“Archive 81” will not receive a second season on Netflix, TheWrap has learned.
The series, from creator Rebecca Sonnenshine, starred Mamoudou Athie as video archivist Dan Turner, who was restoring tapes in the present, originally shot by Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) in 1994 at the mysterious Visser apartment building.
In different timelines, both Dan and Melody uncover disturbing secrets about a destructive, demon-worshipping cult.
The series, which costarred Martin Donovan, Evan Jonigkeit, Julia Chan, Ariana Neal and Matt McGorry, was loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name.
Sonnenshine created the series and served as showrunner and executive producer. James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster also executive produced with Rebecca Thomas, Antoine Douaihy and Paul Harris Boardman.
The series, which debuted in January, ended on a cliffhanger that left Dan’s fate up in the air.

“The Witcher,” “Stay Close,” “Cobra Kai,” “Emily in Paris,” and “Manifest” all retained their dominion on Netflix’s English-language TV Top 10 list for the second full week of 2022, while the sixth season of makeover show “Queer Eye” fell through the cracks, leaving room for newcomers “Cheer” (Season 2) and “Archive 81” to join the ranks.
“Cheer” was No. 5 on the list with roughly 29.1 million hours viewed, and horror drama “Archive 81,” from showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine, landed in the seventh slot with 22.2 million hours viewed. The suspenseful series stars Dina Shihabi, Mamoudou Athie, Matt McGorry, Ariana Neal, Julia Chan, Evan Jonigkeit and Martin Donavan, and involves a deadly mystery involving a cult, arson and a disappeared director. “Stay Close,” the limited thriller series based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same name, climbed to the No. 1 spot with 53.72 million hours viewed.

When it comes to living in New York City, few things are as scary as real estate. But in Netflix’s “Archive 81,” premiering January 14 on the streamer, it’s not the rent or the rodents that terrify. It’s “pioneers of the imagination,” according to the trailer.
At least, that’s the impression given in the series’ first trailer. Based on the three-season podcast of the same name, the upcoming horror thriller finds a video archivist Dan (Mamoudou Athie) attempting to restore VHS tapes damaged in a fire. And as everyone from “The Ring” to “V/H/S/” knows, there’s nothing more frightening than what lies on analog.
Sure enough, Dan is able to restore some tapes just enough to become enmeshed in documentarian Melody’s 1994 exploration of a NYC apartment building, where some very strange things are happening, including mask-wearing, modern dance, and some very scary tenant meetings. Not...

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming horror series “Archive 81,” which draws upon nostalgia for the videotape era of the 1990s to weave a chilling tale that plays out across dual timelines.
Loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name, “Archive 81” begins in present day with a character named Dan (Mamoudou Athie) being hired by a shadowy organization to restore video tapes that were damaged in a fire 25 years ago. As Dan restores the tapes in a remote location (“for his security” he’s assured), he witnesses the story of a woman named Melody (Dina Shihabi) who begins videotaping residents of an odd apartment building to create an oral history, only to discover something incredibly strange about the building and its inhabitants.

It’s team-up time for twin titans of comedy once again . Actually one of the stars of this new film was attempting this just a couple of months ago. The in-danger-of-over-saturation star Kevin Hart made an attempt to broaden his fan base by joining up with another rising comic star, Josh Gad, In the modest hit (couldn’t have cost that much) The Wedding Ringer. Well it certainly worked for Kevin’s comic predecessors Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and Chris Tucker. But this time out he’s truly going for it, making a run for the comedy big leagues, by teaming with an established superstar of laugh-filled flicks, Will Ferrell (sure he’s had some duds, but when he scores, he scores big). And this new film takes some hot-button current topics, and gives them a spin that may remind you of certain Pryor and Murphy classics. So, let’s...

I'm on the set of "Get Hard," and Kevin Hart is cracking himself up. Some context is in order. Hart, Will Ferrell, actress Edwina Finley (as Hart's wife) and Ariana Neal (as Hart's young daughter) are sitting around a table on a New Orleans soundstage. It's a dinner scene. Ferrell's character James, a business executive wrongfully convicted of tax evasion, has hired Hart's character Darnell to prep him for prison under the assumption that the car wash owner has served time. There's just one problem: Darnell hasn't been behind bars a day in his life. In this scene, he's forced to concoct a story about his criminal past after James puts him on the spot during dinner. And by "concoct," I mean "pass off a scene from the movie 'Boyz N the Hood' as an episode from his own life." "Rickaaaaay! Rickaaaaay!" Hart screams near the tail end of his monologue.

You may recall back in 2009 the news story about a young 22 year old man named Oscar Grant who was shot by a police officer in a train station in an out-of-control situation that was actually caught on camera by on-lookers on their cell phones. These videos were shown by numerous news stations and made their way across the internet.
The story is a sad one, a tragic one, and one that it is impossible to watch unfold without becoming emotional and feeling angry, yet this film is important and director, Ryan Coogler, does a commendable job, especially when one takes into consideration that this is Coogler’s first feature film. We follow the final day in the life of Oscar, played with conviction by star-in-the-making Michael B.

Ryan Coogler's dramatisation of Fruitvale Station resident Oscar Grant's shooting by a San Francisco Bart (Bay Area Rapid Transport) policeman is making a welcome appearance in the UK. Taking numerous awards over the past year, at Sundance and Cannes amongst others, the film has been a calling card for its young director.Fruitvale Station tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old Oakland, CA resident over the course of December 31, 2008 as he works on being a better son to his mother (Octavia Spencer), being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz) and being a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal), their beautiful four year-old daughter. Before we’ve even had the chance to settle into our seats, Ryan Coogler’s harrowingly humane drama Fruitvale Station begins with the real life footage that this entire picture is based upon. It’s the early hours of the first day in 2009, and a 22-year-old man is tragically, shot dead by a police officer. What then transpires is a flashback into the final day in the life of Oscar Grant, intensely building towards his inevitable fate.

Settling in for Fruitvale Station, I already knew where Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan)’s story was headed. Grant’s final moments, in the first hours of 2009, facedown on cold pavement with a bullet from the gun of a Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) officer lodged in his back, have been immortalized through the media. The shooting sparked protests across the city of Oakland and made headlines worldwide.
What I never could have expected was how Ryan Coogler’s utterly devastating dramatization of the incident, and of the quiet, normal days leading up to it, would pull me into Oscar’s life and force me to see the world through his eyes in a way I never would have believed possible. That’s the brilliance of Fruitvale Station - it’s a brutal and heartbreaking documentation of a national tragedy, to be sure, but it’s also an involving work...

For many of us the reason we travel to the movie theater is for a few hours of escapist entertainment. Movies can be a place where we can discharge from the trials and tribulations of reality for a few short hours. Entertaining the masses is a motive that is certainly worth achieving, but there are times when films attempt a higher purpose. That is certainty the case with Fruitvale Station, which recounts the tragic true life tale of Oscar Grant III. Considering the boiling racial temperament that has gripped this nation with recent events, like the controversial George Zimmerman trial, it is a movie like Fruitvale Station that can provide an insight that no by-the-book news story ever could. For many of us the reason we travel to the movie theater is for a few hours of escapist entertainment. Movies can be a place where we can discharge from the trials and tribulations of reality for a few short hours. Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, director Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station follows the true story of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air.
Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother (Octavia Spencer), whose birthday falls on New Year’s Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), who he hasn’t been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal), their beautiful four year-old daughter.

Michael B. Jordan has received deserved praise for his incredible lead performance in "Fruitvale Station," but it's Melonie Diaz who stands as the film's breakout star.
The 29-year-old New York native, best known for supporting roles in "Be Kind Rewind" and "Raising Victor Vargas," plays Jordan's onscreen girlfriend in the new film, and does a job worthy of the actress's current professional heroes: Michelle Williams, Marion Cotillard and Jessica Chastain. ("I think they all make great choices," Diaz said about the trio of Oscar-caliber stars.)
"Fruitvale Station" won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. The film, from first-time writer-director Ryan Coogler, tells the story of Oscar Grant, a Bay Area resident who was shot and killed by a Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) police officer on New Year's Day in 2009. Diaz stars as Grant's loving girlfriend, a no-nonsense woman who possesses a fierce...

December 31, 2008, was a momentous day for San Francisco Bay Area resident Oscar Grant, and now — with its edgy, overpowering dramatization in Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station — for American cinema. Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, a 22-year-old African-American ex-con and former drug dealer with a girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) who loves him despite one brief infidelity; a 4-year-old daughter named Tatiana (Ariana Neal); and no job. He was late for work at a supermarket one too many times. Now his back is against the wall.Jordan gives a major performance. His Oscar is not a wholly admirable man. His motor runs fast; he acts before he thinks; he’s quick to get riled up. But he’s trying to grow up. He reaches out to strangers. He’s a dutiful son to an attentive (but easily fed up) mother (Octavia Spencer). He wins you over in an early scene: While driving, he...

Ryan Coogler's directorial debut, Fruitvale Station, is the first truly great film I've seen at this year's Cannes Film Festival. This is a story told with such honesty, heart and emotion it's an exhaustive experience trying to make it to the end without breaking down and it's all thanks to a spectacularly lean screenplay, tight direction and performances that will knock you over. On New Year's Day in 2009, Oscar Grant was shot in the back by arresting officers at Fruitvale Station as he was riding the Bart home from a night out with friends in San Francisco. Fruitvale opens with actual footage from one of the cell phones that caught the incident in its entirety and sets a mood from the get go that you simply cannot shake. Based on a true story, Fruitvale Station recounts the 24 hours that led to that incident. Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) plays Oscar,...

"Fruitvale Station" is more than the dramatization of an obituary. It's about empathy.
In recounting (and slightly fictionalizing) the final day of 22-year-old Oscar Grant's life, first-time writer-director Ryan Coogler has made a film that piles small daily gestures – and one final, heartbreakingly tragic one – into an inspiring reminder about basic human decency.
That may sound trite, but "Fruitvale Station" – already a hit on the festival circuit – resonates not just for its portrait of injustice, but because its argument for treating strangers kindly, decently, comes at a time when fear and presumption often trump simple kindness, and the public sphere is navigated in cellphone bubbles.
In a star-making performance, Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, the San Francisco Bay Area ex-convict and former drug dealer who, famously, was fatally shot by a transit police officer early on New Year's morning, 2009. The moment is glimpsed in raw cellphone footage at the start of "Fruitvale Station,...

Anant Singh, Yuen Wo Ping, Harvey Weinstein, Rooney Mara, (unknown), Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz, Michael B. Jordan, Naomie Harris and Ryan Coogler at the Majestic Hotel This evening I attended the Weinstein Co.'s Cannes presentation in which they revealed information, footage and trailers from all of their upcoming 2013 releases, both domestically and abroad. For the most part what was shown has already been seen such as trailers for The Butler, August: Osage County, The Grandmaster and Fruitvale Station plus a clip from Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, all of which I have included below in this recap of events, which did also feature some new footage from a selection of films. Weinstein himself seemed most proud of the upcoming, Shane Salerno-directed portrait of J.D. Salinger, which is aptly titled Salinger and 2013 Cannes jury member Nicole Kidman was on hand to offer a few words on Grace of Monaco,...

★★★★★ Based on the real-life 2009 shooting of Oscar Grant in Oakland, California, Ryan Coogler's feature debut Fruitvale Station (2013) is an uncompromising, original and movingly humane piece of American political cinema. Michael B. Jordan plays Oscar, who, on New Year's Eve, has already committed himself to fulfilling his annual resolutions a day in advance. Oscar is going to quit dealing drugs, be more faithful to girlfriend and mother of his child Sophina (Melonie Diaz), be a better father to his daughter, be a kinder son to his doting mother, Wanda (Octavia Spencer), and is going to take his girl out to see the Bay Area fireworks.
This day-in-the-life tale thus follows Oscar as he performs his various chores; picking up crabs for his grandma's gumbo, dropping his girlfriend at work and his daughter, Tatiana (Ariana Neal), at preschool. But not all is well in Oscar's world. His sister needs a loan on the rent,...

Dramatizing the last hours of 22 year old Oscar Grant before he was slain by a police officer in 2009, first time writer/director Ryan Coogler delivers a stirring and sympathetic tribute to his life. Actual cell phone footage of the killing in an Oakland, California rail station named Fruitvale was posted by witnesses to YouTube and is utilized at the beginning of the film to drive home the grim reality of this senseless death. With these harrowing images in mind, the movie rewinds back to the start of his final day. The coming catastrophe looms over every step we see Oscar take, amplifying the meaning behind the smallest of meetings and glances. Illuminating the worth of an unemployed ex-convict who also happened to be a loving father and son, Fruitvale is a moving and important reevaluation of someone usually written off by society.
