Beach House put together a pretty stellar setlist for their stripped-down show at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia Monday night (December 11th), including some live debuts and a few rarities they haven’t performed in over a decade.
After a surprise opening set from Philly’s own Kurt Vile, Beach House’s Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally did an intimate gig full of songs for the real heads. They performed “Many Nights” and “The Bells” — both from 2022’s Once Twice Melody: Chapter 3 — live for the very first time, and debuted “Devil’s Pool” from last April’s Become EP.
But the real surprises were the throwback rarities, including “Childhood” from their self-titled debut, which they hadn’t played in a whopping 16 years. They also did “Auburn and Ivory,” another Beach House deep cut, for the first time since 2012. And, for the first time since 2016, they performed Devotion’s “D.A.R.L.I.N.G.” and...

Kurt Vile has announced a new EP called Back to Moon Beach, out November 17th via Verve. Along with its lead single “Another good year for the roses,” the singer-songwriter has also mapped out a run of North American tour dates for 2024.
Though Back to Moon Beach is an EP by name, it would be a proper LP for most other artists, clocking in at nearly an hour long and nine tracks. In a press release, Vile himself says it’s more like a “Kv comp,” adding: “The first 6 tracks — which are the ones that fit on a single LP — are new to the world, with one foot in the not-too-distant past and the other with one tiny toe pointing toward the future. Together my feet are like a couple spanning time together.”

Kurt Vile, whose prolix verbosity and augmented guitar solos do not lend themselves to brevity (much like this sentence so far), will release a record this fall, on Nov. 17 to be exact, that he has titled Back to Moon Beach, which he heralds today with a new song called “Another Good Year for the Roses” (yes, this sentence is continuing), since it’s one part of an hour-long compendium of tunes he cheekily calls an “E.P.,” or “extended play” (not to be confused with a long-player, much like this...

Kurt Vile is officially an Angel. The indie rocker has shared his cover of Charli Xcx’s “Constant Repeat” for Amazon Originals, in celebration of the latter’s new Ivors Visionary Award.
Vile can remember the exact date he became a Charli fan: The same day he released his most recent album, April 2022’s (watch my moves). “I played an in-store at Rough Trade East London and her poster covered the entire front door,” he wrote in a statement. “I flew home the next morning listening to my newly acquired Crash CD over and over again”

Kurt Vile has posted a lengthy, heartfelt tribute to the late Rob Laakso, who was a longtime member of Vile’s backing band The Violators as well as shoegaze group the Swirlies. In an Instagram post, Vile praised Laakso as a “musical genius” and credited the multi-instrumentalist for a “shift to epic proportions” after he joined the Violators full-time with 2013’s Wakin on a Pretty Daze.
“This one’s been hard to get out of the fog in my brain and into words for a long time now,” Vile wrote. “Tributes are never easy but this one is just too close to the bone I guess. Thank you to everyone who reached out. It’s been beautiful seeing all the nice things written about Rob, because yeah he was quiet but there was so much to

End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.

The new Kurt Vile album begins, like many great yarns, in medias res. The poet-king of Philadelphia is at an airport somewhere in North America, pondering the prospects of his own mortality and a cold beer, when an epiphany hits him: “Listenin’ to ‘Heart of Gold’/Gonna open up for Neil Young,” he muses over a simple piano figure. “Man, life can sure be fun.” A horn section adds a stately fanfare for the common dude; Vile sings along for a few wordless bars, then calls it a day on the first-thought,...

While promoting his new solo album Serpentine Prison, Matt Berninger performed a rowdy cover of the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for the Man” as part of his Tonight Show set. Now Berninger has released a studio version of the track, to appear on an upcoming Velvets covers compilation, I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground & Nico.
Just like his Tonight Show version, Berninger takes a more far-out approach to Lou Reed’s frenetic depiction of a heroin addict. Instead of banging piano keys, we get steady,...

Kurt Vile first covered the Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run” when he was 18 at a show in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania — complete with “take a drag or two” subbed out for the local crowd-pleasing “Landsdowne Avenue.” He then performed it with the Velvets’ John Cale in 2017 in honor of the 50th anniversary of The Velvet Underground & Nico. Now, he’s contributing a new take — with his band the Violators — to I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico, out September 24th via Vile’s new label Verve Records.

The statistics of Bandcamp Friday speak for themselves: In the year-plus since the launch of the campaign, during which the platform has waived its revenue share for music purchased on the first Friday of each month, fans have paid artists more than $50 million dollars. “Bandcamp is like my life source,” metal auteur Trevor William Church told Rolling Stone in 2019, no doubt speaking for many creators in the age of meager streaming royalties. Ahead of the release of Dinosaur Jr.’s latest LP Sweep It Into Space this Friday, the indie rock legends have released the video for the album’s “Take It Back.”
The colorful visual features Claymation and stop-motion animation directed by Callum Scott-Dyson, who said in a statement that the video was inspired by the painted creature featured on Sweep It Into Space’s album cover.
That artwork served as a “springboard for its own little adventure, exploring some simple notions of creation, dependence, coming of age, and searching for another like yourself.

Kurt Vile was sitting in the Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville last December when he floated a pipe-dream idea to producer Dave Ferguson. Vile was slated to perform at the Grand Ole Opry with his hero John Prine two nights later and asked if Ferguson would call the songwriting legend and ask if he felt like dropping by the studio.
“Ferg was like, ‘What are you doing, Prine?’” Vile recalls. “Prine was like, ‘I’m watching the game!’”

There’s a moment during Thursday’s superb tribute to John Prine in which Bill Murray holds up a framed photo of himself singing with Prine and the bluegrass band the SteelDrivers onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. “This is about as jazzed-up as I ever got,” he says, the joy tied to the memory apparent on his face. But when Murray, who’s wearing a pink floral shirt and sombrero, glances down at the photograph, he turns sad, suddenly aware that such magical, only-in-Prine’s-presence moments are now gone.
