Eyebrows were raised and much dismissive discourse took place on social media when it was revealed that current Hollywood favourite, Timothée Chalamet, would be donning the famous top hat and purple coat to play a young Willy Wonka in an new adaptation of the much loved Roald Dahll adventure.
Written by the dream team that brought us Paddington in 2014 and the absolutely delightful Paddington 2 in 2017, Wonka serves as a prequel to Mel Stuart’s 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory which starred Gene Wilder as the iconic chocolatier.
Young Willy Wonka dreams of opening his own chocolate shop to perfect an art handed to him by his late mother (Sally Hawkins). Newly arrived in town with a head full of dream and a top hat overloading with magical marvel, Willy is set upon by a number of duplicitous individuals who would rather not share their wealthy customers with him.

As the first full week of December arrives, the customary end-of-year expressions of “Where did the time go?” come with it. This year has been highly consequential in the future of TV, as cord-cutters will outnumber pay-tv subscribers for the first time, and new deals for Hollywood’s top writers’ and actors’ unions will keep new TV episodes and movies coming for the next three years at least.
The approach of the holidays can lead to some manic weekdays, filled with meal planning, relatives who want attention and of course, gift shopping. Luckily, there are some fantastic new shows and movies heading to streaming this week to help take your mind off the holiday madness!

The filmmaking trio known as Rkss has previously brought us the films Turbo Kid and Summer of 84. Their latest is the slasher Wake Up, which had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas yesterday – and we not only have some reactions to the film that came out of that screening, we also have a clip from the film, courtesy of Deadline! You can watch the clip in the embed at the bottom of this article.
Written by Alberto Marini and based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, Wake Up centers on a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists who find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.
The furniture store setting reminds me of an ’80s slasher that deserves to be more popular, Hide and Go Shriek.

Scott Haze in The Seeding
A film set mostly in a single location which is vast in its ambition and existential scope, The Seeding screened at Tribeca earlier this year and is now part of the Frightfest line-up. Back in June I spoke with star Scott Haze, who plays the hapless hiker led astray by a mysterious child who finds himself trapped in a crater in the desert. Shortly afterwards I also met director Barnaby Clay. We spoke about the development of the story, its stunning location, the challenges of the shoot and the tricks which he used to bring depth to his supporting characters.
Barnaby, who trained in London, is pleased to hear that I’m in Paisley, which I identify by way of its famous abbey which features a gargoyle in the style of one of Hr Giger’s aliens. He tells me that back in his film school days he.

After a Florida Republican compared transgender people to mutants this week, CBS late night host Stephen Colbert took some time on Tuesday night to tear apart the representative’s entire logic, before dubbing him a mutant with “dumbass” abilities.
On Monday, in a hearing about a bill that would criminalize using a bathroom that doesn’t match someone’s birth-assigned gender, Rep. Webster Barnaby “offered a confusing metaphor” — as Colbert put it — for the existence of trans people in this country.
“I’m looking at society today and it’s like I’m watching an ‘X-Men’ movie,” Barnaby said. He added, “It’s like we have mutants living among us on planet Earth.”

As he continued speaking, Barnaby largely stayed calm — at least until the end of his statement.

After two years with Melbourne comedy podcast network Sanspants Radio and after doing pilots at Southern Cross Austereo in 2020 as well as being a 2Ser radio segment in 2021, cult news comedy podcast News Fighters will join Dan Ilic’s A Rational Fear podcast feed as a monthly show starting in 2023.
“With the Queen dead, Scott Morrison gone and Barnaby on the backbench, there's just not enough dumb material to do a weekly show anymore” said News Fighters host/producer Dylan Behan. “Doing the show monthly be much more sustainable - and Dan’s all about sustainability!”
Added A Rational Fear creator/host Dan Ilic:
“Dylan Behan has a brutally satirical eye, and that eye is forced to watch a lot of news… which is why it’s also very swollen, and red. Rather than see a doctor, part TV editor, part cyclops, Dylan Behan, is bringing News Fighters to the A Rational Fear feed.

The new anime TV series "Tiger and Bunny 2", directed by Mitsuko Kase, streams October 7, 2022 on Netflix:
"...in the city of 'Sternbild', superheroes aren't just heroes, they're corporate-sponsored reality stars. Following the success of the partnertship between 'Kotetsu' and 'Barnaby', 'Hero TV' has implemented the 'buddy system', where every hero works as part of a duo.
"Some of the pairs are more harmonious than others, but there's bound to be growing pains after the heroes are used to competing solo. But they better get their acts together soon, because a pair of villains are on their way to Sternbild…
