back in time.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Shipka said she’s happy to be back in the horror genre – a genre she really loves. Shipka also offered a description of her character.
“Jamie is a very modern teen girl – she’s flawed, spends too much time on her phone, and is not yet thinking about the bigger picture of her life,” stated Kiernan. “All of the sudden, she’s forced to grow up very quickly to take control of her situation and, through this awakening, discovers how brave she is.”

Prime Video has announced that they will begin streaming their latest Blumhouse collaboration, the time travel slasher comedy Totally Killer, on October 6th – and while there isn’t a trailer available for the film just yet, they have unveiled a batch of first look images, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article!
Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) directed Totally Killer from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo, based on an original script by David Matalon (The Clearing) and Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried). The story follows Jamie (Shipka) whose mom, Pam, is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia, Jamie travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.

“Essential Truths of the Lake” is the last thing most people would expect from Lav Diaz: a direct follow-up to his previous film, “When the Waves Are Gone.” It’s not a sequel, per se (this one actually comes earlier), but they are connected, with a third movie featuring the same disillusioned police detective in the works.
The Filipino filmmaker, whose pokey social critiques run anywhere from three to 11 hours, established the character of Lt. Hermes Papauran (John Lloyd Cruz) in “Waves.” Described there as “arguably the greatest Filipino investigator ever,” he’s Diaz’s version of “The Singing Detective”: a tortured enforcer afflicted with a skin condition that reflects on the surface the conflict and cynicism roiling within him. He’s a good cop in a corrupt country, furious with how Rodrigo Duterte mishandled the war on drugs.
It’s a basic rule of dramaturgy that it...
