This week on “American Idol,” five singers — Layla Spring, Dominique, Brandon Diaz, Kay Kay and Trevor McBane — were eliminated just prior to making the Season 16 live shows. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan made the tough decisions after seeing them all perform as solo singers and in duets with professional artists. Hours after the elimination episode aired on ABC, Perry Tweeted this emotional message to the five home-bound singers:
“Just because your #americanidol journey has ended, please don’t let it discourage you. Keep singing, keep following your dreams! Trust and believe I heard no 1,786 times before I heard yes.”

Layla, Trevor and Brandon all retweeted Perry’s remarks, with Layla writing back, “Aww I love you so much @katyperry thank you for all of your kind words!

On the April 9 episode of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest revealed that only seven of the dozen singers were moving on to the live shows. This meant that five contestants in Group 1 of the Top 24 saw their dreams of winning season 16 end. Which of these artists do you think was wrongly eliminated and was most deserving of a place in the Top 14? Vote in our poll below and then sound off in the comments section.
In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining two dozen artists from the Top 50 had been split into two groups. Each of those Top 24 contestants had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. That trio of talent then determined if each contestant deserved a place in the Top 14.

On Monday night’s (April 9) “American Idol,” celebrity duets brought together hopefuls with their mentors — Andy Grammer, Bishop Briggs, Luis Fonsi, Pat Monahan, Aloe Blacc, Allen Stone and Sugarland, among them — and several of the contestants more than held their own.
“I don’t know how to critique anymore,” Katy Perry said just a half hour into the show. “Everybody is arriving and showing up.” Except, of course, for the five singers who would be leaving the competition.
The show started with a bang as Catie Turner teamed up with Grammer, gushing “Omg, you could be my uncle or something!” There’s something quite endearing about how Turner doesn’t give a damn, even after Grammer warned her about nerves. Their duet of “Good to be Alive (Hallelujah)” was exuberant and fun, earning praise from judge Lionel Richie, who told her, “You killed it.”
Up next was long-haired beauty Cade Foehner,...

Monday’s American Idol paired the first wave of Season 16’s Top 24 with some of the biggest names in music — before thinning the herd with five dream-crushing eliminations.
Before we break down all 12 of tonight’s duets, here are the five singers booted from the competition this evening:
* Trevor McBane
* Layla Spring
* Dominique
* Brandon Diaz
* Kay Kay
That means Cade Foehner, Michelle Sussett, Dennis Lorenzo, Gabby Barrett, Jonny Brenns, Michael J. Woodard and Catie Turner (phew!) are moving forward. Honestly, I have no complaints with these results. Like, I wish I had more to say, but I genuinely believe the best collection of humans remain.

Sunday night during the first Top 24 performance episode of “American Idol,” 21-year-old Cade Foehner sang Jimi Hendrix‘s “All Along The Watchtower” for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. This Shelbyville, Texas rocker comes from a small town with only one stoplight, so he’s truly a fish out of water in Hollywood, CA. Was Cade’s performance good enough to send him through to the Season 16 live shows, which begin April 22 on ABC? Watch the “American Idol” performance video above and then read the judges’ comments below.

“American Idol” may be on a new network (ABC) but has the same host (Ryan Seacrest) and is following the same format that worked so well for 15 seasons on Fox. After five episodes devoted to the auditions, the show shifted to Hollywood where 169 hopefuls had to sing once again for the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
The first of the Hollywood week episodes, in which the contestants sang in groups of 10 and solo, aired on March 26 and April 1. Only 50 of these contestants were given the chance to be showcased in solo performances that determined the top 24. Those Top 50 took to the stage at the Exchange club in downtown Los Angeles on Feb. 8.
The episode featuring these performances will air on April 2. If you can’t wait for the results, scroll down to see the roster of 26 men who performed, the songs they sung and their eventual...
